UK and European Union - What's going on?

I have no idea what this means, but I’ve been hearing about it since talking to a good friend of mine from the UK ^o.o^

What happened? How does this effect people in the UK?

British people voted to leave the European Union today. And the British pound is at its lowest since 1970-80s (Not sure though correct me if Im wrong)

Britains self-ejection from Europe is the culmination not just of roughly four months of campaigning, but a few decades of latent Euroscepticism, which, through good times and bad, never really went away. Euroscepticism is criticism of, or opposition to, the European Union (EU) and the main source of Euroscepticism has been the notion that integration weakens the nation state, and an apparent desire to slow, halt or reverse integration within the EU. These campaigners have agitated for EU withdrawal ever since the UK joined the common market (somewhere before I was born). And a sizeable proportion of Conservatives have never been comfortable Europeans. And we are full of em.

The outcome (a successful Brexit) has prompted celebrations among said Eurosceptics and sent shockwaves through the global economy. However, young British were and are the ones who wanted a Brexit the least, as it may or may not impact their future. In practical terms, our freedom to move between cities and countries, working and education may be impaired, as some of us felt, culturally, connected to the rest of EU by default. Theres also the serious problem that leaving the EU will allow Britain to regain control of its borders in order to curb soaring immigration and increase security, as some Conservatives are xenophobic.

The pound (our currency, right now 1 BP = 1.37 USD or 1.24 Euro) has fallen to its worst levels (apparently) and as a result our Prime Minister resigned (nothing new here, we have a tradition of resigning Prime Ministers). A new Prime Minister should be in place near the end of year, hopefully by October.

Economically, theres some uncertainty over what will happen now Britain has chose to leave the EU as new trade agreements with the rest of the world will have to be made.

In resume, were living in an island again.
