depends what kind of Role Playing you mean.
Role Playing as in RPers, the cringy bunch in MMO’s (Like LARPERS)
or
Role Playing as in playing/enjoying the story. (the majority that just wants a nice looking char, and girls look nice)
Female characters get more attention because they tend to have better design and costume features making them cute and appealing where as males tend to be kind of bland and basic when it comes to MMO’s.

In all Non-Gender locked games People will create opposite gender characters and tbh it doesnt really matter.
people have reasons why they want to be a certain gender just like you said yourself it is a roleplaying game and unless your looking for a relationship ( which is a bad idea in any Online game in general, but that’s a different topic).
Anyway ToS is an MMORPG and if you want to Be an opposite gender Go ahead!, in Aurons words " This is your Story"your free to do whatever you want with your character(s)/Family/Barracks.
But to answer your question i plan on making a male character as i feel the same way you do OP.

It seems most people who find it ‘creepy’ are because they view themselves as the character they play, rather than view the character they play as it’s own individual.

It’s normal to be sensitive in these topics. Being insensitive is way worse I believe. This is a game after all and a person plays a game for their own entertainment, not to please you.

i prefer looking at female characters i like how their models look so i play them… i don’t role play as my character personally, but even if i did whats wrong with role playing as the opposite gender xD

I’m always playing female chars because I’m female and the girl chars are always cute (no offense to the boys =P) though I’m a little tempted to play a boy’s char sometimes… Less harassment, less weirdos, less pervs etc… 
By the way, is there a marriage system in ToS?
