PC experts? Looking to spend some cash on upgrading PC

Hello,

Looking for some help on building new PC. I’m no expert, and way too many options out there. Way too overwhelming and giving me a headache. Want to play ToS on highest settings, very smoothly. Looking to spend $1000, more if I need to. Doesn’t need to be top of the line products, but I want something that will last me couple years and won’t be completely obsolete in 3-5 years…

Here are my current specs:
Windows 7
AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor 5000+ (2 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
4096 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Again, I don’t know too much about PCs, just very basic knowledge. Recommending specific brands and products would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Mike

Haha sorry, first time posting in a forum. Let me know if/how I can change or move that.

SO this means you want to put it together yourself, yes? ALso, you should be able to move it if you edit your original post.

Via editing you can move it =)

Are looking for a laptop/desktop ?
If desktop, are you planning to get a branded one or custom build ?
(If custom, tell your country, might help someone recommending a good eshop)

ToS don’t really need $1000 PC btw ^^

Few advices just in case,

  • get a SSD, even if less capacity, you will feel the difference.
  • you will need to change/upgrade some parts in 3-5 years if you planned on playing always on high (or ultra)

Yeah, I have a PC (specs above). Looking to upgrade the parts. And yes, I will put it together myself.

Thanks, let me try that.

This is a custom build for a desktop. I reside in the US.

Thanks for the feedback!

Should be in the off-topic section.

But if any, you may want to upgrade to Windows 10, Intel i3 or i5 (i7 is overkill), 8GB RAM to say the least, and for the graphics card, you could wait until nVidia releases their Pascal or AMD with their Polaris.

If you want to get any now, I have to say nVidia 970 or Radeon R9 290/390X equivalent, and do note that 390X supports DirectX 12 (nVidia doesn’t have it for now).

The specs above are mostly to run triple A game titles in their best settings and it should lasts for a 2-4 years, plus VR compatible. If you are just using it for online gaming, GTX 550 Ti is more than enough.

imo i think you should ask pc forums for more reliable info :grinning:

You’re going to want to list your Power Supply specs, as that’s what is really going to hold you back from upgrading that machine. It doesn’t sound like you would have a decent output, with what you currently have.

Yeah bad timing on my part, saw your answer a few seconds after.

If you don’t have a SDD, get one, Samsung EVO are good. Get another RAM chip to get at least 8gb, that the basics.

As you plan to upgrade your current specs, I suggest you to list your motherboard as well.
And @shiroyasha716 is right, tomhardware is the first place to go for this kind of stuff ^^

@Panplemousse thank you.

Motherboard: BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS M2A-VM ACPI BIOS Revision 1901, 7/21/2008

@Senpaikunchanperson google is telling me I have to open up my pc to find that info? What kind of power supply would you recommend?

@ shiro. Thanks but the reason I posted this here was in hopes that I could get feedback from people that have previously run ToS, perhaps through closed beta or kTOS.

Please keep in mind that I am looking for a PC to run ToS smoothly. Not trying to build a supercomputer. $1000 was just a budget.

@mrmikee

THe power supply you need depends on what components you want to power. O_o But let’s assume we need to replace it… SInce you already have all the drives, and Windows…

Does your current case support Full Size ATX motherboards? I can’t recommend one until you find out.

And I stand corrected, GTX 550 Ti is more than enough since it’s a mid range graphics card but you still need to upgrade certain things as said though such as Windows 10 (if you want, Windows 7 is still better for me), 4 GB is okay but 8GB is more preferable, i3 or i5 as a CPU. You don’t need to spend much since it’s just for online gaming.

Mine is an old horse but still able to keep up with ToS recommended settings. The only thing that the game lacks during iCBT was the optimization.

550 Ti is not a “MId-range” Graphics card. X_X Not by today’s standards, anyhow. Also, his GPU doesn’t even support Windows 10. Not that he should bother spending money on a new OS, when he already has one.

It will do for “tos” but for new games granted you can’t max everything but it’s still playable at “mid-low” settings…

Soo @mrmikee if you’re not the graphics guy i think your “card should do fine for now” i recommend upgrading your processor first cause dual core this day won’t give you much breathing room…

For ToS, yes, sure, it will work… But it won’t give him a lot of breathing room with anything else. Besides, it behooves him to upgrade everything, and leave the anaemic GPU alone.

It’s already okay for ToS since mine is 610M (like I said, mine’s an old horse). The other choice is having GTX 750 Ti which is often used to build DoTA 2 equivalent rig and have it at ultra settings… You could have anything above than that such as having 390X or 970/980 but that is already overkill since he already stated just to use it on ToS.

Well, he specifically said 1000$… If this was only to play ToS, he would only need a fraction of the money.

Yeah if he’s likes the graphics guy then yeah i agree with you…

And if he plans to do some editing as well then change the Vcard Lol…

Mine’s a potato and still run “Triple A titles” Mid-low settings 60~45ish fps

Ati Radeon HD 5850
