It is a known fact that, right now, an overwhelming majority of the community are using add-ons.
Yet I keep hearing, “You knew the risk and still you chose to use add-ons.”
The argument is moot. Why? Because too many people are using add-ons right now. We now have a community where an overwhelming number of people are using add-ons where add-ons are not entirely supported, yet not ‘banned’ officially either.
It means they are in a grey area right now. On top of this, add-ons are not approved or even looked at by IMC until one is confirmed to be an exploit that needs to be patched.
Why is that a problem? How much freedom does an add-on dev have with their add-ons? Could someone, just for fun, make an add-on that does things in the background you do not know about which can result in your account being banned?
It’s tinfoil hat stuff for sure, but can it happen or can’t it happen? I would assume it possible.
Even if the add-on dev’s intent was not to cause harm, could something that seems harmless to us actually result in us being banned over it? What happens if we end up with a wave of innocent players being wrongfully banned in a game that’s already struggling to stay alive?
With add-on security and loopholes already being discovered, IMC not monitoring these add-ons and the community just spreading them around and using them under the assumption that they are okay going off of IMC’s vague definition on what is okay, is it really okay to simply accuse the gamer of being at fault here?
If everyone was encouraged to uninstall their add-ons, it would make a lot of angry people.
So we all know that there’s a grey area. We also don’t know what is really in these add-ons we are installing (I assume they are all made with “good intent”) and we only have assumptions on which ones are okay beyond what IMC has said is okay, “Exp viewer” and the map add-on for example.
I’m not a fear monger and I was also not banned. I am speaking only out of concern here. There are too many people using add-ons to simply laugh and call someone stupid for being banned over using an add-on because not all add-ons are easy for us to determine if they are “legal” to use. They may be completely fine to us.
I’ve dropped my add-ons except the 2 that IMC has said are okay: Map add-on and exp viewer. Until IMC confirms any others are okay, I will stick to these. Conveniences are not worth an account ban to me.
