Took me 227levels to realized I was playing the wrong class.. (Rerolling into Swordsman tree)

Ever since the game’s launch, I have been playing only 1 character and that was Cleric2>Priest2>Monk2… Left the game for a few months and then came back for the event for a class reset into a Cleric2>Priest1>Paladin3>Monk1…

But still, I felt like something is not right. My hotkey is full of support skills and every single time I enter a dungeon. I didn’t feel like I am doing what I thought I should be doing… I felt like a half-arsed character who isn’t good at doing damage nor supporting… I felt that my character is really slow, weak getting easily thrown around knockback and down like a ragdoll…

Today, I finally got fed up of my Pala-Monk and went to check out the swordsman tree simulator. To my surprise, swordsman class have this skill called “Pain Barrier”… Which gives you resistance to one of the most annoying feature to me in the game… At SW3, I can even get perma pain barrier!!!

I immediately felt that Monk should have been in the Swordsman tree…

So here I am, finally decided to create a whole new character.

The mistake I made in this game was going into cleric tree and picking Monk with the wrong mindset. Thinking I could play the character as a offensive character like Monks from other games like Diablo 3.

So well… My new character is gonna be a SW3>Cata3>Dragoon2… I want to be immune to knockbacks and I want to have mobility on my side. I also like the aesthetic of this character looking like Odin with a spear and a horse.

This is probably going to be my new main from now…

I have never played a SW class and really need all the help I can get… What kind of skills setup and stats should I be getting? 50Con and rest into Dex?

Is there an updated and good guide I can follow online for builds and stuff?

Welcome back to the game and welcome to the swordsman tree. sw3 > cata3> goon2 is a generic build that can do most of the game contents; WB, ET, PVP. Be warned, swordsman class needs heavy investment to be competitive.

essential skills:

the link above will lead you to essential skill breakdown on your build. Remaining skill points can be used depending on personal preference.

50 CON rest DEX is a decent distribution. IMO, add more CON if you want to PvP, there’s alot of fast kills in there since the release of R8 and 315 red weapons.

Hi thank you for the skill recommendation!

For SW3: Does double slash really need to be 5/5? I was thinking 3/5 and 15/15 concentrate… Will I even be using double slash when I get to rank8?

For Cata3: Is steed charge so bad that it deserve 0 points?

For Dragoon2: Should I get Gae Bulg to 5 for the attribute or even 10 for increased debuff duration? Maybe leave 0 in Dragoon tooth and Soar? Since the damage is pretty bad… I can save remaining points for Dragoon3 to auto max dethrone when R9 is out.

Took me two 280 chars to realize the classes are pretty useless … so, back to hating the game again

I’m 209 Fencer right now and I know how you feel.
The difference is that I just can’t decide which sword build to make.

For SW3: Won’t make a big difference if you do it. But until you get rank 5 Double Slash é really useful.

For Cata3: It’s horrible. Between pressing the hotkey and the skill animation there is a huge delay.

For Dragoon2: The attribute is pretty useless. Don’t even consider it.

Monk is a short range physical class, instead of decreasing the CD of useless skills and giving slight touches to the rest of his skills, give them a skill with the pain barrier effect similar to the swordmans, then monk will have something that Oracle, Plage Doctor, Miko, Kabbalist dont have and then the class gonna worth something.

After playing more SW today, I don’t think I can ever go back to playing my Paladin3Monk1 again…

Sprinting makes everything easier… The self-buff animations are short and fast. (Concentrate, pain barrier, restrain) Casting all my buffs on cleric take a full 7 - 10 seconds… (Divine might, restoration, resist elements, monstrance, safety zone, blessing… barrier… heal…)

Well, I do miss not having heal10. But with mobility from sprinting, I can kite enemies and easily dodge those telegraphed and aoe attacks… Things should be even better once I get to cata3.

I definitely feel like I have been playing the wrong class all along. When I played this game at launch, I only picked Monk because I saw gameplay videos of how awesome Monks looked with energy blast and fist punching style… But all just smokes and mirrors… I doubt IMC will do anything to make Monk a true DPS class matching the power of DPS classes from wizards/archers/sworsdman since after all, Monk is still part of the cleric(supprot) tree in the end…

Check out the recent balance talks on the announcement. Every single monk skill except temper skin is getting buffed 1 way or the other.

Will the monk be as viable in the DPS department as the other cleric classes? We don’t lnow yet.

That would be fine too, double slash is a nice filler skill.

Steed charge is tricky to use, has charging time and needs positioning. but you may put 1 point for knockback utility.

Dragoon tooth and soar are multihit skills, they will scale well with weapon damage late game, even if the skill damage is low. It’s highly advisable to have them.

tbh, I have no idea what Gae Bulg does, @ZeroFoxGiven might be able to give you an idea, he knows alot dragoons.

Thanks! In that case doesn’t Dragon Tooth and Soar need more pts than just… 1?

For double slash vs concentrate, I personally believe concentrate is worth maxing 15/15 compared to double slash 5/5…

Double slash at lvl2 = 322 damage
Double slash at lvl5 = 530 damage

concentrate lvl 12 = 24hits
concentrate lvl 15 = 30hits (and more damage, it even scales with dex and str!)

Oh yes, and should I going with red or yellow gems?

And 240 Levels later as Catagoon you will feel exactly the same again. Deals no real dmg, magic monsters will destroy you and your support skills are also non-existend.
In the end you get Dragoon 2 which feels halfway decent first until you realize that your dmg isn’t even close to what Inquisitor brings and you have no support execept long CD Restraint and Serpentine buff.

Oh ya, swordsman is hard mode but i like it.

I have put one because it’s upon your preference which one to max or balance out the remaining points, personally I maxed dragonsoar, since I rarely used fully charged dragoon tooth.

As for double slash, you can actually just put 1 for it, what we’re up to is the spammable 2 hits.

Is it worth taking a point out of earth wave or doom spike to put 1 into steed charge? I think it has been buffed now? It got 300% damage now.

Somehow it feels that Lancer is the natural advancement for Cataphract, though…

Haha, just like how inquisitors feel like the natural advancement to paladins…

But yeah, I am still KINDA undecided whether to grab lancer or dragoon yet. But dragoon’s skills feel more epic? Especially dethrone.

Nothing special

YOU JUST GOT IMC’ED

I prefer Earth Wave to be maxed because it’s strike damage and good against plate, so yeah maybe take a point from doom spike, catagoon have many prierce damage already.

I totally agree, Monks need a skill or attribute (maybe at C2 or C3) which allows them to not be knocked around… like we need to stay close to continue dmg not like Diev (put down owl which cannot be knocked away now) or Krivis or PD , who can just apply their skills then walk away or be knocked away…

Like monk is a melee character and getting knocked around really stumps our (bad) dps … :S like i really want to play my monk but it’s just so…not worth investing… :frowning:

They could just rework Golden Bell Shield or Iron Skin like that, though, and make them counter skills you can trigger to evade/counter damage& negative effects. Basically, a real Buddhistic/Daoistic monk that knows basic fighting techniques is a master of deflection and exposing& using the enemies weaknesses to his benefit.

Why do you need to wait for some CD to run up just to counter/avoid some physical skill? That’s crazy, about as crazy as the fact that you can’t evade a ground slam by jumping in the air. Jumping characters should be counting as flying, same as that levitating Featherfoot, but oh well. Jumping is just to avoid traps after all…

I believe it would be fair enough to enable Monk to basically rotate these two skills to avoid damage and/or reflect/deflect the inflicted damage while resisting knockdown/knockback effects. If e.g. Iron Skin got a rework to last for 0,2 seconds per skilllevel and have a 5-6 seconds CD time,
it would have a large impact on the popularity of Monk I bet.

Basically a C1 Monk could save all Clerics the trouble of getting knocked back/knocked down by those non-magic AoE skills that boss monsters like to spam all day long once Safety Zone is down, or could even provide an alternative to the obligatory Cleric C2 for the Safety Zone attribute…

Btw, where did you put your points to have Double Slash at lvl 3 or 5?Oo
With Concentrate, Pain Barrier and Restrain maxed, there are 5 skillpoints left. 3 should go into Bash for the knockdown attribute, 1 into Pommel Beat and 1 into Double Slash.
