PC experts? Looking to spend some cash on upgrading PC

You literally are agreeing with my previous point.

You called it overkill, now its fine to pay and spend more. DDR4 is not worth the entire set upgrade, it makes it more expensive.

It’s Overkill, because he doesn’t need the wattage…and never will. Because of that, he will never reach the rated efficiency for it and waste power. Besides, he doesn’t need a PSU with a fan on it.

DDR4 is a pitance, and can be had for almost the same price as DDR3. So unless they already have 8 GB+ of DDR3… There is no reason to avoid it.

An 80%+ bronze 600W PSU will do just fine, especially because it’s from a renowned manufacturer, those tend to perform fine. Point still is that the options you are thinking of are expensive, while we do agree on the PSU performance part (the fact that people should not shy away from an expensive PSU)

80% Bronze may not be enough, if he lives in a place where Power costs are rather extreme. Which, a person probably does if they are working with a strict budget.

Also, as I said before… That Bronze raing only gets achieved when the PSU is loaded to a certain point. Efficiency, if you recall. I can guarantee you that a 960, and non-oc Haswell CPU will not even approach 50% of that PSU’s capability.

Oh, and DD4 consumes less power.

it’s overkill if you consider what kind of parts he is using, but it’s maybe ok if he plans to upgrade his parts in the future. I will always go with more watts if you can afford it but makes sure it is rated.

I think what you want is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PCMasterRace/wiki/builds on a side note there are some choke problems in the coding of ToS game isn’t really optimized for good computers from what I hear… and I’m sure 3 other people can give you a specific run down on what the limiting factor(s) is(are).

If you plan on going VR sooner or later $1000 seems reasonable.

For common gaming/non programming/ non rendering usage:

Prices are based on US

-GTX 970 ~250$ from Jet.com with 15-20% off promo code (NO TAX FREE SHIPPING WOOO)
-i5 4690k ~ 200$
OR
-i5 6600k ~ 230$

  • you can skimp on CPU if you don’t think you’ll overclock in the future.

-16 GB RAM ~ 60$ (cheap so why not; run like 30 tabs of Chrome and still not lag!!!111!1!For those who want to argue: scroll to * of my post)

  • 600W or so PSU (modular) ~ 60$
  • 250GB Samsung SSD ~ 70$
  • CPU cooler ~40$
Total: ~730 with Tax (excluding the GTX 970)

And the rest on a case of your choice and motherboard that fits your case

Here’s my setup:

And LOL about the argument about PSU efficiency and other stuff people are getting in-depth about. Assuming you live in the US, paying an extra $10 or so per year shouldn’t set you back.
OP is not technically as savvy. He/she doesn’t need to worry about all these constraints and worries you guys are talking about. He/she won’t be running multi threaded intensive programs nor will he/she will be running VMs.

  • I actually found Windows 10 eating a ton of RAM from running MGS5 and some Chrome tabs, even had a warning to shut some stuff off in order to free up memory (I had 8 GB RAM at the time)
