Blurr's Thoughts on a PVP Channel

Adding an optional PVP channel to the game…

Here are my thoughts while the topic is hot:

As I’ve learned from the days of pvp guild dungeons on iRO Chaos, open pvp doesn’t always mean competing against each other, entirely. The game’s goals are still at stake. You’re going to want to work together to overcome some of the game’s biggest challenges.

Besides a few specific popular areas outside of certain cities, I wouldn’t imagine there would be enough world pvp player congestion to ever fully halt your leveling progress. It probably would be more along the lines of an inconvenience. The real benefit of attempting to level on a PVP channel would be to have the ability to keep other players away from boss spawns, rare mobs, and other valuable spawn zones.

You risk losing your life and time with the possibility of temporarily winning over territory for yourself – leaving you with a greater number of monsters spawning and a more constant stream of experience. Basically, I don’t think the server will be as much of an insane, non-stop battlefield that people are making it out to be.

And as for the lore – I don’t really follow or care about it. But I can’t imagine like-minded heroes having personal spats over the same goals in the story would be going that much against the lore. If anything, it adds more realism.

Don’t get me wrong, there are right and wrong ways to go about adding a PVP channel to this game. But regardless, I trust IMC Games can implement it in a tasteful way. Just like I feel they’ve been with most of the game’s design choices.

IMC Games is listening. IMC Games is serious about taking community feedback. Let this forum be the place where that feedback is heard. Show them that there’s a right way to do this, where generally everyone’s happy. A way that still follows that Tree of Savior swing of things. I think you know what I’m talking about. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be reading these forums so eagerly waiting for this damn game.

Disclaimer: (You can disagree with me and/or dissect my words all you want, but this is simply my opinion. If you’ve acknowledged it, you’re rad. If you’ve dismissed it, whatevz~)

TL;DR:
Viva la PVP channel!

Just like RO1, i was in it for the PVP. Nothing gives me better joy in an mmo than working hard to achieve better gears, weapons, accessories etc and seeing that accomplish show in a pvp match. PVP is a must and how ever IMC decides to utilize it is up to them. But i really hope there are more types of pvp than just what ive seen on youtube vids. Even that much if fine by me but a pvp channel is a good idea. GVG, open world pvp, i can do without pk, dare i say WOE, haha, arena pvp, even moba style pvp, capture the flag type pvp, the possibility is endless indeed. Bottom line I WANT PVP!!! hahah

Maybe having the button that switch on PK mode (as many games) and if you get killed by someone would be awsome having a system that allows to hire mercenaries npcs/real players to kill your killer. Or something like that, just an idea as many others.

I mean, I see where you’re coming from. But keep in mind that there will with-out-a-doubt be strict restrictions on PK level range, allowing only players within a generally similar level range to attack each other in open world.

If a large group/guild is camping a spot that you’d also like to camp, and forcing you out of it – how would that be any different from a large group overpowering your presence in a spawn zone on a non-PVP channel? In the end, the stronger group is going to be the one getting the kills, loot, etc – regardless if PVP is enabled between the two of them or not.

To me, your claim is a non-issue. There are always going to be scenarios throughout your leveling that cause you to lose out on beneficial things due to other groups being better than you, whether your’e on a PVP channel or not.

And as for the drama: Drama will inevitably be a part of any game’s community. Having a PVP specific section of the forums will help with that as much as it can.

Well that’s why it’s suggested as a channel. If you don’t like PVP, you don’t have to switch to the channel. You can stay on the safe channels, farm, etc. When I played TOS, there were up to 20 channels you could play on depending on the population of the area. Having one switched out, while keeping all the other ones, shouldn’t hurt a thing. I think it’s a much better idea than having a dedicated PvP server. As much fun as world PvP is, sometimes it’s nice to chill in a safe world, and honestly I dislike the idea of dividing all the players because of preference. Back when I played Ragnarok, I had characters on both Chaos and Loki servers, because I didn’t like being separated from my friends.

it’s a risk reward thing. you don’t -have- to join a PvP channel, but if you want to do so in order to farm an empty grind spot, then you have to venture the risk for the potential reward. seems logical and fair to me. as a PvE player, what’s wrong with staying in the crowded map or choosing a better option with more risk?

edit: furthermore, your proposed alternative, a PvP server, wouldn’t solve any problems if there were still a lack of channels on the PvE server.
lemme illustrate:
Scenario 1 = PvE channels full + PK channel = bad according to you
Scenario 2 = PvE channels full + no PK channel -> this is still the same isn’t it?

you’re assuming several things here.

  1. that territorial control, which is a natural part of PvP, is always bad
  2. that the advantage that strong and organized PvPers have, is an undeserved advantage
  3. that the ‘weak’ have no way to systematically organize themselves to retaliate and everything is an uneven playing field
  4. that even if all of the above did happen, not having a PvP channel would be a better situation than having one. (see my illustration)

“Apparently the only one who understands”? What a pretentious little guy.

You show a massive lack of knowledge on the matter and also assume that advantages=unfairness which is also completely wrong.

Why do you gotta be an attention-whore like that? No one cares about your name. The only thing that matters is whether what you’re saying has merit itself. A poster’s own name is the last thing that belongs in the topic field.

Anyway, the maps are too confined, too linear, and with too many easily blockaded bottlenecks for Open PvP and Region control like in RO. I guess if it’s some separate server that’s fine if people want to expose themselves to that experience, but personally I dont think it would work. Who knows though. I’m no expert, and the game is barely out of its first beta.

Why are you assuming that there’s only going to be one powerful guild/group stomping everyone, all over the worldmap, at all times?

I know for a fact that as soon as one of the many other large guilds hear about a group taking over an area for a specific benefit, they too will be rushing over there to get in on the action and rewards.

Think of it as kind of a food chain type thing. Medium sized fish prey on the smaller, then the bigger ones eat them. Sometimes you’ll be in situations where the big guys are fighting it out. You can either choose to join up with them or simply hunt in a different area. Or just not hunt on the PVP channel at all. You’re always going to be at a disadvantage if you don’t keep a constant competitive mindset in MMOs – PVP or not.

No one’s forcing you to be the best. If that’s a way you want to play – then by all means.

That’s the beauty of it all. The choice is yours!

Player interaction throughout these kinds of game environments aren’t nearly as black and white as you’re making them out to be.

Lol if you knew me, you’d understand that I’m equally as full of myself as a player, as I am serious about how this game shapes up. Especially from a PVP standpoint.

Get used to seeing my name. In topic titles and in your sleep.

PvP channel is fine for me as long as there are restrictions such as level range limitations to prevent unfair fight. Players can only fight each other if they are in the same level range (around 5 or more level difference at max). Or else, it’s gonna be disastrous.

PvP channel can also make the game more “alive”. Some kind of alliance will be beneficial and a lot of dramas will occur in game. I personally love watching people flaming each other in world chat and ended up in a fight. 1 player will provoke the other one, bringing their friends over and started a catfight. After that, I usually will bring my friends as a 3rd party, slaughtered them all, and show them who’s the boss. This really brings back a lot of memories from my former MMORPGs such as RF, Perfect World, etc.

Besides that, GvG is not needed anymore because we can simply bring our guilds to fight each other off at PK channel. This saves IMCGames a lot of work.

I planted a seed and took care of it and it grew an apple.
You planted the seed and poured acid on it and it did not grow an apple.

I now have an advantage over you because I have an apple and you do not. Is that unfair?

(At the risk of answering the rhetorical question, it is not because you are failing to distinguish between an unfair, undeserved advantage with a fair, well earnt advantage)
