Maybe it’s just me, but I think that my items go down in durability pretty fast. I don’t mind the durability feature, but I think there would be more incentive to upgrade your gear if it could add Durability to an item. Maybe +5 per upgrade or stack it according to item level.
This also plays into the idea that upgrading your armor/weapon not only makes it stronger, but harder to break! 
Plus I can stay in a field longer…
