I’m doing something Taboo with my swordsmen and lvling him without Peltasty.
He’s going to be the cutest Dragoon.

with how pelta is such a main issue with how without it swordsman is useless it really makes me curious why they didint make swashbuckler a swordsman skill since its for the most part what swordsman seems to be used for these days

I think maybe because IMC didn’t want to confuse people into thinking that swordsman SHOULD ONLY be tanks… which, if that is the case, would be stupidly ironic right about now lol.

Why not give Frost cloud to Wizard 1.
Or Joint Penalty.
Why didn’t they give Magic Arrow to Archer c1 when people were complaining about Archers.

This is silly.

as silly as it sounds its pretty much the only thing people want swordsman for these days . swordsman without taunt most people don’t seem to care for. since IMC don’t seem to care for swordsman (since all they have done is nerf them on the ItoS they may as well make them useful for something lol

I’d say it’s because they didn’t foresee how polar the community would be when it came to the meta of the game. The same way they didn’t predict that multi shot skills would be inherently stronger than any single target option. They didn’t do it on purpose, it just kind of plopped out like that.

I mean, I really doubt they’d go through the trouble of making Barbarian, Dopple, Dragoon, Swordman 2/3, and Cataphract, if they wanted an environment where Swordsman are only tanks. Then again, Mr.Kim has always been terrible about over buffing ranged characteristics. So I dunno, it’s just a guess that they just screwed up.

People only wants pelt because that’s the only thing in swordman tree that works in PvE. So instead of making pelt mandatory, just buff other aspect of swordmen (CC & DPS) and the game will balance it out.

70% of swordsman classes are dps.

cleric has the highest damaging ability in the game (under circumstances) and 85% of their attacks are the strongest element in the game.

this game’s about class composition. not base classes. a cleric is a healer. a bokor is a witch doctor. if u go onto any other mmorpg that has bokor/witch doctor , it will always be dps. if u go onto any other mmo, cleric will always be healer. go onto any mmo, swordsman will be tank 50% of the time, and hoplite will always be dps.

thats like saying if u want support go cleric, or if u want to stay alive long go swordsman.

Classes are labeled Attack, Support, Defense, Party, Crafting, Control and Summoning (probably forgetting something). Sometimes they have multiple labels.

Attack type doesn’t necessarily mean the class is focused on dps, but it does mean its offensively oriented.
Cataphract is pretty clearly not a dps class but it is an attack type.
It spreads enemies apart and can isolate them with Impale.

Rodelero is also an attack type and it clearly is not a dps class.
Like Cataphract it pins down an enemy, except instead of being super mobile, it gets in safely by its ability to shutdown long range offense (hence the main purpose of Slithering) while it approaches. Then like the Rodelero master says, they’ll cut off your legs from under their shield.

Scout is a support type but it doesn’t heal anybody, it expands their range and can “get information” because it can overextend with its stealth and barrel.
Falconer is a support type but again no heals, instead it debilitates with debuffs (Circling, and in Ktos it gains blind and other effects).

QS deals some potent damage, but its a defense type character that halts enemy approach as seen with Deploy Pavise, and Caltrops. Enemies engaging into a QS territory have their movements hindered and their (conceptually) projectiles shut down while it can stun you for days and pelt the hell out of you with rapid fire & moving shot.

Everything in Tree of savior follows those lines where it has some sort of gimmick or theme it presents and these may lead it to good damage or may not.

Psychokino is certainly no Elementalist, but Psychokino is Attack, Support type and has a ton of CC tools.

You’re not picking simply DPS, Heal, Tank in ToS.
A lot of classes aren’t good dps but they’re attack type characters.

A lot of swordsmen classes aren’t dps.
Doppel is, Doppels gimmick is living dangerously to reap rewards.
Rodelero isn’t, Cata isn’t, they’re offensive characters, they’re just not focused on dps.
Rangers gimmick is giving up single target potency typical of the Archer damage dealers for some aoe.

Doesn’t mean they can’t deal good or high damage but a lot of classes in this game aren’t focused on being dps or being in a dps race with other classes.
They try to hit off different gimmicks and ‘roles’ as part of the role-play Kim mentioned in that December interview. Thats why you have classes that really contribute nothing real to combat, but because they exist in a role. Templar is for people who want to be Guild Masters and play on that idea. Of course people will just create one and throw it away as they play other characters, but thats the gimmick of it.

Not everything you see that has a red Icon is a dps character.

erm Rodelero is an Defense type. It also might be cause slithering can avoid magic or block magic.

Maybe they should use both colors instead? to indicate it a hybrid.

Like Red with Blue or Red with Green. Or Blue with Green. Or Yellow with Green.

Also I do wish there is a magic swordman. But meh that dream won’t be a reality because going magic means you must suffer the entire level till you reach that very class that uses it because you will be building int. And that bad design.

I do agree its like corsairs which while C1 lacks much in the DPS part C2 gets Hexen and Weapon Assault and C3 pistol skill. my guess on how IMC did the support tag is if it somewhat or somehow aids party members or other players like a Templar which only has 1 battle buff but makes guilds, Corsair I think was given it for jolly roger and the pirate party , the cleric supports seem right too but the one that sticks out to me is hunter as it seems more of a attacking class than a support.

what would be cool is if they made new icons with ones that are hybrid with a / in the middle with half of it one type of medal half of it the other (like if you hit corsair 2 half of it becomes the green circle and half of it becomes the red spiky icon

This is more or less correct, but your examples are not

Cataphract is a DPS type, with good skill damage, and relatively short cooldown (within swordman tree, of course it cannot compare with archer cooldown)

Rodelero is a defensive type, a CC defensive, not a pure defensive class

If we really get down to it, here’s what swordman tree spread:

  • Attack - Supportive: swordman, corsair, squire
  • Defensive: peltasta, rodelero
  • DPS: highlander, doppel, shinobi, fencer, cataphract
  • Burst: barb, hoplite
