What do you keep in mind when creating a class build?

I haven’t really created a class build before. I know that you should decide what role you would like to play (DPS, Tank, etc…), and how your abilities can contribute to it. But is there anything else to keep in mind? How do you come up with your builds? I do realize it is not necessary to do this to have fun in the game, but I think it’s pretty cool to plan out what abilities your character will have.

Thank you!

Along with the stuff you mentioned, It matters whether you want to do PvP or PvE, since some skills are good in one and bad in the other. If making a warrior, you might want to get a healthy mix of slash, stab and striking skills. Also, you should think about how hard/fast your training might be, it can be a good idea to get some powerful aoe skills early to help out your training.

Usually in MMO’s when I make a build, I try and make it the absolute strongest at max level. So it might be weak for a while but as long as its the strongest at the end of the game, I’m fine.

When you’ve decided on a role you want to play, it really just comes down to personal preferences.

I personally don’t mind playing any role so I’m at a real disadvantage, too many choices, although once someone has chosen which role they wish to play, it’s usually easy to narrow down what builds you want.

So really, it’s all about Role - Personal Preference.

I’ve got a build and role set for each class.

Depends on how you want the class to function and what you’re using it for. Some skills that are useful against AI might not be as useful against human controlled characters and vice versa. You also want to focus on the abilities that compliment your role/playstyle.

After the things you mentioned, it’s pretty much just personal preference, what kind of damage you want to deal, if you want to be ranged or melee, if you want to have a bunch of buffs or big AoEs.

Just pick a tree, check out the classes and then look around for information and repeat if you don’t like what you saw.

I think my answer will be a bit different then the others here.

In my opinion, your first step should be to think about which feels closest to you - is it running around with a two handed sword? Maybe shielding your friends with your shield and be their guardian? How about a mage instead, blasting creatures away? A white mage / healer is always an option aswell. Not only could you heal yourself but also your friends and buff them too. Or maybe the bread and butter of fantasy games - an archer? When you decide which character is closest to you, then you can decide on what you want to do - while your immersion is intact and because of that you’re already enjoying the game.

Afterwards, when you decide on that you have to decide whether you want to be the killer, the healer, the defender or the supporter, but you already covered that yourself.

When that’s done, what you really need to look for is synergies. Having many strong skills will never outclass having many strong skills that complete one another. For example building an archer with a lot of dex and finishing it up with taking 2 ranks of rogue to have evasion effectively increasing your overall evasion by 50%. At that point in the game that 50% will be a rather big number, depending on your equipment. Or you can have a mage that drags enemies to the center of a skill and then having other aoe skills in that area aswell to damage all your enemies at once. Or a mage that links enemies together and increasing the damage at the same time. Or a warrior that increases his capability as he grows in ranks via buffs/secondary effects of skills. Basically you’re looking to empower your overall character every step of the way of building it. Or empower people around you and yourself.

Afterwards you have to read up a bit how gear works in this game. Gear, funnily enough, enables a couple of builds or strengthens others. A good example is viper bow that increases poison damage by quite a bit, making wugushi much stronger. There are many gear dependant builds out there. There’s quite a bit of very strong warrior builds too.

How do I come up with builds? Well, I’m practically never satisfied with the one I have so I’m reading up more and more, either debunking my ideas or strengthening my conviction that it actually might work. There is a limit to the knowledge however, not that much info on the game out just now, there are always unanswered questions. Don’t let it stop you from theorycrafting though, I love that part myself ^^

Hope it helps, though I might of gone off topic here and there. Here’s a mushroom for the fun of it :mushroom:

Basically what you’ve just said is a more in-depth version of what everyone else has said so far.

Since you are talking about builds and hence sought efficiency is implied:

  • Base stats of the class (see stat calculator on tosbase)
  • Increases per levelup of each skill (see skill simulator on tosbase)
Especially things like SP costs, CD’s, damage of skills at lvl1 compared to damage per lvl of already available skills are often overlooked
  • Attributes (!)
Some attributes are so impactful that they are the sole reason to prefer a class or skill over another.
  • Overheat
It’s the amount of time you can spam a skill before it goes on CD. It matters. A lot. A skill like Thrust that may seem weak at first can turn out to be quite strong DPS-wise since it has no CD and no overheat, making it spammable until you run out of SP.
  • Sheer number comparisons between the skill pool of the currently available classes
  • available Weapons and Equip for a class (a DD class can be nice and dandy but if there are no good weapons available for it, gg)
  • doing some calculations for fun helps to put classes into perspective

Thanks everyone, this really helped! Have fun creating builds!

Hey nice post!

Where can I read up on gear that influences skills / builds?
Mushroom to bait out an answer: :mushroom:

Thanks

As for me there are plenty of builds that i’d like to try and knowing that there is high chances of data wipes being made during CBT, I always plan to try out very unusual builds so that when it’s no longer CBT, I’ve already planned out my path

In terms of picking which classes and skills to take, after playing iCBT1 I have seen that there are damage types and each enemy has types that are weak against or not strong against them so this time around I plan to be able to have a balance of these types once I get to Class rank 3 or 4.

Then again, building your character pretty much depends on your preferences i.e. a damage build, a tanker build, a support build, a utility build, hybrid build, unusual build, and etc. lel

Also, if you have friends playing in the upcoming iCBT2, you might wanna ask them too of their builds so that you can build yours differently then compare whether you like your friends’ build better or your own build

Well, there’s this page if you’re up from fishing information from a database I have a feeling is no where near to completed - regardless it’s the only place to try and find something unique until you actually enter the game ^^ http://www.tosbase.com/database/items/

I realistically find that sort of gear at random, reading through stuff or watching vids. There’s a couple I can link you, but just so you know - the ones based on savagery don’t work / don’t work so great anymore. There’s the toy hammer by steparu, it worked great because if I remember correctly - it dealt piercing damage thus activating savagery aswell. Plus sacrament from a scroll of course, it’s hard not to have it its so strong ^^

Then there’s the wugushi and the viper bow I was talking about

I think there were more but there’s nothing that comes to me off the top of my head.

There’s also the mythical sword of Illizia (exaggerated). 2 durability, tons of damage if compared to other swords in its level.

Still, imagine a Squire with max repair wield this sword, what appears in your mind?

Mine? A Massacre

No one found nor carfted this weapon yet, though. So that’s that, maybe Alchemist can craft it with Magnum Opus? Lol, I wish, if that’s certainly the case then there’s 2 slot of my character slot will go to.

Heh, if anyone could make it and have a c2 squire handy that’s 12 durability ^^

Not sure if it’s worth the investment, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone would make a build to make it work though xD

[/quote]@tsigetartseht Ok! That seems like a good idea. To make unorthodox builds that might work, and if they don’t, then the wipe will take care of it! nice

Also I don’t have any friends playing this game ^^;; so if you’d like, you could tell me how your builds work out

Thanks!

@kazammle Sure we can meet some time in-game if you’d like haha though what I’ll main is my melee class then after I’ve reach the end of the line for that, I will shift to wiz in order to try out the weird yet interesting stuff in alchemist

@tsigetartseht That would be cool! My main I think would be a wizard with cryomancer and psychokino. and my alt would be a cleric with bokor. (still thinking about the cleric)

@kazammle Awesome then haha
Guess I’ll just message ya here in the forums once the start of the game is about to happen
I don’t wanna disclose my IGN yet cause some random stranger might rush and steal it from me :frowning:
