Tree of Savior Forum

Tree of savior is a casual game. Hakkyu Kim interview:

Yeah, some design choices are pretty bad and particularly in this case I don’t feel compelled to just grind for 0,0001% exp at this point with no available quests.

If you are in no rush to level up and play by doing every single quest (and reading what the npcs say instead of spaming esc or space) staying in each map to explore and get the mob kill count, gathering stuff for each recipe you find and just do all that absent minded just chilling and enjoying the pretty colors and music then it’s pretty casual tbh. But you kinda can only do that the first time around, after you have saved edmundas and rose and melchioras a bunch of times you just want to kill yourself, then doing all the quests becomes hardcore.

Pokemons “hardcore” nature is in relation to PvP combat and thought process with each turn. However basic progression is quite casual, can be done in chunks and is completed in a timely fashion so a player is always understood to be progressing.
Players can also compete to some extent without dipping fully into the depths of its mechanics, given that some statistic advantages can be overcome as a result of simply performing the right move, switch in or simply having a clearly advantageous team against the opponents strat.

Its accessibility is better than ToS can ever dream of at this point.

This is making me real sad. I was expecting this game to be hue, hardcore.
Everything was a lie, this is all a lie, my whole life was a lie…

The silver required to keep characters relevant is not casual design. The millions of exp required to level up does not lend to a casual game.

The game can not really handle the MMO nature with so much lag problems.

Even if you have friends to play with, if you get too far away from each other’s level due to something as basic alas difference in playing time, somebody either needs to stand around and not get killed by red tagged monsters or be bored in an area that gives them no exp.

Maybe at some point it is casual, like level 60 and lower.

Well yeah. But it’s kinda because the game is not doing well. lol
But if casual was the design direction he wanted to go, he did fail horribly.

Once upon a time, in IMC’s headquarters inside a tiny conferece room…

  • OH let us make an awesome video game for casual players!

:ok_hand: Cute.
:skull_crossbones: Friendly.
:skull_crossbones: Casual.

  • You know what’s a great idea for a casual game!? Making so that you need trillions of EXP to reach level cap and you can only reach that by doing 4~6 instances a day until 220 while doing quests and saving cards to use after grinding through a lot of levels!
  • Another great idea is to make it so that you need billions of money to level up attributes! That’d be awesome casual players will love it!
  • AH ah! I got another great idea! Since the dungeons and missions are restricted daily, let’s make so that they can’t queue up in a party with their casual friends! Let them play missions with randoms separately. It’ll improve social interaction!!1

And so the sparkle of a casual game set the project in motion!

I swear bugs and crashes was a core feature this game.
