Pets needs a revamp

Well, sadly, pets are kind of broken currently.
If you also plays with a hunter character and just received your pet,
and passed some time progressing in quest line with it, you’ll
notice my point.

The pets are a nice feature that this game have, where you can
have a companion that can help you during combats, and also
help you in the progress.

The problem is that leveling them up is a pain.

Let’s say that you are around level 40 and acquired all the
silver coins to buy the pet (or acquired Hunter class), you buy the
pet, and discovers that it’s level 1, you quickly think (Well, I’ll have
to bring it to near my level in order to the pet survive the map difficulties).

The problems begins when you discover that monsters around the pet level DOES NOT gives exp, they only give exp to the pet if the monster you are attacking is around your level.
I’m not sure wether this issue appeared since kOBT (because on CBT2 wasn’t like that) or whatever, but the only way of leveling up the pet would be either to grind your pet on the areas around you level, avoiding the pet to faint due to monster attacks, or create a new character and level your pet with it, since completting quests and killing mobs around the character level gives exp (not sure wether the pet being higher level than the monster still earns pet exp).

The second issue is the Train system. Or I’d say “Drain” system, where you spend an ascending pile of silver coins to increase a pet status point (more status points if for health).
The entire train system, in my opnion, is a failure, since it’s sole purpose seems to be of draining the player silver coins.
If you plan on using it to make your pet reach around the values of your player status, forget it, you will regret.
Spent around 100k silver coins trying to make my pet have more tenacity, ended up with the pet less than half the status points my character had, plus ended up with 4k on the inventory only.
The training system, as I said before on CBT 2, and certainly the developers didn’t even took a look, should work just like the player status, but costing silver coins to train, that would make the training system better, and less a mess that wastes your coin system that it is now.

The third, pets can get stuck when using hunter skills, and killing the monster they are going to use the skill, probably the pet is still trying to follow the monster who died to use the skill.

Beside those system needs revamps, I may have some ideas that may turn it better to make the pets be better, at least for leveling them.

  1. If the player is too higher leveled than the pet, the pet would get a exp bonus acquisition so the pet can actually reach the player level.
  2. The Train system would be used to increase the pet level, but the pet level should not pass 10 levels bellow the player.
  3. If a player is higher leveled, and a pet kills alone a monster of the pet level, the exp goes entirelly to the pet, in case the player kills it, 50% goes to the pet (the other 50% are lost, since the player is higher leveled than the monster).

Well, those are my feedbacks and ideas.
Please IMC, Fix the pet system.

This issue sucks a lot to be left to rot.

The AI is also horrendous, they need to allow custom AI like Ragnarok had.
Or at least give us some control over them, like setting basic AI to passive or aggressive.

Maybe pets should be able to loot aswell (just like Ragnarok)

All pets should be available to all classes, but only the special class skills work if you have that class. I should be able to buy hawke and just have it as a normal pet, but if I become a falconer my abilities use the pet (possibly scale the damage off my pet level?)

Basically just make this game Ragnarok.
It’s what we all wanted but didn’t get from Ragnarok2.

Yeah, he pet AI is bad, beside it does not try at least a bit to avoid an AOE attack, the pet does not seems to seek heal from ally players, plus keep attacking an enemy, even if the damage they deal is 1.

If you use Hunter class and stack more than one skill on the pet,
the pet have higher chances of getting stuck, they also can get
stuck by not being able to pass through some bridges and other things.

There is a high chance that the pet will miss the attacks, if the player and
the enemy monster is constantly in movement.

They surelly need to review pets.

Beside I agree also about the idea of making pets kind of like Ragnarok Online, would be cool having a Pantos pet.

I just bought myself a pet and i don’t see this problem. I have a 215 Alchemist and 169 QS. I bringed along my lvl 1 pet in mission, he instantly lvled to lvl 73. If anything, they are extremely easy to lvl because you can bring it along any character and he gains insane amount of xp. Doesn’t matter if he dies, he still gets the xp.

BUT, I agree that pets overall are horrible. Attack are way to slow, AI is horrible. I only bought it so it gives myself more team xp.

If you don’t have a high level char to speed level your pet then yes it can be a mayor issue.

Overall if you only have Hunter leveled on your account then finally unlock a pet, only options is to try to level it thru mobs u can fight on hunter, or level a few alts with the pet, then trade pet back to hunter later on to continue leveling it once its kinda caught up some.

No need to worry about leveling a newly acquired level 1. It doesn’t really die and just runs out of stamina at zero hp. You’ll only want to feed it and keep its stamina up if you’re a Cataphract or S. Reiter to benefit from the bonus stats, or as a Hunter so it doesn’t lag behind or get stunlocked by mobs.

You can bring it along as you progress through the game on any of your chars, may it be doing quests, running missions and dungeons or participating in grinds. It will eventually catch up at about 10-15 levels lower than your highest level character.

Sauce: I have a hunter/falconer main and a cataphract alt

They can take as much as needed to recode the AI, but what I want that I think that it’ll make our lives easier is making an option to toggle pet’s agressiveness…as well as ignoring or unprioritizing summoned objects…my Hoglan has an obsession over stepping and biting caltrops.

The fact that you can move your pet across characters makes leveling a pet class secondary. Go to 280 and your pet is basically 280, another alt would guarantee it to be 280.

Bring it to mission/dungeon runs with you, they would catch up, that’s what a did tom mine. 100 Lv difference now its just around 30-ish

What I would want

Cuter Pets (current pets are ugly)

Better AI, they get in the way more most of the time than be of help
aside from the basic commands like feed, pet, mount, there should also be options to set how they behave and interact

I like how the monster hunter felyne system works, devs should take i1. deas from that

Able to issue command to:

“attack’
“defend”
“Don’t attack”
“Stay behind me”
“hold position”
“heal/cure ability”
'hide”

Usefull accessories. customize saddles. armor

Did I say cuter pets? yes cuter pets!! I think they are ugly. Give us a Raptor, a griffin, a dragon, a giant chicken,

companion evolution system, changes appearance as they level up just like characters changing classes. customizable abilities to complimet character

They are called companions and not “war machines”.
Of course for classes that don’t use them as mounts or means to attack with they are pointless to get in the first place. Compared to how the pets started at Ragnarok Online(purely “cosmetic” feature before adding stat boni and the ability to use skills/attack with higher intimacy lvls), the “pets” here are already quite ok.

At the moment, there are several issues that are against improving pet performance:

1.: better standard companions make companion-focused classes obsolete.
2.: Improved AI would also aid botters because they have currently the most ressources to invest. Imagine every bot running alongside a pet, effectively making it two bots? No,please not until the bot issue is fixed and the game hype is over.
3.: Considering the stupid AI of the monsters, do you really believe that a fellow monster could be any smarter than his friends in the wilds? Imagine that guy becomes smarter than them, the game itself becomes a disaster because people could just send pets to tank/aggro mobs (or they would do it automatically).

However, the current system should be improved, either by making pets give certain stat boni, depending on the type of the pet (like in RO)
or by actually creating a kind of AI like those “creatures” in Black&White had, making them able to learn some simple things if you teach them (like skills), depending on their type/attribute/etc.
E.g. A certain monster with a bow being able to learn a certain bow skill if shown often enough by his “master” while another one could learn a simple magic spell. However, these skills should be limited to Rank 1 basic classes (Archer,Swordman,Cleric and Wizard).

Easy manageable by setting it in a kind of achievement matter. This could also be used to improve the interaction with certain monsters, meaning e.g. that if your monster fights against a certain monster for a set amount of times, its behaviour against this monster improves.
If your companion is killed by it, the AI could change to avoid contact, while a certain victory streak could lead to more aggressive behaviour.

This would also (and greatly) improve the value of Hunter and Falconer class while not being overly OP since bots wouldn’t really profit from it and normal classes had to invest way more time to make the companion at least decent through this kind of training because of the lack of skills to command the pet.
