LF Advice on Hybrid Dragoon for R10

So I’m trying my hand at another Swordie and I really like the looks of Dragoon. Been doing some lurking and it seems like the most common path is, Swordsman -> Hoplite -> Goon, with various options to fill in the gaps. I’ve seen recommendations for Peltasta, Doppelsoeldner, and Barbarian; each one depending on what the player’s looking to do.

For mine, I’d like to be able to do some off-tanking in PvE while still being viable in PvP. I was thinking of something like Sword -> Pelt2 -> Hop3 -> Goon3 -> Shinobi but I have some questions.

  1. Is Restrain that important for PvP? I know a lot of old Swordie builds consider max Restrain a necessity for PvP but I don’t know if that’s still applicable in the current meta or will be in the future.

  2. Is Pelt2 that much more effective than Pelt1? Having more levels in Swashbuckling would let me pull more mobs, but I’m not sure if it’s a make or break thing in a build that’s not intended to be tanking full-time.

  3. Is Shinobi a good choice for Rank 10? Hoplite/Shinobi builds were popular in the past but I don’t know how well the class pairs with Dragoon. I’d like to use it for the stealth in PvP but I’m not familiar with its synergies.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations on classes, skill distribution, and/or stat loadouts. This build seems great in my head but I figured I should come to the experts before I try anything.

1.) No, not anymore. Depending on your server, nearly all PVP Clerics just get at least PD1 or other classes with some sort of status immunity/blocking these days.

2.) Yes. Pel2 gives you nearly 100% uptime for Guardian and IIRC 50% uptime for High Guard.

3.) IMO yes. Nak Muay on paper seems like a good option as well for PVP.

Isnt the most obvious class rete c1?
Pull rete===>D-fall = 2x dmg

Trident finisher is a good skill too.

Thanks for the response. Good to know I don’t need Swordsman3. Restrain seems nice but I’ve always found maxing the base classes to be a pretty underwhelming option.

Retiarius looks fun and I’m sure the skills are strong but I’m really looking to add some stealth capability so Shinobi is my go-to choice. If Reti turns out to be significantly better I can always use the rank roll back to change it up later.

Oh how could I miss that lol thanks for the reminder. XD I have a Ret myself and I forgot that. Definitely Ret1 for R10. @Timeshadow

Stealth is gone if you use guardian.
Or it was that way (My Shinobis are gone)

Copyableskill from dragoon are dragon soar and dragon tooth??

You could put Barb c1-c2 in the build Cleave/seism are copyable.
And cleave´s slash debuff works great with dragonsoar.

MAybe even sw3 2x slash is copyable too.
Hoplite has only synchro thrusting to copy.

If you want to see it in action:

not worth copying dragon soar.

Attribute doesnt get copied (double soar hit) and it increases your CD. barb 1 is probably ideal if you don’t like fisherboi.

He want to go shinobi i just give my opinion.
I will go rete c1 for sure :satisfaction:

All Goons should go rete1 for rank 10 without question. The boost in 1h spear pierce damage from pull and throw rete is a boost to all of your dragoon skills directly.

Also Trident Finisher is stupid powerful even at lvl5.

1.) You don’t want restrain for pvp, it actually hurts you since you will be cycling your stun diminishing returns too quickly and making your enemy immune to stuns. You want sw3 for pain barrier 15 and the attribute. Without it, expect to be instantly crowd controlled the moment you get close to a wizard since Earthquake is instant cast now.

2.) Pelt2 is good for guardian being close to 100% uptime. The damage reduction is legendary, however don’t expect pelt skills to do any damage without murmillo.

3.) Shinobi is no longer something that all swordies need. As a pierce-centric class, you should be getting rete1.

It is very hard to make a goon3 build that can both tank and be effective in pvp. I would recommend picking one.

I’m currently have a sword1>pelt2>hop3>Goon3 planning rete1 for rank 10. I’m still thinking whether to change my earlier ranks to pelt3>hop2 just for the umbo thrust debuff. I have a pelt3>hop3>murmillo2 and it feels nice for boosting damage. I want to confirm the duration of the debuff and how the it actually works though. Will it be worth it to sacrifice hop3?

Umbo Thrust is the reason to go peltasta in my eyes. It is the only skill you need to hold threat over anyone else, provided you invest in it properly. Problem is that you are minimizing its effectiveness unless you go murmillo for the damage boost.

Goon3 is at its best when treated as a pure DPS class and not a hybrid tank. You will never be able to out tank a well-built murmillo or matador.

If you are just getting peltasta for swashbuckling and guardian, then pelt2 is fine and I would stick with hop3.

I’m not planning on using pelt3 as a tank though. I’m more interested on the armor break debuff of umbo thrust. Just thinking if I can burst to kill mobs together with it. How many seconds is the debuff and does the debuff really ignore the def of mobs?

The debuff lasts for 6 secs 3secs, with 2 overheats well aligned you can have it up for 6 secs. It does not ignore enemy defense but reduce it for a good margin, try testing it with your murmilo since you have both chars. I reseted my Pelta 3 murm to Dragoon, can’t test anymore.

What you need to consider is if you will have really use for this since without Murmilo the skill damage will not be great, Synchro will be better and stabbing grants sure victory at Hop 3.
Also, you already have spear lunge and serpentine to boost you own skills, umbo would only come in hand in a party + heavy defense scenario, like valcofer.

I love cleave + dragon soar combo, so i will do sw-pelt2-hop2-barb1-goon3-reit1 :3

Its only 3 seconds per application, so 6 seconds total

Thanks, I’m no ingame right now.

That would be stupid. You deal more damage when using Trident Finish + e.g. Stabbing/Dagger Finish on Pull Rete than Dragon Fall, because the charge+ animation time of Dragon Fall will use up the majority of the duration of Pull Rete.

I’d use Dragon Fall on Throw Rete since the debuff duration isn’t that long and the CD matches the CD of Dragon Fall much more. Also, the attack range of Dragon Fall is larger than most melee skills, which benefit from Pull Rete.

For the sake of PVP, you can rotate Dagger Guard and High Guard of Peltasta

You might be able to sneak a dragon fall right at the tail end of pull rete instead of at the start. i.e. pull + 3x trident + 1-2x dragon soar + dragon fall

why dragon soar? it is a slash attack
