[Suggestion] Stay Away from Linear Progress

Well, quoting myself here (I posted this somewhere above) -
First impression is way too important, and even if later on (level 100+? 200+?) there’s more freedom in choosing what to do, it’s crucial to show that to new players as well
Around level 70 is better than level 100 which I was guessing, but with current iCBT EXP rates, IMC has already ruined the first impression for pretty much all people that haven’t spent massive amounts of time in RO1 and are not turned off by grind walls that easily. Which is a shame, IMO.

Facepalm

People wanting to turn Tree of Savior into WoW which is already bleeding subs. Others wanting it to be more like GuildWars 2 which failed to impress a lot after launch.

I’m not saying some of these suggestions are bad ideas, but acting like ToS will fail hard because of it is silly.

FFXIV is one of the big boys on the block now, and is extremely linear. Have you done the Main Story Quest in FFXIV? Talk about a bore! Also, grinding in that game for other classes you go to the same areas! Aleport - Quarrymill - Costa Del Sol - Camp Dragon Head - North Thanalan. Same mobs over and over again, no different story progression, etc. This is one of the most popular MMOs out right now.

GW2 had a branching story, yet that is not what many MMO players even cared about. I think if you asked many GW2 why they played GW2, it wasn’t because “Branching Story”, it eventually funnels into linear story anyway.

All the suggestions here are generic, seen before things in MMOs. Come on, how about giving them some NEW ideas? People want NEW ideas in the MMO industry that can be executed well.

It’s sorta true in that you can still grind certain zone beyond its own level, simply because the next zone that’s easy for you to grind in is a bit too high for you still.

For example, as a Priest, Tenet Chapel is VERY easy for me (Sacrament = everything takes massive damage) and I can easily keep grinding there until beyond 50.

Heck even now at lv 55, with the increased pace I can kill things, even at about half exp that I got back when I was early 40s, I can probably still gain more exp/loot over time than if I kill some of the things in my level. (that said the monsters near my level would have higher quality loot so there’s that)

More starting areas would really help later on when people make alts. The class system heavily encourages alts, but imaging buying the big fancy barracks and having to do the same starting zone over that many times. If they don’t have time to do it for release, new starting zones with very different atmospheres would be a great feature to announce as a plan for a patch.

Between alt spam and first impressions, starting zones are far more heavily used than later ones. Only a fraction of “let’s try this on a whim” alts are going to get over 70.

Activate the goddess statues for all the starting spots when you activate the first one, of course. It’s like the second thing you see after making a character.

Even when you see this “branched” map. Its clearly that even on 100+ its linear. The maps are meant for that kind of player to be there. Its totally non sense this way,
A “x or y” player has to lvl up there. So you would only encounter “x or y” class there…

I’ll also add that WildStar had most of the things you mention, yet failed miserably.

Its not too bad Ro1 map were pretty far away too and they still worked fine but I agree towns would be better improvements…

I would still play RO1 if the game wasnt so old. The engine doesnt work anymore. But the game is still alive after so many years.
The game is just good.

But ToS. Oh gee. I’ve tried to play for 5h. I cant. Just cant. Boring as hell.

FF online is only popular because of its name. People will buy the game even if the huds are terrible and the gaming phase is linear.

But they had different town/cities themes to explore…
Juno, Prontera, Payon etc.

Same here the linear maps the lack of sidequests just runs it for me. Tried starting different class to try them out just got bored fast. Also the main quest like go to this npc kill a bunch of mobs always the same thing. Then you need to grind 5 lvls with no quests and this low exp rate.

This is just another game for mmohut.com
nothing special.

I think you are judging this game too early and u played this game 5 hours… You Wouldn’t even Like Rangarok 1 when it was in Closed beta phase… Ro1 closed was smaller and emptier than Tree of savior… Im just saying that you should jugde this game when its done because lots of things can change in future and all of the content arent here… I respect your opinion. about CBT and there is nothing to wrong criticized it.

Ragnarok renewal is one of the worst MMO I have played… So I do not recommend returning.

I thought people didn’t want quest? I always hear negative thing when people are talking about generic mmo quest grinding… They indeed hided most of the quest in CBT…

I simply cant play it more. Lags hard. Horrible controls. All players killing mobs on the same place. It isn’t my game. I’m here because i really liked this community.
And yes. Renewal is a true piece of pure camel dung.
But before that, the pservers aren’t renewal.
Many people, just like me, thought this was going to be the sucessor of RO. But its not.

I’m the one who made this thread but I’m not judging the game that hard. Give it a chance, that’s what Betas are for, gathering feedback and opinions and adjusting before launch.

I’m a very casual player, on a rock somewhere in the middle of the pacific, yet I’m in the top 500, so the lag and controls can’t be that horrible.

Give it a chance on launch. I have faith in IMC.

Can’t comment on RO since I didn’t play it for more than a week.

Yes, please! This is my biggest complaint with the game so far. In a game where class diversity is supposed to be one of its selling points, I am going to want to make a lot of characters instead of sticking to just one. Going through the exact same content over and over with each character is just boring.

It doesn’t have to be an issue for people who start in different areas and want to play together. Just make it possible to teleport between newbie areas easily. I’m not necessarily asking for different towns, just more diverse maps.

I agree with the sentiment that this isn’t RO and shouldn’t try to be RO, but it doesn’t have to be in order to have different maps to choose from.

Saying ff 14 is popular because of its name is not even close to true. You must have forgotten its initial bomb of a release. People genuinely enjoy the game and some folks seem to think that a somewhat linear game is inherently bad across genres for some reason but it’s really not as long as the ride is fun.

I feel very relieved hearing this. This is perhaps my biggest concern for this game.

Lack of leveling option is a big problem. However, if that’s all you care to test in an MMO…

Take a deeper look and you’ll find a lot of game design that are well thought out. The game mechanics department, art and audio department definitely gets an A+ from me.
