Dislike the Art Assets (IMHO)

The “uninspired” part comes from

  1. Lazy and a lack of equipment visual identities. Basically until you change to a new class, you’re character looks the same except for a slight change in weapon visuals.

This is so lazy like the other MMOs for e.g. - Dragon Nest, Tera.
Good MMOs with plenty of equipment designs (That you can actually see on your character in-game) - GRANADO ESPADA, MapleStory (such an old game).

I don’t look forward to changing equipment other than to get better stats, because they all look the same on my character except in my inventory window. Lazy or lack of will in improving art assets of the game.

  1. Skills have very Bland fx effects. I play archer, and when I cast oblique shot and heavy shot. I hardly see any difference AT ALL. Maybe I imagine there’s a slight difference…but it might just be wishful thinking. Look at Maple, each archer skill has a CLEAR visual distinction from each other. No colors to skills, just an arrow texture flying out of your bow. Should be obvious enough.

Hope this gets translated over to the developers in Korea? For all the hype this spiritual successor to Ragnarok is getting, the devs are being pretty lazy in terms of art execution. Looks like the devs are just rolling with nostalgia and doing nothing to advance the art style of Ragnarok. Even if not advancing the art style, put SOME Effort in making the art assets for the game.

This point is not necessarely bad design, In my case i really hate equipment bases visual. Sometimes you are forced to be ugly to be strong (i will never forget about Cabal Online, where i used a set two tiers bellow the top because the top sets were simply AWFUL). With costume system, you use whatever visual you want and can still keep strong equipment. Since the game have a costume system, once it go Commercial we probably will have more costumes. Now, if they don’t add more costumes and all we have are the class based ones, then yes, it’s lazy.

There shouldn’t be a need to “hate” equipment based visuals, it’s more to do with the fault of the developer not giving either enough attention to a certain set/equipment or they purposely make it ugly.

It shouldn’t be ugly but tasteful. Then that would be a reasonable way to design visuals.

Regarding your costume system, perhaps this is a beta and they didnt bother with equipment visual variety and fx for skills. I just hope costume system doesnt go purely cash based as do most MMOs or even mobile games. Even then I rather have my character reflect the equipment he/she is equipping currently. Costumes being a second added layer.

Can you give any particular examples?

As for not showing armor, that’s a design choice which caters to a very large audience and it’s definitely not going to change.

Either way, I absolutely detest maplestory skill effects, they’re all too flashy and exaggerated.

  1. IMC made Granado Espada, the only unique designed equipment are the end game weapons and armor. items from lvl1-100 are often recycled models with higher stats. its practical that way since these low end equipment are going to be just discarded asap while the end game equipment are going to be kept for a long time in the inventory of players.

  1. NO keep it that way, there is no need to put rainbows on arrows and turn this into an star wars scene.

  2. NO IMC has been revoking repeatedly that ToS is not RO successor see the official interviews.

either you like it or not Costumes will be pure cash, respect designers works and royalty/copyrights/licenses. people who don’t understand these things surely are those people who ask for a logo for free.

people make a living there. so don’t be an ■■■■■■■ who wanted things for free. just like how people wanted this game for free but demanding so much work as if the developers are doing a charity work for everyone here.

I personally can’t stand seperate visual equipment, so I can’t really agree – Never could get over that dreadful mismatched nonsense. This has less to do with lazyness and more to do with aesthetic/style opinion on their part. Happy that there is finally another mmo going the direction of ro & blade & soul where you get to just have a costume. :]

As an artist looking at the sheer amount of art work that must have gone into the game… I almost find it unthinkable to call it lazy. :astonished: Like, really really… all these thousands upon thousands of painted textures… really… really…

I can maybe understand the skill effects for archer though, and certain other things. I dislike that shiny mobs share the same effect as other skills because it’s confusing. I’d like them to look different.

(anyway art is fcking hard work lol)

I agree. There are a lot of things in this game that need improvement, but the art is definitely not one of them.

I have a BIG problem with ToS OUTFITS:

First: I think the higher Ranks should have better outfits, more detailed, that should transmit more power than lower Ranks. When I see Hackapells outfit, I regret a little that I starded to play with archers,

And Second: I observed when you keep the class and evolve to next class Circle , you keep exactly the same Outfit. I think next circle should get new details on Outfit, that shows that something changed.

I disagree about that, I think all costumes should be on equal terms. I particularly like wearing Peltasta outfit even when I’m on a much higher rank.

That could be nice though.

that is your problem. not theirs, the taste of each of everyone of us are somewhat a subjective matter. remember that. . . :unamused:

Maybe I passed the wrong idea.
I think all outfits shoud still beautfull.

I’m an illustrator and character designer, and I think Higher ranks outfits are too simple…For exemple, when you see the Plague Doctor Outfit, you immediately see that this is special, or Army Chaplain, Shepherd, Murmillo.
But When I see Mimic, Hackapell or Druid, I have an impression that this Outfits were lazy designed.

Disagree.
How are you to say its lazily designed when you don’t know what the concept and idea the designers had when making these outfits. It is their vision. Unless you back up what you say with concrete reasonings, yours will just be an opinion not at intellectual criticism. I am also into the art and design industry, you don’t just diss off other peoples design, thats rude to the designer. We all have our own set of philosophy and processes to our designs. What you might see as ugly, might be an abstract to the creator. If you knew about game development, redesigning character concepts is like going back to the drawing board and redoing a bunch of things which you should have already figured out in the predesign stage. They wont change it, that’s too much work unless of course if there was a big reason to like censorship or whatever. As people have mentioned, the costume system has a lot of potential. I’m eager to see what they come up with that.

I agree with u about c2 and c3 should have slightly better and upgraded costume design

Totally disagree with point 1. It’s not about lazy design, it’s conscious decision and I personally like it.

Yes, sometimes I do have thoughts like “it would be cool to see that awesome piece of armor affecting my character”, but then I remember that this game is not about seing your busty elven archer shaking her human values at your screen. I just play different games for that

What’s for point 2, I agree. Visual effects need some polish in my opinion. Though I would not like it to be ovewhelming as it is in most modern MMOs. I HATE when stupid double strafe looks like it’s going to erupt an effing volcano =/

I hope you arent refering to cow on treadmill mmos like wow or gw2.

Id rather have more gameplay depth than more visuals if budget was an issue

I would assume they intend to add more of both equivilnt to the number of current employees they have in each department however.

I pretty like this class design instead of having these same equipment design of most of mmo’s where there always slight bugs with some visuals like wings/scarfs etc…

Only thing that could be good is a slight difference in skin between 1st/2nd and 3rd circle of a class. But that’s something to think about only when there will be the 80’s class skins.

Always thinking class based skin is lazyness is just painfully sad. They choosed this way of building skins because that’s what they thinked fitted the most this game.

Anyway i like this system and it fits ToS. Visual base equipment is also good but only to mmo’s that fits it. Lastly most of the times, visual equipment system has a tendency to works a lot on the female character appearance and makes most of the male characters look either ugly or uncool. At least ToS give us male characters with good visual and that’s good for RP

So you want IMC Games to design hundreds of outfits for each 80 job classes because you’re picky about armor you’re only going to wear for about 5 levels before you switch to another one.

Yeah, I’m sure everyone would love to wait 5 more years before they can beta test the game, since visuals are so much more important in a video game than, I dunno, the actual game?

THIS. Even a simple color change would do, like from the cleric’s C1 gray garb to white for C2 for example. Wouldn’t that look cool? :sunglasses:

It would really help get rid of the frustration of looking less “cool” than others if you’re gunning for C3, especially for those already sick of looking at the same uniform after 40+ levels.

It’s a matter of taste, what some people finds nice, others might not.
But when the appearance is tied directly with power, some people will be unsastified. There is no way they ever please everyone.
I like when they don’t tie power and looks, so i can look the way i want. And not look like a clown when i don’t use all parts of the same set for any reason.
