Why do I get hit for so much more when my gear breaks?

Like armor/eg is about 60def/60def. hp around 15k
So it only blocks 120worth of damage.
But when it breaks, I’m suddenly getting 2-3 shot’d when before it took a lot more hits than that.

Same with magicdef which with my bracelets and necklace are only 100magdef, but once they’re broken, I’m getting 2shot’d by the same magic atks that before would take 6-8

Because they stop working while broken?

yea but its like “well i can go on for a bit more taking 120more damage per hit” but instead I’m taking way more damage than just 100-120more

Def is not flat reduce

Meanwhile… even I had a broken mace my attacks are all the same, weird…

You need to understand how Defence and Magic Defence work in this game.

If an enemy has 400 Attack, then you having 400 Defence will make that enemy do 1 damage to you regardless of whichever skill that enemy uses. If you have 350 Defence, then that enemy will have an effective Attack of 50 against you. BUT that 50 gets multiplied by whatever hard hitting skill (like Blue Spion Archer’s Spiral Arrow) it has.

So if the enemy’s skill or even basic attack has a modifier of 1000%, with 400 Defence you get hit for 1 damage, but with 350 Defence you get hit for 50 * 1000% = 500 damage. With enough Defence you can make most things hit you for 1 damage.

tl;dr - If your defence stat exceeds the enemy’s attack stat, you get hit for 1 damage no matter what. If not, you get subject to nasty multipliers.

Most multipliers apply after armor reduction, which is why you can take less damage with a high enhance plate chest vs. an unenhanced cloth chest aganist a mob that does strike damage - because even though you take 50% more damage from strike with plate and 25% less with cloth, you’re taking way more base damage with the cloth piece due to lower defense. Most notably, if you’re fighting higher level mobs, they can get some pretty huge attack multipliers against you that increases the higher the level gap is. They also get defense multipliers, which is why armor break effects are so good for fighting higher level mobs.

^ Correct. Which is why I don’t understand the mass amounts of people complaining about flat reductions or bonuses. People should understand the damage formula better.

It especially hurts my brain when people take this kind of “flat reductions don’t matter” thinking into PvP, because in PvP defense is even more important. Glass bracelets will take you a lot further than PvE accessories like gladiator bands, for example, and plate is generally more valuable than leather for its defense since you’re unlikely to dodge much in high level PvP - you’re reducing Meteor’s damage BEFORE it gets multiplied by 4x, which could be the difference between taking 1000x4 = 4000 damage or 700x4 = 2800. Not to mention every single ability has a potential +100% multiplier just from attributes.

Did I just step into the conscious part of the forum or something? I am pleased

Defense is a very powerful stat.
A typical statement for instance was “What would you do at 200 and Blue Spion Archers”.
Blue Spion Archers should be hitting you for 1 damage non crit with Spiral Arrow if your class is not forced by skill requirements to not use a Shield, excusing Deeds of Valor/Suicide. You can go from Spiral Arrow being a 1 shot, to needing 20,000 casts of Spiral Arrow to kill you by just throwing on a Shield + Aspersion.

With Pardoners a lot of the damage woes in this game are solved by using 3 slots for Defense (Top, Shield, Bottom) + Aspersion and it’s ridiculous how many enemies look like they do magic damage but actually are hitting us with physical.

Though part of the issue is probably the misunderstood love for elemental daggers when doing
11%> more damage with an elemental dagger rarely justifies taking 40, 50, 60, or 300* more damage from not having a Shield to drop damage to 1 after Aspersion.

My Corsair weeps at his lack of shield. Since you can get a shield that gives a good chunk of elemental attack, I hope they add offhand weapons that add defense at some point. Or a pistol that buffs Corsair skill levels, c’mon IMC what is the point of c3 Corsair.

@SlyGoat What’s the BIS plate set or pieces for lv.170-220? What would you recommend for a PVP sword class?

Is this 220 set good? Or is it still impossible (?) to complete at the moment like Virtov?

I already have a preferred leather set (different, non-set pieces). Great for PVE except against magic mobs and maybe not for long against high level archer mobs (though I have the DEX/evasion to compensate for receiving extra physical damage). It’s still also viable in PVP except against dominantly stab/pierce type classes (spear users, p.Atk archer builds).

Is keeping a Cloth set for situational use worth it as well, or will there be only minimal difference and that plate is still good enough for general use?

My personal view is that Cloth is actually the “general” set because it provides a small amount of physical defense, evasion and magical defense.

Plate is good because in the current environment the majority of monsters in this game deal physical damage, and Aspersion lets us reduce them to 1 damage.

Imo Leather armor isn’t really good outside of possibly offering attractive bonus stats unless you’re up against really hard hitting physical mobs where their base damage is so high, that plates defense isn’t as valuable.

In that case however you’re probably dealing with something that will kill you in 2-5 hits, and relying on RNG to survive isn’t very attractive either at that point in such a fragile situation.
