I know this topic has been discussed thousand times, but people should discuss this.
A game this big has to be open world non linear (at least that). Why ? I give you reasons:
First everyone will be always the same place for that ranging level.
Every new character you will be at the same (old) linear place.
You will get bored fast.
Games from my experience had this mentioned above:
-grand chase
-elsword
-neverwinter nights online
-ddo
-diablo series
-tera online
-many more.
These mentioned above they could do more, but no, everyone has that only way. you cannot change. The game is great, but you always will be moving the way they want you to.
Games that are old, non linear and they are sucess until now:
-Ragnarok
-Lineage series
-runescape
-ultima
-tibia
-minecraft
-wow
-and many more.
These mentioned here, you start the game with no clue where to go, talk to people, talk to npcs, learn the game, go where you please, get items from many different monsters, do you way. Donât you wanna kill monsters ? No problemo, the game offers you many more than that. I just, donât wanna get frustrated waiting so long for something like ragnarok 2 or worse.
What do you think about this ? What you think it should be ?
yeah games that spoonfeeding you gets boring fast. i mean, who wanted to be told where you will go and what to do next? it felt so limited
RO isnât open world, wtf lol
Anyway, I donât recall seeing any portals on the ToS cbt videos⌠I mightâve just missed it. I donât particularly mind it much (you must also understand that open world increases lag etc), but I do enjoy open worlds as well since its great for exploring. It depends on the type of game really.
Also IMC has already said that they wanted to make things non-linear from the start, as in not spoonfeeding the players with quests too much and just letting them find out on their own which way to go. As for spots to level, thatâs also something that can be achieved in many different ways depending on whether youâre leveling solo, party, quest, boss hunt, etc;
I hope that TOS is a game that gives you the freedom to explore and find out things for yourself.
I hope that the game does not have a specific set path for everyone to follow in order progress, progression should come from team work and figuring out best methods to level up.
I hope that items are tradable amongst each other and even allowed to be thrown on the ground at some stage rather then the bind to account we see in every mmo.
I hope that I can party with friends or randoms and set out to try and conquer dungeons we are not suppose to be at. Item chance should be a big deal and drop Rates should be In corporated within the game instead of items dropping 100% of the time.
Tanking low level players should still be around, I think it really helps lower level players/ new players, if this game was more like ragnarok that is.
Some random thoughts.
Itâs a great concept and I loved when I played ArcheAge. But, unfortunately this is ToS and the concept has already been designed and pretty much finalized. They arenât going to make a complete 180 and change up all their maps at this point.
yep ToS from the beggining had a story plot and whether you like it or not it will be there.
else just go back to RO
Well here is how ToS works:
- There is a storyline/main quest.
- All other quests are free quests, you must discover them if you want to do them.
- There is less linearity now as you have multiple areas you can choose to level in at every level range, some will probably work better depending on your class/party
from cbt3 notes free quests are going to be hidden and requires you to explore by yourselfâŚthe latest cbt3 note looks interesting
critics will still call it linearity hence will still consider ToS as themepark
ro was non linear. its no longer that way now. thats a reason why people left.
and i think TOS have statue to warp u to different map, maybe just like a portal
I think itâs more of an exploration
the maps are individual like RO with âportalsâ leading in and out of them. They look like a big green arrow, when u stand on them u go to next map over.
Runescape may suck now, but back then it have the best quest I ever experience than any other MMO. All quest were unique, challenging, and in the end satisfying.
Personally, I donât think games like ToS fits the fully free open world domain. Thereâs already plenty of games out there that strive for the immersive realistic experience as the main focus. ToS I believe should stick with itâs current game plan, level up, choose awesome classes, choose awesome skills, grind for the fat loot, show off to friends, grind together, join a guild, dominate.
Itâs refreshing to see games like this are still being created.
sorry for off topic: but why is ro not open world? just because it has not a seamless connected map? or is it because there are spots you canât reach as they are âbackgroundâ ?
Guys, what he means with a non open world isnât about divided maps through portals or anything. In Ragnarok Online you could (can) go everywhere, no level restriction maps (well, there are some, but they are minimum and with quest-relate requirements) there are tons, tons of directions you can take and dungeons to find on your own, thatâs what he means⌠If youâre new in RO you often discover dungs with really strong monsters, sometimes getting 1HKO from them (AKA Thor Volcano) then you call your friends and/or mount a party with all necessary jobs and take on that challengeâŚ! Good old times.
Of course Iâd love ToS to be like that, open world non linear, but Iâm actually not hoping for it⌠Still, some of you (FatePGN) are saying that youâll be able to choose between areas of your level range, that, at least, is a relief for me.
Original Poster is right⌠Ragnarok Online IS an Open World. All of the mentioned games Original Poster labelled as open world ARE open world.
Some of you donât understand the meaning of open world
Having a main quest doesnât mean it will be âlinearâ in fact one of the most popular recent games that resembles open world very well and lots of us have played it is: Skyrim!
Yes there is a main quest. Yes, there are a ton of side quests. Yes, you can explore the world freely and you donât have to just keep doing the main quest until you âfinishâ the game.
ToS is already decided to be open world with a main quest like Skyrim and Ragnarok (Yes! Ragnarok has a plot line that almost none of its players know)
And if a game is open world it has to be non-linear (But not vice versa). Because you canât really make an open world linear game or in that case it stops being open world because youâre restricted linearly.
Beside the fact that there is no Open World in TOS:
Flash datamined the level information of the maps and the connection and created a worldmap for this.
as you can see, the levels of the maps are mixed up, so there is no âThis is a low level town, and this is a high level townâ
Kind regards
Gardosen
I would say WoW is just as linear as like TERAâŚ
Sure you can go anywhere but there is nothing to do in a zone until you can actually kill things there. A better example may have been FFXIV which I think will relate a lot to ToS. Some things will need to be unlocked but zones will have wide ranges of mobs/quests (for example you can find lvl 1 mobs/quests in a zone you can find lvl 49 ones.
RO is open world.
You are confusing the terms âopen worldâ with âseamless worldâ.
