Played RO for years, now waiting for ToS

As the subject says, played RO for years, saw this on an MMO site yesterday and had a rush of nostalgia.
Then I started looking into videos and reviews…
I’m saddened that I’m missing out on the second closed beta but at the same time, my friends and I are waiting to play the open beta now.

If there is a spare key out there though? I’d love to play.

A key won’t help you at this point. There’s only a week left of CBT.
You’ll probably be disappointed with ToS anyway; I know I was…

i agree with that …

The CBT is only 1 week left, so you should wait for the OBT.
The game is indeed what a RO player would want to play, it is very dynamic and holds a lot of potential in terms of gameplay, development and community.

I would’t say that it will disappoint you, when I first played I was confused a lot about the balance state and some design decisions, but after a while when I get used to it and understand how things go, play a few different classes,… I realized that it is actually very great, and even though it might look bad, what we are having here is an unfinished game in a CBT. The concept is great, the core gameplay is great, many other things like the main stories, side stories, little details on maps and monsters, many kinds of interaction …are great; so there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement and development.

We got massacred by Poring and Thief bugs in RO, no mp pots, not that many items early game, no quest indications, no maps, and we survived that and had fun. Now people simple complain and get pissed of everything.

Well to be honest my personal feelings on the game are that I want to play it as I’ve tried to play RO again and was greatly disappointed with it. So many things had been changed that it no longer felt like RO anymore, the late game classes take so long to get to that it no longer seems like a game friendly to new players. If anything I wanted to play ToS for even what little time remains to see if I could recommend this to friends that I would likely be playing with.
Now before someone mentions that ToS has a long time to reach high levels I get that. Really, I do, and I honestly do not mind as long as the in game economy hasn’t hit the point where if you don’t have a couple billion of the in game currency you cannot get a decent pair of shoes.

You should try out ToS after the official release. As of current state, you will only be disappointed.

Feel free to explain, because from everything I’ve seen I think this game is very much what I’m looking for. A throwback to nostalgia? Check. Better graphics but the same feel as RO? Check. Music that throws back to RO but has smoother more epic feel? Check. Grinding for hours on end without needing some contrived story? CHECK! Couple that with Skype and a group of friends with a similar mindset? And I can’t see how I would be disappointed.

Unless you can get me in the game, please, keep what you have to say about whether or not I’ll enjoy the game to points made about what’s wrong with the game that you’ve experienced and why you’re disappointed, then think about sending those thoughts to the feedback section.

So true, had to find your quests by talking to the NPC’s! Now any player is completely lost without a giant exclamation point over their heads symbolizing “I HAVE A QUEST!” Seriously? Go play Everquest and figure out how some of us think quests should be done. If you’re not willing to put in the work finding them? You don’t get them.
Boom.
Mind Blown~

The CBT is buggy. VERY buggy to the point that some people will just end up claiming the game is sht even though this is actually a CBT. Can’t really blame those guys though.

The grinding spot is very limited. You probably will better off to be solo most of the time (except the 141-175 grind).

the class is very imbalanced and you will probably get ksed if you are not a melee class.

There are so much linear quest in the game that you eventually either relied too much on the quest experience, or just got bored of it. Those quests are NOT optional.

This is definitely not the right time to feel how the game is like in the official release, I bet it will be completely different after many bugs and strange stuff is fixed.

Yeah if you have fun being a beta tester to find out the bug, sure, CBT is the right place for you.

Mostly because of the bugs, I don’t see any issue with the game play or balance at the moment (there are a few improvements needed, but nothing is severely broken right now)

But yeah, bugs, lots of bugs.

Neat! I don’t mind playing in beta mostly to see the potential a game has to offer, I played the original DFO beta when Nexon was still at the reins. That… that was a bug fest. In some maps you could be hit by an enemy through the gate to the starting room and wind up fighting the boss for the stage.

But what I really want to do is get a feel for how the game itself plays, how the controls respond, the kind of pc that people would need to play it and get a fulfilling experience, the resources it would utilize so that my friends without top tier gear could still join me. But if it is, as most people so far have said, disappointing, why are so many people still playing it?

Honestly it seems like most people are still playing it because, despite the bugs, they enjoy the game and see the potential that the game holds.
As far as class? I was planning on playing the Fencer class after running Swordsman c2, highlander c3, and then fencer, just for the skills that balance out to big burst damage with single enemy burst/multi hit overwhelm.

Yeah that’s why I said you should try out after the official release.

The game is poorly optimized now, with top tier gear you will still get a low fps. The mouse control is super buggy (keyboard control is fine imo).

As contrary to what you think, most beta testers had left the game, those who stayed are just the one who generally played more hours per day, because they can survive the level 80 grind wall without feeling boring (it’s really boring at that part as you don’t have much other stuff to do if you don’t want to grind through it).

I know that RO is a grind fest too, but at least you have more options when you grind, or are lazy to grind.

Fair enough. Don’t take my responses the wrong way, I do value the input, but I do want to play this beta regardless, even for the scant few days remaining.

I’m more than happy to wait for the OBT or even the official release, but really if the people who had the chance to play the beta gave up before the CBT finished without putting in the effort to get past the walls, I feel that they’re doing an injustice to the game as a whole. They got into the game to help the people making the game find out what the community wanted. If they found a section of the game that really walled them out and kept them from enjoying the game fully then it should have been noted, put in the feedback section, and given some thought by the people in charge, patched for the CBT and move on to adjusting the flow of the play through that level section before the OBT/release.

You seem to have stuck it out, so what keeps you coming back and logging in if it’s so disappointing?

Many had posted them in the feedback section, or tried to discuss about it in the shout channel, but shot down by the high level players claiming that “if you can’t grind, quit the game.”. What most of these higher level player don’t seems to notice is that, at higher level the grinding is more fun because you have alot of options compared to the first grinding gap at lv 80, and that gap only exist for those who don’t play for much per day.

I manage to clear that gap because I was trying to chase my friend’s level who were 30 above me. The game felt fun again after I reached 127, that’s why I didn’t quit. But I had to emphasize that the grind between 80 and 85 is extremely not fun.

This game only starts to feel like a MMO after 127 (Rank 5), it’s more like a single player linear RPG before that.

So why not work with other players for the 80-85 gap? In RO it made sense for players to band together through the slower portions because though the per mob experience was split a group could kill more mobs faster and longer than solo players. Also you had players you were chasing, why not get them to help? Is there a level limit for party play sharing EXP?

How come?, shouldn’t the dungeon runs and EXP cards allow you to easily get pass the 70~80 wall even before the X2 exp? I saved up my level 3 EXP cards and used them up to get pass the wall to reach Rank 4 and didn’t need to use any level 4 and 5 EXP cards until much later to reach rank 5.

There are 20 levels for exp sharing limit, and an experience penalty for killing mobs 5 levels below you, 5% per level. For mobs 5 levels above you, their stats will be increased by 10% per level.

The problem with grinding is that the mob density isn’t high enough for the party bonus experience to benefit at that level. It’s probably better now as most players had quit, but during the first few week you will be struggling to find a monster to kill. Also, the party sharing range is kinda low, so you can’t split up to find monsters.

@JohnSmith Not really, you still have to grind through a few level before getting to 85. The grinding itself is not a problem, it will probably only take few hours at most. The problem is that if you don’t feel like grinding, you have nothing to do.

Also, I’m mainly referring to those players who just tried to rush through without reading any guides. It’s easy to miss the level 50 dungeon and easy grinding spot if you aren’t aware of it, and by the time you knew about it, you already used up your exp cards and stuck.

I usually don’t call out to other people, but in this game there is a unique mechanic where a 5-person party would force a grind spot to spawn much more mobs than a solo person. With that grinding is much much lessened, heck, even quest is much faster with parties

And yet people refuse to party up.

I played from 1-140 and the only time I have to grind is 42 to 46, which take like 30 minutes.

That said it would be better if they can pop up something saying “You can now go dungeon xxx” when you reach a certain level. People these days are much lazier to search for stuff comparing to the old days.

I always try to do some grinding on the way whenever I find a good spot or groups of mobs, and grinded heavily at Tenet. Actually I had the level 70~80 exp wall problem with my first Char, plus mistakes in skipping quests, bad choice of class advancement and bad stats and skill allocation too. Then I rerolled and everything is fine, it’s only natural to make mistakes for the first time playing, I guess.

That’s not a valid reason to make the game unenjoyable for the younger player. Sure, they could lose out in terms of advantage compared to us old timer, but the game shouldn’t be so boring to those who don’t search for stuff.

I do know about this, but unless you have a melee class in your party (which they would probably prefer solo at lower level), your party will get ksed anyway.

Not that the ks is a problem anymore when most players had left, leaving enough monsters for every party.
