Some truths about game industry and why IMC failed

Just a question: How long does the game have to be up to be considered a surviving mmo in your opinion? 4+ years?

So you admit that they’re currently improving the game then to an acceptable state. If they were just trying to ‘maximize profit with minimum effort’, they would have just thrown out unlimited buyable TP from the beginning with a bunch of costumes ported over from kToS to here to lure people in, and only fixed issues that directly kept people from playing the game or interfered with their profits, and not bothered with developing the game any further with skill balancing or new maps/modes since those time/resources could be used on a different game (Wolfknights) to do the same thing.

So are you sure this is a cash grab? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

the hell are you imagining here? RO had a period where it seemed like it was just going to be in “eternal Beta” where it went on for over a year.

…using a game engine that was originally developed for Granado Espada, in 2006.
real solid, there.

yes, that’s totally the plan, sink millions of dollars, and several years of development into a game, just so they can scam us out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in return then pack up shop.

02 in korea (aug 31, according to google)… open betas started in like 03 in north america, i think.

also noticing that your “almost a year” is more like -half- a year… and on top of that, we’re months behind the current patch version in korea, because of patch translation, as well as getting finalized patches only, instead of “we hope this works” patches which then break then game entirely lol oops.

Sure, because targetting specific audiances (the RO nostalgics and the anime-lovers) and “copy-pasting” an entire game is like, totally the same thing right ?

Listen to yourself…

I don’t really understand what you’re attempting to imply with this? Because old engines don’t necessarily mean that the game is going to run like turds in 10 years, technology does not age like this and what you are saying is just flat out moot.
And Granado Espada had multicore support! ToS on the other hand does not.

Err… I think you replied to the wrong comment =3=

Author definitely has a point. Still, i believe this game will actually survive through all the hardships. Idk, I just have a feeling.

Ok first to address two things I saw said before I weigh in.

  1. The CM was not fired, Julie quit because this job was too much work to keep up with, as was clarified in another thread by the lead developer.

  2. Saying IMC is charging double the value of a AAA title with the Veteran pack makes no sense. AAA games are not $17.50.

Alright now to the topic.

This thread is all over the place on the standard of game development. Tbh I think it is foolish to try saying that games were more polished 15 years ago or that they are more polished these days as well. I dont believe that standard has really changed. There are a few companies that are known for well polished and bug free games but that has always been their reputation.

It has NEVER been reasonable to compare Blizzard to other companies. And right now it is even less so to compare to Riot. Blizzard has a cult following that guarantees their success no matter how shitty the game they put out. Which because they typically don’t this only becomes a valid point because of D3’s initial release. Garbage enough of a game that their lead producer had to step down even though it still had record breaking sales.

As for Riot. Riot is a garbage company through and through. Their success with League comes down to when the game was released and the payment model it used. There was no MOBA market. There was a highly successful custom mod for a blizzard game called DOTA that sold copies of wc3 by itself. This created an opening for a new market and there were only 2 companies looking to take advantage of it. S2games with Heroes of Newerth and Riot with League of Legends. At the same time the whole free to play idea was going viral and anything advertised as free to play was getting a lot of attention. While Heroes of Newerth was a far better game, it also was buy to play for $30 so it failed where it could have become the League of Legends we have today. No I’m not saying league is a ■■■■ game now. But it really was back then. This is a great example of how a crappy company can still make a good game if they have a bottomless pit of money and the resources that come with it.

Extra Credits does have some good content. But most of it speculative and can’t be used as a standard to how every game company is run. It isn’t public knowledge as to all the problems a company runs into or the steps taken to remedy them.

That being said. IMC has surely made more than a few mistakes with Tree of Savior. I think they pushed this game out a little too quickly. They also took on too much responsibility by hosting multiple regions like this. It may be better for them and maybe even better for the players too in the long run. But for now these are the complications we have to deal with.

It comes down to whether you feel like its all worth your time and patience or not. No this game is not a failure and it isn’t enough of a crap fest to shut down any time soon either.

I personally am still having fun and i’m not withholding my money because I want it to succeed.

ToS uses as much as 40% of my quad core system. this is at least dual-core support.

and it requires MUCH more complicated programming to write open-ended programming to allow for future expansions that it does to write fixed coding for what’s currently available. an old engine doesn’t necessarily mean it will run like turd on a new system… but at the same time, there’s no guarantee it will be able to use all the power of the new system either.

lol, way back when, i tried HoN and discovered that i didn’t really like it. so i looked at other MOBAs in the market. i realized that i had a very difficult time telling the difference between LoL and HoN just from the screenshots. heh.

but yea, lmao… comparing Blizzard to even other AAA companies is usually a bad match. D3 was, by technical measurements, an excellent game when released. it just had some very awkward gameplay/story management decisions that really crippled the overall interest.

League has done 2 graphic overhauls iirc since it came out. Only with the most recent did it finally have something on par with HoN. HoN was definitely not a game for everyone as it was very fast paced, even faster than league. It also was feature complete with a match making system (although buggy), built-in voice chat, a really well thought out replay system, amongst other things League did not have. League still doesn’t have match recording by replays and the client has really been years overdo for an overhaul to fix design flaws and to allow more features that people want.

So yeah back then HoN was a much better game. But no one was willing to pay $30 to try this new genre they had never seen before.

basically that, yes.

You failed to answer any of the questions raised up by your “analysis”.
Not a good way to “show off”.
