Why dont games live up to their hype?

Friendly discussion

I certainly hope not, i have been following the release of this game for i think 2 years now i guess only time will tell and yes @staff_julie was amazing, i missed the transfer sent her a heartfelt letter and she worked with me and got me in on the second wave actually communicated with me through multiple messages was incredibly nice support on IMC’s front

This guy gets it, this is the target audience for this game

That feeling of 10 hours grinding for my virtov plate pants and finally making them

Why is Julie quitting?
I still enjoy the game a lot, tho I wish for some 10 people raiding content soon I haven’t even reach the current cap so can’t complain about not having anything to do… plus the alts I dream to make

Because ideas sell better and are cheaper to produce than actual, finished games.
Rereleases and early access is where most of the money a mmo will ever produce is made.
Casual players usually only play a mmo for the first few months, so marketing uses that, to get to their money asap before they leave the hype-train.

As a producer you only need to invest massive time till after the release when the hype for a title dies down, and the media already has written their reviews.
Then you use your resources for the next prerelease title. Why would a publisher nowadays finish a game 100% if he could make more money (pre-)releasing two 75% finished, bugged titles as limited extra-premium edition for $300 per founderpack with the same resources?

People buy that sh1t, and that’s why the entire mmo-(and gaming)genre is so rotten:
Quality doesn’t pay. Hype does.
And people in the meantime actually expect getting screwed over with high-ping, bug- and bot-infested closed-betas, which are disguised and sold as the prerelease of a finished title.

If people would suddenly stop paying for early access-traps, and only pay for finished titles and quality, instead of spending a lot of money to get a silly ingame-advantage over others, you can be sure that we would have much better games today, because the money would fall into the right hands.

But we all know that will never happen, because for every person who does that, there will be 20 idiots who buy the $300 version because it is ‘limited’ and comes with a 30 cent plastic figure.

Also worth noting here that the FF franise has a company with bigger budget behind them than ToS. They can afford bigger development and QA teams.

Blame the hype not the game.

It would be much better to be skeptical about the game pre-release and get positively impressed post-release, than to be impressed by all the advertisements and promises only to find product of mediocre quality that fails to deliver what was promised.

This should be the game. Grinding, defeating tough bosses, and socializing. That’s the problem, it’s not really living up to that.

A world boss shows up, and it’s just a punching bag that tickles people and waits to die. They’re no challenge at all, just a HP sponge. The challenge is in finding ways to optimize around lag ( oh you made a QS3 archer3? Sorry you can’t auto attack that fast with 4 FPS, better roll a fletcher3 so you can place down an AoE that does passive damage while you lag ), and find something that does passive DPS so you can get a reward from everyone piling on the weak boss. There’s no role for tanks to play at all, and supports are barely relevant - the boss is so easy it’s just all about optimizing quick DPS with no strategy.

The social part of the game is really disappointing as well. I had hoped for a real social game, like how the game was in icbt 1/2. Nobody sits and talks in towns, and people rarely talk in groups ( except to complain about how they queue’d up with a bad group ). The game is mostly a solo run through quests and solo queue for dungeons / missions. The community mainly lies outside of the actual game, in various discords and forum groups. I feel like I’m pulling teeth just to get someone to stop doing their daily tasks and talk for a bit.

What you’re saying is what the game should be, and that’s what would be fun. The problem is that it’s not.

What level are you?

I roll a pretty HIGH Dps class, with a really nice team of players and bosses shred us with even the slightest mistake

Mobs hitting me, for 2-5k damage, late levels are pretty brutal and unforgiving
And i have good gear, with the knowledge of how to lesser these damages uneducated players will be getting 1shot easily

Bosses 1HkOing our tanks, shredding entire groups with AoE, idk what game you are playing mate
Tanks are incredibly important for grinding and bosses i would like to see you get an efficient exp/hr without a swordie with atleast pelt 1 in workshop

Without a support, enjoy sitting by a campfire every pull with woeful, and cost inefficient grinding/ goodluck facetanking any damage from a boss enjoy walking back 4 maps to your grind spot, like what game are you playing mate seriously your uneducated, inexperienced observations are infuriating because you have no idea what you are talking about

World bosses are only a tiny portion of content, yes they need work but all of these classes are indeed relevant, the only reason world bosses don’t pose much of a challenge is because of the level scaling, they have a static level if they tweaked the stats of world bosses and made it so they were far beyond that of the zone of the level it would be ok

By the look of your post you have not even broken level 200 yet

Somehow you extrapolated the things I said about world bosses to late game grinding. I guess I shouldn’t expect anything less from you at this point though. I realize you only joined the forums recently but no I’m not someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about lol. I’m not going to swordfight e-peens with you either.

I’m talking about world bosses that everyone is doing, and no you don’t need a tank to fight Ellaganos, Fire Lord, Dullahan, Marionette, Necroventer, Cerberus, Archon, Templeshooter, Canceril, etc. None of these are one shotting your tank, or shredding entire groups. If a tank does show up to these bosses it’s a joke, they’re just there to leech a box.

Also again you’re replying to me when I was talking to someone else. I thought you were here to decry the vocal minority, not be it by being the one-man posting every other post.

It’s IMC

After that the game started to become bad. Except for the endlesstower.

(My Opinion anyway) and i never played wow so cant say about that.

Nothing lives up to the hype, that’s why it’s hype.

ToS is just another MMO that was released way too early, like every single MMO, ever made, in history.

I can hype about a chocolate bar being the most delicious thing I’ll ever have in my entire life, but after I taste it, I could be disapointed , thats the chocolate factory’s fault? No, cuz chocolate isn’t the most delicious thing ever, not even close, but its my fault to build such a hype cause I wanted it so much… even if they labeled it “Most delicious thing ever”

FFXIV Online or FFXIV:ARR?

FFXIV Online was the worst MMO in the world. They had to give up and do a new one.
FFXIV:ARR can be seen by “Final Fantasy MMO 2”, so it’s not like you can point that game.

PS.: I’m not saying that TOS is free from problems. I just want that guys bring REAL releases free from bugs.

we humans, expect everything from day1.

Most games are unfinished and rely on in-game transactions for further development.

How to spot a millenial: the sentence.

I love them. They cute, they’re great, and the plant theme is right up my alley.

It’s a matter of taste. Maybe you’d be better of playing a different game?

The problem with that is

a) mmos need testing with a large audience (closed/open beta) to catch a lot of bug and balance issues. A normal QA team of 5-20 people just cqn’t find everything. Paying larger QA teams (100+) would not be economical and still not be as efficient as an open beta.

b) They do need to make money.
They have a certain budget (and that budget is never ejough) which they can use up for development, and if they reach the end of that budget and they can’t get more funding from sponsors, they -need- to bring the game online to start making money and release much needed patches after launch.
The only alternative would be to let the game die pre-release and leave the devs with huge debts.

Any month that’s stuck in testing and fixing is huge costs without any revenue. And the longer it’s stuck in development, the smaller the chances to actually make enough money post-launch to cover the development costs.

Yep. I definatly feel your pain. but i think its alot about your perception

but consider this:
Weren’t tv shows better when you where younger?
Movies better when you where younger?
Games where more fun?
hell, food even tasted better when you where younger.

you ever tried to watch an episode of Pokemon lately? ■■■■ is garbage, yet we loved it as kids

As we get older we hold on the memories we had during an experience, not necessarily the experience itself.

Not to take away from your points, which i agree with. i think you should try to think about ToS being an entire new experience, not something that will give you the same feelings you had before with other game. because those feelings are gone for good, ill be hard pressed if your gonna be able to relive them. =/

nostalgia brings the HYPE… and nostalgia is a cold hearted bitch.
