They are all there sitting still all day long at the exact location of the Boss spawn. They attack any monsters that enters their line of sight.

If you hold your attack key, you keep swinging the weapon
For archers they can set up Target Lock (Ctrl key on keyboard scheme) which then automatically (by the game, not a bot program) targets any enemy around when attacking.
