Open world non linear (hopefully)

i think your confusing terminologies

instanced world = party restricted zones = Dragons Nest, PSO2, Vindictus

open world = anyone can access zones = most mmos inlcuding RO and ToS

seamless world = no individual zones continuous fields and area with no loading = Eve online

liniear/theme park = game forces you through a quest and tells you what to do until end game

Sandbox = user able affect the world environment = minecraft

based on your terminology ro would be not openworld.

because you can not access several maps if you have a to high level or did not finished a special quest for nameless island for example.

but to be honest, i don’t give a ■■■■ if someone names ro open world or what ever ^^

but the fact of linearity is not visible for me on tos, as the maps are scrambled to much.

here is a better explaination

instanced = game make a zone for player and his party only

open world = everyone can enter a zone

seamless = everyone is one giant zone

Tos is open world game with Zones.

basted on this ToS is a seamless world with the possibility of partial instanced dungeons.

no, ToS is

seamless world mmos are rare…the most popular seamless world mmo is Eve Online where you can travel as far as lightyears distance of space without loading screens. In eve the entire universe is 1 zone only and all 20,000+ players are in that 1 zone.

As long as you can see other people in the same map in the majority of the game, is an open world game.

However, Ragnarok does have some instanced content, and so will ToS (I think).

lol ro is open world buddy…

I never really consider open world games if they’re made by imposing such restriction on the maps (such as artificial barriers/walls, loading screens, where to go, etc) as said on your quote, actually.

An example of a better open world to me would be World of Warcraft, though it still has high level instances.
RO does have some restrictions on that, if you all don’t remember. Some high level places are only accessible after a certain level or quest.

Apologies if I were unclear or misleading.

I wont ever again mention RO, people will fight over it. I mean, i just wanted to express, how games that have that “FREEDOM” feeling while playing, like runescape, or ultima, or even terraria. Quests are an asset but not a must !
I remember times when i logged just to see people walking around, and chat, simply as that, just chat, you could learn more chatting than actually playing. Just as we are doing it now.
I’m not a game designer nor anything professional so i don’t know any technical terms.
Just express how you feel about the game, what you wish, and you wish not.

gamers are evolving

.

Portals are not a mean of restriction but rather a mean of not making the game take 9999GB in your RAM XD And the point in Open World is not about being unable to enter specific places, it’s just about freedom of going where you want

Think something like Half Life or BioShock, they have a plot line that you HAVE to follow. You can’t go back, you can’t go left or right. Once you enter a new area and finish your role in it, you can’t re-enter it. These were ALWAYS the case until some games started developing the “freedom” concept.

And as the rest of the replies mentioned you’re confusing Seamless World with Open World

And thus gamers made “Seamless World” to represent these seamless games, but they are very few and for a good reason too… you can’t really have an infinitely big world without having an infinite computer memory

ah…why arguing about RO…this is TOS!
and RO ofc is an open world game although people stick to a certain route for leveling after so many years development.
u can freely enter a high level map without warning, isnt that a open world? plus, u can have so many map choices for leveling, though efficiency differs.

Ah, I understand. In that case my description does fit better in a “seamless world”. Fair enough.

Just to get back on topic, from what I saw on the videos ToS does give you the freedom to access many places… I’m unsure of any restrictions (aside from instances?). I’ll be able to confirm that once KR cbt starts.

Personally, if i can move freely in an room, then thats an open world for me. The only difference is how big the room is, and how many interactables it has, really.

dude instanced and lobby mmo game allow you to freely move in rooms/zones but only to your party

What about party finder ? Will there be tools for it ?

It would be better if they remove the “auto-click heading to your destination kind of thing too”, and the arrow that points out the direction you’re headed. I suggest something like this for a quest guide.

Is that flyff ?
That’s an example of what we should not do.
Flyff < a game “open world” that had so much potential, but no, linear as hell, cash as hell, unbalanced classes. But hey ! They could fly (first game to do so) ! Amazing.
