Tree of Savior Forum

So, IMC, you want this game to grow, right?

By now, I have played Tree of Savior for 2 months. It has become the only game I have played ever since I picked it up because I have thoroughly enjoyed it and it feels fresh. It feels full of potential. It feels like it could be something big.

BUT. That’s where it stops.
I’ve had the thought of making this post ever since the Penguin mount came out.
Sure, it’s a cute penguin that any class, not just riding classes, can mount. Except there’s a catch: It is an item you PAY for out of your wallet, cannot be bought through in game currency in any shape or form, and gives an advantage over other players: a defense boost.

While it may not seem like a big deal, this is already a step in the wrong direction.
The path every modern Eastern MMO seems to take at some point or another: Implement pay to win advantages for people who pour their money into the game. And what about the people who are young teenagers without a big wallet? Well, they have to just deal with it. Right?

I’m not gonna lie, I have spent my fair share of money on this game, to buy the cute outfits released for this game. That is something perfectly fine to release in the game, they have no benefit and are there to make you look good, which isn’t completely necessary because there are some class costumes that are absolutely beautiful (like the Corsair costume, Fencer costume, among others), but I have chosen to do this to help out IMC in exchange for something that feels fair, because it will not make me better at TBL than someone who does not have this costume.
However, I have not invested in the Penguin mount. I have a Schwarzer Reiter and a Cata Dragoon, but it has not come to my mind to buy it because it simply is not fair to have an advantage over everyone else just because I paid money.

IMC, all I really want is for you to not follow that path you clearly dared step on in this instance. You can pump out a ton of cosmetic stuff and that’s great, it will be appreciated for the community to have more ways to make their character unique. And I love how tokens, almost an essential item in this game, can be bought not only with money but also with silver, which isn’t a grindfest to earn if you’re enjoying your dungeons.

It isn’t too late to make this game grow. It isn’t dead. However, considering how many expectations have been crushed by the pay to win models of modern MMOs, you have to make smart decisions. Show the community you care about them, show them the game is fair for all players, and show them you’re not here for just the money, but also for a passion to bring a community together and have them enjoy your game along with you.

This, and of course, fixing the absolutely insane amount of bugs, is a good start. I hope to see this game grow and raise the bar once again that classic MMOs like World of Warcraft set.

Sincerely,
A pretty huge fan of your game

I forgot to put it in, but even without following this path, you can make big money too!

If you notice big PC games out there, they all do not have this problem. Games such as League of Legends, DOTA 2, Overwatch, among others, that are MASSIVE and manage to make revenue off of nothing but cosmetic items.

It may take a long time to become big this way, but slow and steady wins the race, IMC!

Maybe if they made Penguin eggs sell-able via AH/market like how they did with tokens, this wouldn’t have been a problem.

Either way — players buying direct from TP shop, or players buying from other players who bought it originally at TP shop — IMC gets paid.

Guess we’re just left wondering why.

Or maybe they’ll have some events in the future where you can stack as much event TP to the point where you can afford one egg.

Event TP rolls around every full moon, and it’s often like 20 TP
It is appreciated, but most of the time I’ve used it to stretch it with free daily TP to buy small stuff like megaphones or soul stones. That’s what it’s intended for

If they made penguins be able to be sold in the market, it would definitely cut down on the problem for sure, but it still means people need to buy this specific mount to be above people who use other mounts. It should just have the same stats as other mounts, but redistributed in a unique way to make crit mounts, or tanky mounts, if they so wish, but balanced to be competitive and counter each other

Read about half of this and stopped.

The penguin is in no significant way giving people an advantage. Slight move speed and a defense buff that isn’t anything remarkable. Characters that aren’t mounted attack classes dismount when attacking, the original ones still have much more of an advantage in terms of speed and mount bonuses.

I agree more than tokens and hats should be sellable in the Market, but there’s nothing wrong with the penguin other than its price tag. Which is the only reason I haven’t gotten one.

While the defense buff is tiny, it is there. While TBL fights are one sided most of the time, in a competitive environment this mount would become the norm for any mounted class who just might have that 30 defense be the difference between winning a fight and losing it. It can have an impact caused simply by the fact that you spent money.

While of course, it’s negligible, it’s a small step towards pay to win and IMC has to know before it even has a chance to spread

I think nothing’s really F2P when it comes to modern MMORPGs these days.

MOBAs can get away with it due to the sheer number of players they have that even a small percentage of them paying for cosmetics is more than enough to compensate for upkeep and to fund future development while still raking profits for investors.

I’d like to think of the event TPs as discounts or freebies.

That is actually what a lot of players before (mostly the pure F2P-ers) said about tokens.

I guess it’s just a matter of IMC needing to breakeven at the least. Low population F2P game = even lower # of paying players.

You’re wording it as if they don’t know they’re doing this. I can assure you they know, and will keep this up because people are willing to buy things this way, at these prices. While their primary goal should be our happiness as players, it simply goes hand in hand with them making money. They’re simply attempting to follow the trend that makes them the most.

When you open a restaurant, or almost any business, you start at a deficit. You have invested more money than you’ve earned out of it, and you only break even at some point down the road when you’ve shown you can make smart business decisions.

This is no different for a game. Tree of Savior took money to develop, and IMC should have expected that they would not make much money at the start, and needed to have funds to pay their employees. All businesses are about patience and making the right decisions, and going pay to win is never welcome in Western audiences

Btw, I have talked to my guild before about how competitive this game is, AKA the lack of true competition due to the lack of necessary balance.
This is also essential for the growth of this game.

If IMC notices this, I will also be making a post about that with our collective thoughts on making this game more competitive and fun
