Is Tos the most terribly designed mmo is history?

Hey i used to play that. It was awesome. Mainly because of the community and if you like actual roleplaying in the game, that was the best game for it.

I actually logged into it a couple months ago. Was dead. It is pretty bad now especially since it came out almost 20 years ago.

Well, i dont get 60 fps in alot of games when there is alot of people, but the difference is this game stutters. The stuttering makes it alot worse. Even 5 fps in another game feels smoother than this game at 20 in towns.

To ba fair…it’s bad for a 2015/2016 game. Design wise it’s lacking many modern MMO features and technically speaking it is unable to render 60fps when there is action on screen even if you have a 980TI. I mean…wtf.

It seems to me TOS does not preload frequently used assets and only read them from disk when needed. Also it has some sort of bloat or memory leak it goes up to 3GB of ram usage over time and just freezes/crash after hitting a limit. -_-

i see (sorry miss it)
yeah theres a lot of cool class at lower rank hate to see it being useless at higher rank up too

For a non-indie MMO?
Yes.

Where you there for the time when their cash shop was selling everything for 1 silver. That was some awesome stupid ■■■■. Also when sorcerers were healing for billions.

I have played it back when people still actually RP’d in like Deoch 30 and then came back a couple years ago to see what it was now. The title of the thread is “is ToS the worse MMO” and it’s not. But it is definitely a shell of what it could be just like Darkages due to bad companies.

In terms of the jobs within each of the four base classes (Swordsman, Wizard, Cleric, Archer) relative to other jobs within that same tree, R8 didn’t really help any nonmeta builds and only helped meta builds, with some meta builds (elememe but… really ANY wizard besides full support ones) being destroyed too. Certainly swordsmen are now better than wizards, but within the swordsman tree, the same builds that were the best swordsman builds preR8 are still the best builds post R8 for the most part, with a few being utterly destroyed. Rarely maybe a couple rose up a few tiers within the swordsman tree (just maybe fencer, basically) but that’s about it.

If anything, all R8 has done is narrow down the meta MORE. There are now less viable builds for the new end game content than there were for the old content across all of the four base classes (swords, archer, cleric, wizard).

The biggest lesson to learn here is that whether you go meta or not, there’s a hefty chance you will get IMC’d. Which is one that most people have realized and yet another reason why many are quitting even after the R8 patch.

I give you this, Corsair was given no justice. Like Sadhu, I feel IMC generally just forgot to really care about what it could build off of. The Rapier-Gun changes awhile back reinforce people going that route, but it’s such a loss of DPS going to a Rank 6 class it’s pretty insulting.

Nice statement, now add in 600k mobs and gachas for ultimate IMCization.
Or the instance vouchers further destroying possibility to run dungeons by reducing the amount of players that do run them.

I wouldn’t say its the worse mmo, although if we narrow it down to other games with multiplayer action gameplay top down perspective utilizing skill builds like Diablo, Titan Quest, or Path of Exile, saying its the worse out of those games wouldn’t be a stretch.

Why is using ones own engine a bad thing?
You do realize that tons of gamecompanies out there use their own engines, which often are based on very old engines but have been updated alot, right? Or they write their own modern engines.

Using ones own engine is not a bad thing per se.
It only becomes a bad thing if the engine has no good performance or does not fit the game very well.

Like in ToS’s case, right?

The wrost… no

One of the wrost… yes

I feel like corsairs maybe are meant to pick c3 or something and in rank 9 they will get something great, but then the corsairs who picked murmillo will be unhappy. So probably corsair3>shinobi>“some great rank 9 class that synergizes”. Even if they picked murmillo it wouldnt be so bad though.

I hear sadhu is getting some buffs like oob attack does 200% magic damage and some other things. So add in the attribute and it can be 400% magic damage with oob attack. Not sure if this will make it good, but better than it was.

I won’t deny that the engine is not optimized for TOSs needs, however the OP made it sound like having a housemade engine at all is a negative thing and that the only viable option for a game developer is to use an already existing modern engine.

I’ve played a bunch of randy korean mmo’s in my lifetime, but they were all through prevalent korean publishers. I can’t say i’ve experienced the nitty gritty world of mmo’s, but for games in general, I have.

The biggest problem is simply expectation. Those crappy games did not have anything to live up to.

edit: oops, this is my other account  I am OP.

ToS’s engine is its foundation, and with all the technical issues they can’t seem to get rid of, it’s easy to understand why. The game is fundamentally flawed in both design and functionality.

You do realize the reason why they added team xp was to give players something to do after they’ve reached max lvl right? I don’t consider it a mechanic that should be utilized simply out of spite for terrible game design. It’s just another way IMC is bandaiding the flaws in the game. Because it’s cheaper to stop a leak with tape then it is to replace the pipe.

In my opinion, and I’m sure MOST people share this opinion, role playing games are just that, role playing. By trying to divert our attention from lack of things to do at endgame, and remedying the lack of endgame by promoting countless alts, it ceases to be a role playing game. It instead becomes a game of rushing through content as fast as possible to get that team xp as high as possible, thus artificially elongating your time spent playing.

And as I mentioned, this game’s quest/grinding is so boring, creating alts and redoing bogus content was the reason I stopped playing in the first place. I understand, I don’t need to like or play this game, but I enjoy healthy discussion, especially in game design.

OMG, the guy I used to work for literally brought in a Korean manager with the IQ of 80 to run a mid-high end restaurant for $8 an hour. And the IQ of 80 is not an exaggeration, if I’ve ever known a true idiot, this was him. And yes, he was family.
