I am not sure how difficult of a request this is, but I think it would be really great if it was possible to customize the skin tone of our characters. On the international servers at least, I think you will definitely have players that would like their character’s skin color to match their real skin color and right now that isn’t possible in the game. I have heard a few players in the international beta express disappointment that they couldn’t make their character darker skinned.
Medieval Lithuania wasn’t exactly the most culturally diverse place on earth.
Then again it didn’t have sentient onion creatures either. Sure, more skin tones would be nice.

You can unlock more character customization through achievements. I think achievements are a good way to reward more weird and wonderful customization (rainbow hair? dark-elf skin maybe? beards?).
You’re right though, and I was just joking about the Lithuania thing, although that is is the intended setting. I’d rather not have another SUDDENLY LASER GUNS AND SPACESHIPS mmo (cough, TERA, FFXIV).
I mean, they mentioned in one of the interviews that skin tone was one of their first additional customization options they wanted to add.
Oh, I did not see that, that’s awesome to hear!

Q Can we change colors of the costumes in the game?
A) We are looking for the most optimized solution for this question. However, if we were to develop such feature, then we want to first change skin colors of the characters.

Right now I’m not even sure if the technology is in the game, since when you are waiting for a character to load only their head in invisible - everyone’s body is exactly the same. Like the skin is built into the class costume model. Hopefully that means it wont be a ton of work to change it.
I think you’re right, the skin/body is built in with the costume. I can’t remember which site it was, but it had a model viewer where you could see all of the models for the class costumes and it had the arms/legs attached to each costume. Skin tone seems like a customization option that should have been added in the first place when considering the character creation options.
From my experience in beta, it was kind of boring seeing everyone with the same skin color and adding both lighter/darker shades of skin would make characters more interesting and diverse. Something like skin color shouldn’t be rewarded as an achievement either, imo, whereas I can see something like pink hair being offered in a cash shop or as an achievement.
Just hope that skin color won’t be overlooked by IMC, I think this detail is significant for character customization. And apparently plenty others also think so just judging by multiple forum threads.
Repeating myself, but doing it to calm the masses. IMC has said in a QA that skin tone would be one of their priorities in terms of customization. Also, the options are already in the game files (there are 5 options as of right now).
Whaaat, there’s already 5 skin options confirmed to be in the game files right now?! Or do you mean 5 options (sliders?) total for character customization at creation?
I knew they had mentioned in QnA the potential skin tone but I had no idea that skin tone was currently in the files.
That’s nice to know. Very thoughtful of imcGames, even though I could have lived with just 1 skin tone.
If skin tone is in the game files, it’s either in the updated kbt files or I didn’t find them yet :<
Aw man ,_, Crossing my fingers that it’s there in kbt then! I’m just surprised there wasn’t more news of confirmed skin tone in the files since it seems like a lot of people hope for this customization option.
To my knowledge, the most we’ve gotten is the prospect of skin tone via an old QnA which has been copied/pasted all over the forum a hundred times over. Hope that Sourpuss can shed some light on their remark regarding skin tone in the files, wasn’t sure if they meant 5 sliders (one which includes skin) or 5 skin tone options in the files. ;v;
I can tell you what I saw in the files though xP
Each class has its own texture file with the colors already built in. It seems like they’d have to reconfigure the entire model to allow for costume/skin tones.
This one is for archer :s
unless they just provide one texture per skin tone per class… but that seems like a lot of work too xDD, even more if they plan to implement more textures per class…
Just as I thought, the costume and skin are together ; ;
This is complete speculation/rambling, and also shows how desperate I am for skin tone LOL: Depending on how their graphic artist designed their textures and going off of the assumption that there’s the original/master file with layers (PSD) for each class with organization, then it wouldn’t be difficult.
If anything, the task of adding new skin tones would only be a tedious one, but not challenging. This is following the assumption that a professional graphic artist would save a master PSD, or any other layered graphic format, for each class.
Visualizing this, their master PSD textures would have clothing on the top layers, the skin always on the underneath layers (this just makes sense; skin would never be on top of a clothing layer, even for a semi-transparent clothing element), in a folder group, or could easily be put into a group. They could apply an adjustment layer to lighten/darken the skintone to just those bottom skin layers and apply this to every class once they determine the skintones settings they want to use.
IDK this is how I’d approach it with my experience from creating textures but who knows…(And amg I can’t believe I typed all this hangs head in shame ;~;)
No worries, I love my customizations as much as the next xD
I think the only reason why they don’t have skin tones at the moment is because the head and different files. It may be tedious to create a variety of skin tones for each class, but the real headache might come from how they program it in.
-Edit-
Here are a few more game files, note that not all the pieces line up to the previous image x3
Rogue (Archer)
Darker skins are a must, what if you wish to interpret a dark elf ranger in your role playing ?
Thank you for providing a perspective that makes sense. It shouldn’t be that difficult for the art team to link different skin colors to the correct skin tones.
