[Suggestions] Future Casual Content

Hi there!

Now I’ve only played the CBT and have no idea what your plans are for the future. These are just a collection of ideas that me and other fans have talked about regarding ToS. They are in no way urgent and you could maybe add them in to future patches and expansions.

As it stands as of writing, iCBT1, there’s nothing else to do in the game but grind. Crafting is fun for those into it, which I am, but aside from that one activity and grinding, there is not much else to do. There’s a ton of potential for a beautifully designed game like ToS, and here are some fan ideas, for casual gameplay, for your future consideration:

  • Musical Instruments - Let us upload MML files and play them in-game using instruments.
  • Housing - Allow us to design our barracks, at least. That Banquet Hall could sure use some touching up.
  • Fishing - A small minigame to sink some time in between grinds.
  • Cooking - Could be tied to the Squire class and their buff table. Should be fun.
  • Improved Card Game - The card game is fun, I admit, but it mostly relies on luck and not player skill. RNGesus isn’t always kind.
  • Daily Quests - This could be a bounty board we could check out, unique to each town, where we could just log in on a busy day, craft an item, or hunt a few mobs, or gather a few ingredients, take our reward, then go back to the real world. This is great for busy people or for off days. Log in, quickie quest, log out.
  • Pets - maybe we could have cosmetic pets that don’t take up Barracks space? Non combat, just something to drag around and interact with. That would be really nice.
  • Facial expression emotes that can be used in skill slots or set as shortcuts. Similar to PSO2’s macro system where you can just pop up auto chat bubbles mid-fight.

These are the ones I can remember from the top of my head. If anyone gives valid and viable ideas in this thread, I might add them.

I hope you’re reading, IMC. And thank you for this wonderful game!

I agree with you on all points except on Daily Quests.
Daily quests are just too likely to break the MMO experience unless their rewards are really bad, in which case they would just be pointless.
It forces people to go do it everyday or “stay behind”, making the game incredibly stressful instead of just letting you go at your own pace. Of course again that depends on how good the rewards are.
Especially if there are multiple Daily Quests that take time to do all of them everyday (looking at you Aura Kingdom) making you log everyday, play 4 hours worth of daily quests, log out, log in the next day, play another 4 hours worth of daily quests, log out, and so on, and so on; and doing anything else only means that you are missing out on valuable rewards essentially “forcing” you into a situation of “have fun or play optimally”.

Everything else I agree with, though. Especially fishing. I love fishing.

The daily quests would not have to be something rp breaking. You could have an adventurers or mercenary guild that posts subjugation requests, or requests to help a citizen build a house, or a request to clean up the environment, etc. tt.

Those could be randomly generated each day and accessible via guild representatives in a mercenary guild hall or some such.

The logic would be that ordinary townsfolk would pay you to carry out these chores in exchange for money. You could even implement guild ranks to explain why, as you level, the requests become more and more challenging.

As the requests are not state sanctioned and the guild takes a cut, the rewards would be smaller, but they could also hide a few chain requests or cashcows inbetween for those people that love grinding this way.

The game could keep track of what kind of requests you tend to fill and prioritize those over others when generating your quests. It’s not like this is 2000 when PCs and servers had no capacity for a few databases and calculations of this sort and everybody had to get the same deal by necessity.

Maybe add a title, or a unique costume for those that complete a lot of those challenges, as well.

There is a lot that can be done with such quests if the developers are interested to work at it, it can become just another nice opportunity ingame instead of a dull time waster.

Personally, I’m fine either way, but I’d be delighted to see a game pull something like this off - a way for players to just play an adventurer or mercenary instead of the goddess sent champions of humanity destined to smite evil.

As a casual player, i dont mind stay “behind” of the hardcore ones that rush their lives to get on the end game without even enjoying the game, i dont mind dailies, i barely do them too, but if its to earn some extra cash to buy materials/gear/pots i think its something good, btw, on the beta i didnt know there was 2 daily npcs in mine village, it was nice to find out it helped my friend reach from level 12 to 22 doing all 5 and 10 times (both npcs give different amount of times to do the same daily), as me i was on level 33, i got 2 class levels and a level.

I thought Side quest and main quest were enough for casual people.

If they add loads of sidequests, but even so, only being around hunting and hunting on endgame (i mean maximum level) get boring as hell, so i guess dailies could halve a bit that boredon, not everyone want to pvp or do guild/clan wars (or w/e will be called), and i think its good for the game to have a bunch of options to keep the players hooked.

I dont know about events, what kind of will have, if will have, so untill OBT at least we can only wait and see, if they take some of the suggestions on the forum (wich i saw some pretty nice) the game will be fantastic for both casual and hardcore gamers.

I really love that idea! Really really. But I can see people abusing it by playing nonstop rickroll in Klaipeda, even though that wouldn’t be such an issue if there is a “mute” option. I’d prefer keeping this feature for a particular class such as Pied Piper (or any other instrument playing class).

It will be possible. I think there is even an official statement about that !

Saying that people that don’t do dailies “fall behind” may be a fallacy anyways - who says that running all over the map to hunt down whatever mob is “it” that day is necessarily more rewarding than advancing the main quest or grinding at the appropriate level with your buddies?

It can simply be a way to level for those people that can’t easily justify spending all day in a spot killing random mobs over and over without a quest to go along with it.

@nando20xx I didn’t mean stay behind other players, but more as in staying behind the EXP you should be having right now if you didn’t skip the quest for X or Y reason. It is frustrating for a lot of people and creates stress.

@tomeck_99_de It’s not a fallacy; there’s a reason why I said “likely”. They CAN be done correctly, but it’s unlikely. To be done correctly they would need to still give relevant rewards to be attractive to people who can’t take the time to grind, but still not rewarding enough to make people feel like they are forced to do it to progress as fast as possible.

I have never played a single game where daily quests are not just an annoying thing to do, I would be surprised if they can pull that off so I’d rather them not try to go that route at all.

As a dad, full time worker, and student, its difficult to play mmos 8-12 hours a day, grinding to keep up with the competition. Logging in for 2 hours a day is sometimes not enough. Daily quests would actually be beneficial for players like myself. Login for 1-2 hours a day, and actually have a meaningful experience. There would always be a sense of progression, and logging in for 1-2 hours a day wouldnt seem pointless.

The suggested benefit of the mini quests should be along the lines of small rewards that help players to maximize on their grind time. FOR EXAMPLE:

Successfully performing todays mini-quest rewards said player with an item thats bosts exp for 1 hour. And you can only obtain 2-3 of those each day. For the hardcore players, they still reap those benefits, but as they continue to play beyond the 2-3 hours, they still stay ahead of the mold for playing 5-6 hours a day.

Another example… By completing today’s mini-quest player receives a set amount of currency that they can use to buy healing potions, weapons and gears… So as time goes on, even the casual player can reasonably strive for a certain goal to obtain that coveted piece of gear of their choice. But for the hardcore grinders, they too can push forward and continue to collect that currency, but at a much lower rate while grinding away.

In other words, daily quests are meant to help the casual player maximize on their 1-2 hours of gameplay while still being responsible human beings… And for the hardcore players, they too will experience the same benefits, but as they continue to play, they can go beyond the benefits of the miniquests and become elite players.

I dont see much of the meaning in the stress you talk about, but im not others so i cant say that for sure, but to not cause problems, lets just say, dailies for who is at endgame, i mean, when you hit there, the dailies unlock, or when you finish your main quests, you unlock the dailies, those dailies give money and items, be it gear or costumes or companions or w/e we can figure out later on.

Btw a bit off-topic here, Narue is your name or its from Narue no Sekai?

Did anyone enter the building to the left in Fedimian? I can’t remember the name of the building/room but I feel like it was going to have something to do with it being a future hub for quests or something. Maybe I was just really out of sleep that night though…

Anyone that play the kr beta know what that place really was?

I think there are tons of mini-games they could come up with that would add to the game…
Maybe something like companion races you can bet on. haha. (I don’t know what all would factor into a speedy companion though unless they made it straight up rng – which would still be cute.)

Could be like Gold Saucer on FFXIV, if it is, that would be awesome.

I think it was Mercenary Headquarters or something like that. I got that vibe from there too, I’m looking forward to it!

I as well agree with everything you are proposing, great ideas - except for daily quests. I really do not like daily quests, and don’t think they add much to a game besides a boosted way to progress ( typically making up for other badly designed ways to progress that are inferior ), and a task list that you need to do every day in order to keep progressing.

Daily quests destroy a good portion of open world exploration and freedom. Someone may say “well they are just optional, you don’t have to do them”, but if they are the most optimal way to progress, and give rewards ( which they must in order to exist and be worthwhile ) then you will be reluctant to dismiss them. The part of this game that I like is the experimentation that comes from exploring class routes, finding optimal areas to grind / farm items ( figuring it out yourself ), and the encouraged social interactions that come from the long journey and design of the game ( bonfires, class synergies, party exp bonuses, blue mob hunting ).

From my experience in other MMO’s, having daily quests that you form random groups to run through every day does not promote a good social environment. You form a group simply to be guided by the game through a set of tasks, and then disperse that group. It also makes the game more task oriented, which is the problem with quests in the first place. You don’t do things because you’re inspired to, or because you want something and you’ve explored and found a way to get it. You do things because the game presented an easy way to progress, and you’re simply following along in order to get it done.

Having dailies also means that you won’t want to take, say, a 2 day break from the game, and then play for a solid 10 hours on the weekend. You feel pressured to log in every day, complete a list of tasks, and then be done because anything else you’re going to do is going to be less optimal than that task list, until tomorrow when you can complete another task list.

A fishing minigame would kinda be awesome.

I think we do have these but they feel incomplete and not very expressive for common use.

They made Maplestory’s social experience quite a lot better for me. I think it’d work here, too.
(here, it would work more like PSO2’s macro system where you can just pop up auto chat bubbles mid-fight)

They could work if the rewards are less optimal than grinding. They should cater to players like @Nnamdeezel above.

They should mostly be solo affairs with prizes that would be rewarding to people who only play a game for a few hours a day, but grinding or questing the usual way should be more optimal to regular players.

Added it to the list. Great idea! I just saw that in a PSO2 video yesterday and I don’t know why I didn’t think of ToS immediately. This would be very useful!
