What i loved about RO which doesnt excists in ToS

First i wanna say, before people come and say “this is not ro” i know this but the people like me who heared about project R1 long before the game was called ToS now that it was made to be like a new Ragnarok! so i think if theres one game to compare ToS to than it is definetly Ragnarok Online. I even wrote a message to Hakyu Kim when project R1 was announced and asked him if he knows why people LIKE Ragnarok so much… never got an answer :stuck_out_tongue:

so here i want to mention some of my PERSONAL points why i loved ragnarok and still love it! and why i believe so far ToS cnt compete to it. to be honnest i lost hope that it will actually ever be able to compete!

-I always loved the character design of RO and i am also fine with the design of ToS i think in the way the games are even, except that i really dislike the 3d monster sprites of ToS.

-i loved to Grind or leach my Characters at different places, anyone remembers the old times? where mages leveled at argiope or stalactic Golems? i loved it. in ToS Except of some 1337 builds and engame dungeons everyone levels the same, same places same spots same Monsters.

-Places like Glastheim where u mosty needed to group up if u dont wanna spend millions of zeny for potions! i Remember myself always hoping to team up with a priest not just because of the heal also the buffs were really nice to have, which even turned leveling in a party much more fun to me. and again in ToS Except of Earth Tower u simply go alone, the enemys all feel the same most of them are even onehit until early 200th levels…

-i loved every single class in RO, i know it is much less than ToS but i always felt every class was really unique and bringing good benefits to a group, of course i didnt like to play every class by myself i had my personal favorites but still i never thought one of the classes should be removed from the game. for ToS it just feels like we have unlimited choices and avaible classes but in reality it feels like most basic classes have at most 3 enjoyable or usefull builds and the playstyle feels just so boring what ever i play… its like im just trying to shoot out my whole rotation as fast as possible to wait for the cds to cool off.

-my next point is the OST of both games to be honnest i like both but RO still wins this i loved to sit in Prontera and listen to the music sometimes even for hours i often enjoyed grinding on specific maps because the track of it was just nice, one example is the track Through the tower, it still gives me goosebumps. in ToS the music seems so Random and i have quiet many tracks that i really dislike…

-then the world in Ro was also better in my opinion , there were many small hub cities like izlude which i just liked compared to ToS. Because in ToS it feels like they just made a few citys for the sake of having a meeting point for players every 150 levels… it feels so artifical to me, hard to explain…

-this point many people will disagree with me for sure^^ i really loved the merchant shops in Ragnarok i mean player shops! i enjoyed to run arround checking shop after shop. (i know its quite inconvenient but it was part of a nice atmosphere to me). i dont know much about the buff and repair shops in Tos so i leave it to this.

-what i also liked about RO is that u needed a specialized charcter for crafting not just the right class also the stat contribution was important which kept crafted gear to stay at good prices and there was always demand for elemental weapons. in ToS u just make a Character for Crafting and level it.

-What i personally miss the most about RO is simply WoE i had fun for so many years and i never found a game that was more fun in guild pvp than Ro. almost every class had its part or role in WoE. in ToS i havent tried any kindof PvP so far except of a low levl duell.

-The upgrade system of Ro is also one of the Things i liked, i remember when i farmed Katanas in Byalan just to make some of them +10. not much else to say here as ToS has a Similar System just much more expensive.

-MVP’s in RO hands down i never thought it was a good system in RO but still i had fun with it. But in ToS honestly every boss or worldboss feels the same mostly because they are moving and attacking damn slowly and usually its just a cut it down fight. without any real challenge or mechanic.

-The Card system of RO i loved grinding for cardsit was always a good motivation for grinding and sometimes everyone found a card. but in Tos i think the equivalent system is the Monster Gems, i think the idea itself is nice but i HAAVENT found a single gem yet after 1 lvl 220, 1 lvl 170, 1 lvl 150 and many more character over lvl 100!!! like wtf.

-The elemental system in Ragnarok this system often decided where i could level with my characters like especially for priest and mage classes, but in ToS i really never cared about that so far because i dont really have much choises when i level because even if i suck against a moster i still need it for a quest or its still almost onehit.

-I miss Agi and Flee Characters i always had at least one agi character for simple farming without the need to concentrate. especially the RO monk was always fun to farm with him. in ToS u have a few buffs but except of that u can only go for stronger autoattacks at least i think so( correct me if i am wrong.

-Friends in Ro, the only think i had to care for was to stay in level range of my friends so that whenever we felt like, we could start to party and play together, in ToS u are basicly forced to quest if u dont want to grind like crazy but the quest system is really giving people a hard time to stay on the same stage. besides the restrictions and troubles that appear in ToS .(like dungeon limitation)

thats it so far if u guys have any more things to add or complains just write them i wonder if others feel the same as i do.
Edit: i should add that i talked about classic ro i have never played renewal!

funny how people in RO talks about “Why does this game not have some kind of a Universal NPC where you can access every posted items in every player’s shop”

Yeah people complain for the sake of complain.

That was the impression given, and I really think the original name was just for marketing purposes. People knew the name behind Ragnarok, Kim Hakkyu, was on board.

Agreed on this. I wish there was more variety as far as group content and non-instanced dungeons go.

Ragnarok’s classes were very linear. Everyone pretty much did the same thing with them - you took the same skills and stats to be effective. There was very little alteration unless you decided to play the rare trap Ranger (or something similar), which meant you weren’t really going to be welcomed in WoE or places like Biolabs parties, so most people didn’t. I’d say ToS wins out by far when it comes to variety, you can 5/10 opt to take something not meta and be welcomed in most parties. Earth Tower is about the one exception here. And lets not forget some classes were completely broken and were never going to be balanced: Wanderer, which as the masochist I am, I mained at first.

I think at this point you’re on a nostalgia track. ToS will never be RO, as you stated at the beginning, lol. That’s just personal preference. I’m one of the few ex-RO players who seems to like the music here better. Not to mention the art is just gorgeous.

Character shops were more fun in RO, but I doubt we’ll ever see this here because they are trying to combat the bot problem though the auction house, at least in one way. It was nice to be able to set up a shop anywhere and just put your own prices. I’d say “well there wasn’t a need to compare” but Ragial kind of killed that, so the only real difference again is just the ability to set up anywhere.

It’s pretty much the same here? I don’t see much of a difference. You select a base class, which leads eventually to a crafting class. In fact there’s more variety here because the only useful crafting class by the end was Geneticist. Nothing else made that much money, because the weapons, arrows, etc were just too easy to make or were replaced by other game content.

WoE was fun, and it’s too early to say ToS will not have major guild battle content that isn’t similar. They are in the process of creating Arena so more stuff will likely come after that too. The game is new.

I majorly disagree here. Thanks to the upgrade system, RO become majorly P2W. If ToS became P2W many people would just quit. All those little upgrading events? People spending 100 bucks every few weeks so they can be competitive? No thanks, not going through that again. The upgrade system here is at least all F2P.

Agreed on boss monsters. More mechanics please.

Were having a card system come out here, actually. It looks a little OP as well. No idea how that is going to play out. Just search the forums. Monster gems are also similar to the card system since they enhance skills by being equipped on gear.

Yeah elemental system hasn’t seemed to make much of a difference to me here? I mean unless it’s for extra attack damage, there’s no need to worry with it. It makes it more simple, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a crafting class come out that makes elemental converters like there were on RO. Need fire damage? Pop this scroll.

I also ended up maining an Assassin in the end, so I know your feels there, but Corsair is actually quite close. A high DEX Corsair will give you a lot of evasion, only problem is magic attacks do not miss so on half of the mobs you will be hurting. Double Weapon Assault is the auto attack skill here.

I’m going to copy paste myself from another thread here:

I still say a big issue with the game is just lack of social interaction. There is nothing fun and simple that pulls people together in a collective area to just goof off. That kind of thing ends up feeling like a part of the game, giving people a reason to log in passed questing and grinding. It gets role play groups going, guild/personal drama, friendships, etc. Ragnarok had it at South Prontera because of dead branches (an item that spawns a random monster with a low chance of spawning one that wipes everyone on a map), Wakfu has it with the boats that connect the nations which ended up being the PvP area, etc.

The bad thing is with the way the maps are designed there is no where that actually pulls players to just hang out from levels 1-280. Really there is no need for social interaction at all until 200+ beyond dungeons and Demons/Dinas. You could say the cities, but most people are just passing through or getting likes, which to top that off, we have three central cities generally pulling people everywhere.

I’m not sure how IMC could try to pull people together for fun in a general, every day kind of way, but I do hope to see something unique for ToS.

If I want to see anything from RO implemented here that’s not, it would just be more social interaction. And maybe dead branches, lol. I like ToS as it is for the most part but some mechanics changes, like magic being unavoidable (just let them CRIT Idc) and bosses being virtually the same, more content after a lot of bug fixes… Yeah that’s all welcomed too. Shall just have to see how it plays out.

This is one of the major weaknesses of TOS for me. You have almost no choices where to level and it feels pretty much the same with every class. I loved how in RO every class was efficient in different places.

Nope, I actually agree with you. I loved checking all the small player shops, too!

RO has a lot more depth to its mechanics. The world was larger, more authentic.

The monsters were more diverse, and have better characteristics. Here the monsters are just random ugly things with weird names.

I still like the variety of classes in ToS, but that’s pretty much the only thing that’s better than RO (and of course, being a newer MMO, it has better graphic, more convenience, etc, but those aren’t the core of the game).

I’m really disappointed how backward this game is, considering it’s the same producer.

Ah as for authetication… The quests are badly translated to the point the NPC’s all speak the same way. They have 0 personality. They really need a creative writer on staff to help with that. I mean, most MMOs the quests become repetitive. It’s just here they are repetitive and very uninteresting due to the writing style. Even ones with decent story lines have no personality whats so ever.

Hmm. Last I checked, the dialogues are translated by fans. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong; right now, my memory is spotty at best. They’re readable at best, but it’s like you’ve said: they need some more fluff in terms of personality.

To be honest, I did notice some dialogues being better in quality than some others. Doesn’t change the fact that we do need someone to polish everything to improve writing quality. ^^;;

I can’ t really agree with you guys, each time anyone would start a class in RO u have to be in best places known by everyone to grind so as a mage you will meet most of the time mages because this place is reknown to be grinding for mages.

Mechanics in RO, yes but meta specifics, you can’t be a bit exotic in RO with ur build.

Except personal tastes, i agree about:

-player shops, you felt that Prontera was living because so many people were gathered.

-Boss monsters mechanics, we need those challenges nothing more to say.

-“Open world dungeon”, like in RO u need to go in some places but u can’t reach those places without a party or 2, that would be nice in TOS.

-And elemental system, agreed on this too because i can’t feel it’s really impacting in game as said before it’s more just extra damage than anything else.

No idea if it was fan based translation, but for the most part it’s just boring. .-. I mean, if it was I’m sure there is plenty of community creative writers who wouldn’t mind re-writing for a little more “fluff.” I’d be down for it. Could even be a fun little community project. Everything would have to be GM approved though, and as for how hard it would be I have no idea. Not into coding, but I imagine not extremely difficult, so…

Is it just me or is the fact that they are monetizing a game that is fan-translated a bit embarrasing?

I mean, it’s not like this game has so many dialogue lines compared to other games. They could at least hire one professional translator.

Camera rotation. what? too short?

i dont think any game can replicate ragnarok’s WOE :frowning:

I’m not trying to offending Kim really, it’s just there are few flaws that he had done to RO and for some reason still get repeated on ToS. Current Peltasta / Elementalist are just like Priest/Wizard in RO Kim’s era, nobody will accept you in party unless they filled.

Current official RO is actually a bit better if we talking about end game for “RO vs ToS” debate. More like 13 of 15 classes can join a party with key skills and the lack of a class in a party can be meaningful, in ToS only Healer and Peltasta are really turning party upside down…

Regardless, ToS still giving things that RO lost. If RO doesn’t lost its direction, it will be different story…

I think ToS is better than RO in certain aspects.

What I miss the most from RO is:

  • exploration feeling, no NPCs that tell you were to go, hundreds of options at any time
  • random location instant respawn spawns, making you run around and fight through the maps
  • leaked database tables with exact drop rates

Even though I love browsing through player shops, I can live without them.

The biggest thing for me is RO’s world seems much more complex than ToS’s world (talking about the map design), with more towns and public dungeons that supported multiple level brackets.

Yeah the world in RO is just ultra connected. Talking about Glast Heim it isn’t just a dungeon for F1 to F10. All the maps are connected with each other somehow.

About world size we cant complain yet. RO is years old and its early days werent that much better than tos.

The size itself isn’t actually a problem. For a game in open beta, ToS world is already pretty huge. It’s just that while RO is just like leaving your house to go for a walk, many paths in all directions, ToS is like you are trapped inside two long corridors.

Indeed true for early maps (yep, level 100 is early game), not so true later. We didnt feel like that on RO because there were little to no quests, we had to grind from level 1 to max, we had no chain to follow.

The problem I have with maps is that they’re very linear, much like the gameplay. The path you need to take carved out for you and the game pretty much just carries you along. There’s not much freedom for exploration and this, to me feels very restricting. RO had its share of linear maps but the majority of it felt more open world at least, and a lot of maps like Sphinx and Pyramid were complex at least.

Both games have their strengths and weaknesses, so I agree and disagree with some points e.g. bossing on RO isn’t the same as it was pre-renewal. They’re all camped and soloed by either a Geneticist or Sura, and even Rangers or GXes only take a few seconds to kill an MVP. In cases where soloing is too hard for the average joe (e.g. Endless Tower), it’s certainly a lot more fun and you get to see what bosses can really do on RO and how much more skills they can use compared to ToS’s bosses with like 2-3 different moves and a few stupid traps.

I’ll agree that vending shops on RO made cities livelier, but ever since Ragial and Ragnastats came out, I don’t know of anyone who still walks around checking people’s shops (specifically for iRO) other than new players who aren’t aware of said sites. We at least had a buy shop feature here in ToS back in iCBT (similar to RO’s). Why was that taken out again?

As for your other points like WoE, ToS is still new so we don’t know what else will be added. We’re still anticipating arena, and after that who knows what else will come?

Edit: And oh yea I wanted to add that one of the features I liked in iRO were the bounty boards which encouraged players to go to different maps, so anyone who didn’t wanna just do Gramps or Biolabs could go elsewhere.
