Terrible day on ToS 2/20/2017

Hey all,

I’m a player who played pretty hardcore for the first two months of release, took a break, and came back roughly a month ago to see the changes. Things have been going good, but I had a pretty bad experience today that I want to share with the community. I just want to preface this by saying that I’ve never had much lag or DC issues in this game (outside of the general poor performance of the game engine which we all know as normal) in my 500 hours or so of playing it.

Today on Saalus, my game was performing terribly, and I DC’d repeatedly, and when i logged back in I my lodge was completely different and my characters were in all different places. Thankfully I was able to get back in and fight through lag to get my cube.

Next I did Saulai mission runs, I queued up 3 times, waiting 5-10 minutes for each group, only to be disconnected at the end or sent back to the malformed lodge, and got commander load fail upon trying to reenter. I later noticed that one of my dungeon runs had been used up as a result of this. I’ve heard people complain of this, but it had never happened to me ( I thought their system was at fault or something local).

Then, I saw a shout for 240 dun and joined the party on my 271 DRG. They were level 240, (too low to auto match with me) so we tried to just enter the dungeon, but we couldn’t, because of that stupid error message you get when server capacity is at max. I couldn’t auto match with them either, and so the 5 of us stood around trying to figure out how to get into the dungeon to play together. After 10 minutes we just gave up and I decided to just solo the 130 dun and try to get my peta. Of course, I couldn’t enter that dungeon either, due to this server capacity error. I then decided to just to give up for the today, and forfeit my dailies.

My point in writing this is to highlight that this game is full of bugs, and when I see the patch notes for the maintenance tonight list just one bug fix, I am extremely disheartened.

Despite this games many positive qualities (style, music, interesting gameplay / class mechanics) I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this game in its current state. Most sane, modern gamers would never put up with these issues, and while I hope they get corrected sooner rather than later, I feel that these issues are so deeply rooted in the game engine that they can’t be addressed without SIGNIFICANT investment of resources by the developers.

Anyway, I’m not giving up on it, and I’m hoping that the game improves in the future.

See you in the tree.

I didn’t say I quit. I’m still gonna play.

I just wanted to mention some issues I’m encountering as feedback to the devs (though I’m sure they’re already aware of all of these problems)

I also understand that with most modern software you can patch things and roll out updates easily, so even if I did quit, I would probably return after some time to check on things and play some more.

I’m curious if there’s any software engineers on here who has worked in game development (MMORPGs in particular) who could talk about what they are seeing in ToS compared to the other MMORPGs on the market, in terms of the underlying system and framework. I’m specifically curious about it’s potential for improvement, and what we might see in the future? Or do you think these issues will persist into 2018?

For example, with FFXIV 1.0, the underlying framework and network environment was so poor that Square Enix decided to scrap the entire project and rebuild the whole thing. I’m sure they were able to use and salvage some assets but I think they really gutted the entire thing, and I’m sure they spent an astronomical amount of money to do so.

i had no problems in the past 2 months past 3-4 VGA errors the first 2 weeks of january and 1 saalus dc

Even the author of Melia (an open-source MMORPG server software for iTOS version AKA the closest thing that would’ve allowed people to start running their own private/local servers) seems to have abandoned ship.

He even already removed the Melia section from their forums. http://aura-project.org/forum/

IMO the only saving grace for this game is either a miracle in IMC’s end, or for them to sell this to a better dev/publisher.

Add-on and Hack guys(not going to mention names) has some idea on how the ToS game structure works.
One guy tried to help, but IMC has their ‘standards’, thus was ignored.
The other guy played bad cop/anti-hero thus got treated by IMC as a rouge vigilante.

Both of em admit ‘ToS might as well have one of the worse mess in game coding they’ve seen’(in comparison to other krMMOs).

Both have also already left the game for a long time now, but they’ve also left contributions(?) to the game which is still widely used(lol) by most players.

and still no GM response in forum, they are lazy as hell

They are scared of people holding forks and torches.

Also it’s funny how you see code getting restored in one patch to be fixed again later. (Such as when GvG rankings started working for one week, then removed again with the same old changes in code.)

@johnmerriam90 As bad as it seems, this is a thing my team do before any Earth Tower run: Restart ToS client. Before the first run we all restart our client if we’re with it open for too much time during the day, it does helps on reducing overall lag and reduces risk of crashing during runs. Quickfix? Yes, but better than losing runs, you only use 1-5 minutes to restart your client.

You’ve just summarized exactly how I feel right now, I am also waiting to see if there will be any major fix/update to bring us joy back (and silute back to south america with a decent server) I too feel disheartened and I’ve stopped logging 1 week ago, I am waiting and praying to see the game to be finally playable and decent…
