Why players aren't coming back

I’m an older player who returned today.

I played CBT1, CBT2 and open beta/early access before I quit and watched everyone on my buddy list 1 of whom spent $100s on the early access packs and gifting other gamers it too to get them into ToS.

I hyped up ToS a lot more than I’m proud to say and thought it was going to be the number 1 mmorpg of 2017.

I’m not going to answer your question about why players aren’t coming back since it has a lot to do with why it failed in the first place and massive disappointment.

Why it failed in the first place? You name it, there are countless reasons why it failed for every person individually. For me it wasn’t the gold sellers or tokens or how grindy & repetitive it got to lvl up later on it was that Tree of Savior started to feel like other games way too much to me. It reminded me of them and how the other games have failed me, the reason I got so invested in ToS in the first place. I was tired of being used and dealt a bad hand by gaming companies releasing new good looking games and couldn’t handle all the signs of abuse, so I had to leave. It has already been beaten to death so I’ll skip straight to why ToS can still succeed now and attract a lot of new players even if it doesn’t get the 10,000s of players it made quit or the 10,000s more who never tried it in the first place due to bad reviews & word of mouth.

Its pretty simple, advertise more and market the game towards kids.

I know 100,000s of 6 - 16 year olds would probably be in love with Tree of Savior but i’m guessing none of them know of its existence.

Make this game the maplestory of our childhood to them and ToS can be popular again.

The first thing you do is make a game for kids to play, easier for kids to grasp, learn about, and want to get others into. Then start making the game appeal to them, so they want to show it to all their friends.

The people into Tree of Savior now are probably older, young adults or already adult gamers who just aren’t into MMORPGs as much anymore. Not unless something really revolutionary comes out, which ToS was for a time… and it seemed like it was going to become the perfect dream game we all wanted until after a while the harsh reality got out and it reminded us more and more of other games.

Make the game accessible without steam and make it easy to get friends into, give it a better sense of community in game and make a lot of content about socializing with other players.

Tree of Savior had one of the best gaming communities ever at a time… without the community I dare say this game wouldn’t even exist in the first place.

The main problem with it is that its trying to get teenagers and adults to buy a game at its core best enjoyed by kids I don’t think much in ToS has to be scrapped, its just that we older gamers are tired of mmorpgs in general and ToS shouldn’t blame itself for that. Many more features can be added though, don’t make the game just about combat, add in fishing, mining, racing, planting farms & owning houses your lobby doesn’t count add in cool wow maps like underwater, outer space, volcano, i can’t believe this is in the game, everyone who played maplestory back then knows what I am talking about. Its already a very beautiful game but when I played it too many of the maps felt… the same? This made it feel bland and repetitive, the game was already pretty linear unlike RO and even Maplestory at a time. ToS would make one of the best non linear adventure enjoy everything you see and not focus on lvling and quest progression type of games. Add in more things to do with other people and incentives.

This also means it would be best if the game didn’t involve pay2win or pay2progress but instead made players play the game more & complete fun engaging task to achieve things.

Oh yeah, if you manage to get a lot of kids to play you will need a reason for a lvl 200 to play with a lvl 1 - 30 newbie they just got in the game, add dungeon quest and fun bosses that make players the same level to match it, limit damage & stats too of course.

Too much of the game was just focused on individual progression when I played… like a single player game, its all fun and good if the sole purpose of the game is the story but its supposed to be a mmorpg right?

Also, add in more mobility for all classes. Swordsman having classes and mounts made it so unfair. Give a fast ride-able mount/pet to every class or give them a blink, whatever fits their role.

Oh well enough of this, I can go on for eternity talking about things that could make ToS a better or more popular game. Time to enjoy ToS again for a little while.

It is known that Cata can clear 40f before. Until the rebalance comes here.

Trust me, no one actually good at the game is actually doing quests to level since may 2017, some people only got it now tho.

I agree, the game would be better with the same “random dungeon with adjusted level” daily thing all top mmo’s have.

There’s no pay2win or pay2progress, at least to me (outside of pvp duh), token is a necessity only for a more “hardcore” playstyle, it would be cool if we had a character bank or a way to deposit money without token as you lose a % of your silvers on 3 star maps. But i think that’s just a measure against bots since you can just scroll back to city to dodge death.

That’s in all mmo’s. You would basically NEVER farm items or money in a group on Ragnarok.
For the leveling they’ve increased the bonus exp you get from party members on fields, so when the exp gets divided you don’t think about your friends as a malus :stuck_out_tongue:

There’s a free pet for everyone in your mail that can be ridden by all classes but you cannot use skill on it without the mounted class attribute. Movement speed is fine tbh, also mounts give around 10% extra movement, not that much.

This game feels like rocket science to many, there are too many things to explain and the user experience/intro is incredibly bad. There are a lot of things not explained in the game at all and you really feel lost, especially with all the misinformation you can get on the forum and on sites like tosbase.

An edit for the p2win thing: a friend of mine that joined the game back in september and has been playing the game for around 330 hours as now, bought 24 tokens this month. He cashed 0 money on the game.

Just to point out that players can clear the 330 raid event with newbie equipment if they put their minds to it. I cleared it with no trans, no anvil Vien mace + lv 270 white equipment with no stats or trans together with Krystal and Castello. Max is 2.2~2.4k matk only. Here’s the proof you want.

It is certainly not impossible, it just takes a much longer time especially when you don’t know what the boss does. Like for us took us 2-3hours. Fun times :3

Gear wise R9 is definitely way better than the period when R8 is first released. It is still pretty easy to clear most content with low/mid ranking gears.

Ok you win the argument that it is possible. However do you really think newbies will farm there 2-3hours per run? So, since it is possible, it is ok to let it be and be content with just too much RNG to be viable and to clear much faster?

You said that “players can clear the 330 raid event with newbie equipment if they put their minds to it” so we impose these burden to newbies because it is possible?

Bro they are literally doing the run in 3, with no equipment, with no aoe gear mergen, with featherfoot and sadhu taoist. They take 3k damage every hit lol.

40 mins is medium geared if im going to make a guess of it. Since Nekorin tried it with no trans it took them 2hrs or 3hrs.

You said it was trash run but ok with medium geared chars.

A decent party is someone you can just leech into, like high trans people right? So it is locked behind too much grinding.

Nope. If a player can participate in a dungeon run in the first place, their gear shouldn’t be as bad as what I use in the ktest video. There is some sort of prerequisite gear check in the form of challenge mode and ability to gather enough materials to craft those raid stones.

What burden is the game imposing on newbies? It is way easier to get gear now to match most of the content the game throws at the players other than the high end content (HG/330Raid/ET). If everyone has easy access to clear those content, there isn’t much meaning to gear farming.

How strong a weapon then? To be able to farm on these dungeon because of gear checks youre talking about? Trans how much? And how much Physical or Magical is required so we can guess if it is a whale or not.

The items newbies get are trash weapons. Good stats weapon are being taken by you and me and other veterans. If not we and if there is available we drive the price very high.

The whole “make your unique build” should be more developed, creating more sinergy between circles to kill the “meta” builds
ALSO giving money/utility classes some offensive/tactic skills to make them useful at TBL/PVE too

And talking about TBL: BALANCE THE GOD DAMN THING TO KILL THE GEAR = WIN
Enhacement/Transcendence shouldn’t be working in there, it’s already a nightmare to fight full solmiki set cash whales, its even worse if they +25/T10 them

Also reducing the enhacement level limt to +15, higher values just make the game worthless in terms of challenge and it’s well known that many players abused that enhacement bugs to get +25 and higher items

The main drawback that keeps me from being motivated about the game is the prospect that if I do invest into Transcending a weapon or even getting a weapon worth Transcending. It will only be usable for one of my characters. The thought of having to do the same with each character just puts me off big time.

Restrictions like this just kill any excitement for me. I find myself wanting to or actually going ahead and extracting my weapon from the Trans so I can play another character. Not the most efficient thing to do, but after spending all of that time and energy in just the weapon itself, it kinda feels like I must when I want to switch.

For 330 raid and 340HG, around 3-4k patk/matk will suffice if you go as a party. Why do you say that weapons that doesn’t have good stats are trash weapons? They are still pretty usable and are good equipment to use while the player farms for better equipments.

What iToS is missing currently is ways to market the game to potential players. Steam is a good platform to market the game if they know how to make use of the platform.

The R9 patch is also not fully implemented, especially with the multihit changes and buffs to hoplites/cataphracts/dragoons. Content wise we are still lacking in end game things to do, which I hope IMC will address it soon.

Ahh… I see after months and months of being away, the subject of “ToS is dead/dying” is still a hot topic.

The problem with this game for me is a hate/love relationship.
This game gives me nostalgia, when I played it first I was absolutely mesmerized, but the more I played the more linear it became, some story quests are great and original, but it’s just on 1 character, you’re simply not gonna do every quest again and again on every new roll, just to allow yourself to grind more exp so you have more characters to get better gear so with this better gear you can grind more effectively, endless circle.

I’ll never find again the feeling I first had when playing ToS.

I was about to play again but since my main’s a doppel 3, with the new matador thing and how restricted this class is, it’s either rank reset or go back to waiting.

In my opinion, at this point this game won’t ever really die, there will always be those 2-3k players, small (very small) peaks for updates, and the day it will close will be when they decide iTOS doesn’t bring enough money anymore.

It’s fun seeing this again, it kinda reminds me of the whole hueknights/doomknights forum meta, it actually made the game feel more alive.

It is only suffice by you but newbies dont dare to go there if they only have 3-4k attack damage. Someone already up there commented about that, didnt you read?

^What this comment rings to you? 4k attack is only trans 3 i think. My daily experience tells me people dont do that. Youre just making up that people do that DG with just 4k attack. Anyway that 4k damage is the main DPS not a leecher from stronger trans party mate. If you try to at least observe people ingame doing the raid dg. It is 100% all veterans or whales doing the DPS, why? because nobody wants to waste time and risk the run? So a DPS main newbies are left behind. Sure it is possible and you want newbies with just 4k to clear that DG. However practicality dictates you should not.

So what this new player gonna do to be able to clear that raid or other end game stuffs? Isnt it climb the RNG wall? Farm, farm and farm to get good stats then break that weapon with good stats, rinse and repeat.

Advertising your product is maybe good but it is double edge sword. Brand image has flaws. If your brand has more negativity on it then it is most likely going to snowball into more people hating this game. People are leaving the game more than ever. We had rank 9 and only manages to get 3k? Where in “rebalancing” before we had 8k to try the new changes? They didnt come back again because it is still sh1t and they wont comeback again after experiencing this bad game over and over again.

Literally who gives a ■■■■ if you can’t do the 330 raid with shitty gear (even though I’m pretty sure you can complete it just fine, because nothing in this game is actually challenging, it just takes longer the less DPS you do) since it costs something like 8-12mil depending on availability and server to get all of the raid stones to do it. This is obviously not something intended for people without at least some basic level 350 gear and a few levels of transcendence. You could just sell the portal stones you get from challenge mode instead until you’ve got some decent gear. What MMO lets you just skip straight to farming the raid that gives BIS gear without even getting gear appropriate to your level first?
