Several AFK players abusing companions in Tenet Church

First let me say that I have nothing against these people, this was just the first time I had come across so many people doing this at once (haven’t been playing long), and as such have carefully re-read the terms of the TOS Terms of Service to ensure that what I am reporting is valid and not in any way detrimental to my own account, based on these criteria:

"You shall not continuously act in a way to disrupt other players’ gameplay…

You shall not abuse or exploit abnormal AI, items or quests to obtain illicit gains…

You may not acquire illicit gain through the means of deception or unfair methods."

These guys are clearly seen sitting still, letting their companions work for them, for at least an hour in the videos. I was also logged on last night around 1:30 AM EST and saw the same players in this area also AFK abusing. I only have evidence of their activity for about an hour’s length, while I was present farming a gilt helm to complete my area collection (see above). I feel it is unfair that these players are able to exploit the companion AI in such a way that they do not have to actively play the game.

I also understand that this report does not necessitate a disruption to my game play, but may to other players who, like me, are at a disadvantage when it comes to actively playing the game versus letting the companion AI do it for us.

As a brand new player to TOS (gasp!), I have seen many of these reports in the past two weeks that I have been lurking on the forums. I feel that I should give a disclaimers such as this to protect my own account.

There was also one other player, but I decided not to include them as they were in an unassuming location that really had no effect on map spawn.

Can you investigate?

Thank you, @STAFF_Ethan

I’m pretty sure stuff like afk farming through game mechanics isn’t against the terms of service. There are other ways to do it as well, such as kneeling shot on Archers. It was designed to allow it to happen. It’s not a disruption to other’s gameplay, afaik.

I tried to address that as best I could. I don’t think they should be banned or punished severely for it, but I do think that the behavior should be prevented. For instance, disconnecting players who are afk longer than, say , 20 minutes, unless they are queued for a dungeon/pvp/etc. From the looks of these characters, a lot of time has been invested into them and to ban them for something minor wouldn’t fit the crime. That said, I still think it a crime, as the mechanics were not meant to be used in such a way.

I dont see whats wrong. It is intended for the pets to protect the user from mobs that are attacking. The pet does not chase after every mobs for no reason, range is really short, low aggro and slow killing. Also, monsters wont constantly respawn at the same spawn point unless there are people actively killing monsters at other spawn points. For this afk grind to work, there has to be alot of people doing it at different spots or bots actively wiping the mobs everywhere. In the end, you can almost blame the bots for making the spawn rate ‘interesting’.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘other players are at disadvantage’ because everyone can purchase pet at the companion npc. In order to do afk grind, the pet has to be atleast lv150 and with stats upgraded to do things somewhat efficiently. You have to put effort into levelling the pet. Your character will be totally vulnerable when some naughty player/oracle decided to summon high level monster. Even a lv150 pet cant promise your survival at all time.

I like artisticnstuff’s suggestion. By implementing a player activity check, for example if the mouse was not moved for a certain amount of time, the game will return to character selection screen. However this can cause more annoyance than the pet afk grind itself. The ideal way to deal with this issue is probably prevent botting, so that the monster respawn rate can be return to ‘normal’. Without bots constantly killing mobs, mobs seriously spawn really slowly…

IMC already responded to this before, anything that is utilizing game mechanics are allowed.
