I agree with what you said. However, I still insist that doing it in this thread is not the optimal way to argue it. My views are below if you’re interested.
TP-Silver debate:
I was never comfortable with the TP for silver thing.
A lot of people argue that selling tokens and cash items for silver is fine because it’s ‘pay for convenience’, but I think it isn’t because it confers a significant in-game advantage to them. People’s definition of p2w = paid can get / free can’t. It’s not so simple.
There’s pay for convenience as in pay to save 10 hours of time, and then there’s pay for convenience as in to pay to save 10000 hours of time. Like for example, exp tomes are typically not pay for convenience, because the argument was that free players eventually hit 280 too, so they are not at a disadvantage, it’s only a matter of time. But what happens if, hypothetically free players earn a glacial pace of 0.01% exp per kill, while paid players earn 10% a kill? Most people would agree that that would be completely wrong.
Similarly, if a paid player earns so much silver compared to a free player, then something is wrong.
I’m just using this example to illustrate that p2w exists on a spectrum. The proper test to determine p2w is not JUST whether a free player can access it or not. That is a useful factor for consideration, but it’s not the sole determination.
The proper test should be whether the absence of the item is so significantly to the disadvantage of the free player that it begins to impede their gameplay experience.
Obviously this is vague as hell, but at least it addresses the need for more nuanced solutions in balancing the interests of free players vs paid players.
My point is that people need to think carefully about the full impact of a cash item. It’s not so obvious at first glance. Some are obvious like untradeable cash costumes, others are not.
Also, in spite of my views on this. I’ve come to mostly accept it, because it’s not such a serious problem as other blatantly p2w stuff.
