Is Tos the most terribly designed mmo is history?

Why is using ones own engine a bad thing?
You do realize that tons of gamecompanies out there use their own engines, which often are based on very old engines but have been updated alot, right? Or they write their own modern engines.

Using ones own engine is not a bad thing per se.
It only becomes a bad thing if the engine has no good performance or does not fit the game very well.

Like in ToS’s case, right?

The wrost… no

One of the wrost… yes

I feel like corsairs maybe are meant to pick c3 or something and in rank 9 they will get something great, but then the corsairs who picked murmillo will be unhappy. So probably corsair3>shinobi>“some great rank 9 class that synergizes”. Even if they picked murmillo it wouldnt be so bad though.

I hear sadhu is getting some buffs like oob attack does 200% magic damage and some other things. So add in the attribute and it can be 400% magic damage with oob attack. Not sure if this will make it good, but better than it was.

I won’t deny that the engine is not optimized for TOSs needs, however the OP made it sound like having a housemade engine at all is a negative thing and that the only viable option for a game developer is to use an already existing modern engine.

I’ve played a bunch of randy korean mmo’s in my lifetime, but they were all through prevalent korean publishers. I can’t say i’ve experienced the nitty gritty world of mmo’s, but for games in general, I have.

The biggest problem is simply expectation. Those crappy games did not have anything to live up to.

edit: oops, this is my other account  I am OP.

ToS’s engine is its foundation, and with all the technical issues they can’t seem to get rid of, it’s easy to understand why. The game is fundamentally flawed in both design and functionality.

You do realize the reason why they added team xp was to give players something to do after they’ve reached max lvl right? I don’t consider it a mechanic that should be utilized simply out of spite for terrible game design. It’s just another way IMC is bandaiding the flaws in the game. Because it’s cheaper to stop a leak with tape then it is to replace the pipe.

In my opinion, and I’m sure MOST people share this opinion, role playing games are just that, role playing. By trying to divert our attention from lack of things to do at endgame, and remedying the lack of endgame by promoting countless alts, it ceases to be a role playing game. It instead becomes a game of rushing through content as fast as possible to get that team xp as high as possible, thus artificially elongating your time spent playing.

And as I mentioned, this game’s quest/grinding is so boring, creating alts and redoing bogus content was the reason I stopped playing in the first place. I understand, I don’t need to like or play this game, but I enjoy healthy discussion, especially in game design.

OMG, the guy I used to work for literally brought in a Korean manager with the IQ of 80 to run a mid-high end restaurant for $8 an hour. And the IQ of 80 is not an exaggeration, if I’ve ever known a true idiot, this was him. And yes, he was family.

ToS is far from a terribly designed MMO in general. I think what many people here forget to realize is the Korean culture. They are quite resistant to advice, let alone change. When you can show them what’s completely wrong with not just evidence, but evidence that shows without doubt a flawed thinking or procedure, they will then investigate and try to make it better.

If you’re going to complain to IMC about a problem, be prepared to put together more than a report, because any lack of information will often result in (we require information, even if you fully translate it to Korean).

Or they delete your thread and pretend it never happened. Like what happened to a certain addon producing individual. So there goes the validity of that statement given IMC’s track record.

He basically did the work for them, which IMC was glad to claim and then say they have a superior product.

I’m still waiting on my fixes on a few skills and stuff that cease to function properly in the game. No patch notes, so I know there’s work to be done. This is where I look, because that would tell me if these developers are capable of fixing such issues.

I won’t comment on Korean culture but the points about the game itself are so true. However, saying it is the worst is hyperbole. It’s true: we had and do have higher expectations because we don’t want to see the potential here continue burning in the dumpster fire it is currently. Hence, the rise of the “black knights” and hue brigade.

Maybe if we shout loud enough, things will get better. But it’s not easy when the fundamentals are so flawed.

What does Korean culture have to do with whether or not ToS is a terribly designed MMO?

…especially when even the Koreans don’t like it very much.

Nope, although ToS is plagued with a number of issues like FPS, class balancing, content balancing, it is far from being the most terribly designed/implemented mmo.

OP just hasn’t seen or played really bad MMOs with combat that is dependent on the player’s computer power. Basically if you have a computer that powerful you will level 3 to 5 times faster than other players cuz you get to cast spells faster, recover faster and monster spawn faster.
