I need help on video card suggestion for TOS

I plan to replace my video card so I can play TOS smoothly(especially for GVGs),

My budget is around $300~$500, but the lower the price better( Since I am on budget mode atm unless I have no choice).

Any suggestions? my current RAM is around 4gb, do i need to replace that as well?

ps: currently using AMD Radeon HD 7400

it is somehow not video card issue. imagine i have nVidia GTX 780 Ti 3GB RAM (DDR5). i still get ■■■■ FPS  it is developer’s software rendering problem

i have a core i5 4690, 16GB DDR3 PC1600 ram… i have a decent computer, still it works out very suck…

The game is not optimized yet, they did some optimization but it is not the final one i guess.

What is the memory of your GPU? You could add more 4GB on memory, your processor is what? If its an i3 you may have problems due to bottleneck on the system, if you can upgrade your processor better.

With your budget i guess you can do the upgrades and still have some money.

My GPU memory is at uhh 2535mb and my processor is I5…

Wait a second there, your GPU have 2.5GB of memory? If that is the case you are fine, i5 is ok, then just upgrade the memory, add more 4 or 8GB.

This is the specs:

May have to be a weeeee bit more specific as i5’s can range from 2.20-3.90 GHz without overclocking.

I’m still not entirely sure too if ToS utilizes any more than two cores.

Download this and check again, i don’t trust that page on windows sometimes it doesn’t show right because it mix with some sort of swap memory that the driver create.

Just go on Sumary (i think it is the first page when you open the program) and check there, if it still show as 2535 MB (or 2.5GB) then its fine your GPU have good memory to work.

Hmmm, i doubt ToS use more than 1 core, its a 32 bit software, unless it is a multi-plataform like some games/software i saw. But the processor speed indeed is a concern, mine is 2.6GHz without speedstep (i don’t use that, cause some instability on some games).

ew nvm windows lied to me:

I guess i need to replace it after all.

Nop, you don’t need to, 1GB is good, i would guess you will only need to add more memory to be on a safe side.

Yeah and I highly doubt a DirectX 12 requirement in ToS’ future =P

I still pat myself on my back 8 years ago when I built this machine lol I had the choice between some quad-core processors and this Phenom Black @3.6… even though it was a dual-core I chose it since I’m a minimalist and like to keep a strict eye on my processes lol That being said it’s still very good at not being the bottleneck in a lot of games I play since I don’t multi-task when I play a fullscreen application XD

Although I should really upgrade about now too.

@carloscolanta Hmm if your mobo allows it you may consider crossfire, since you’re looking to spend some money anyway. Unless the snippet at the top is already showing two 7400 cards XD

add more memory and if u really want to get a new video card, i’m using a
7870FX and the game runs just fine

I still miss my old i7 first generation (LGA1366) i had it on a Gygabyte Assassin with 8GB and 2 320GB HDD in raid, but during a moving my uncle let water drop inside the case and i got ■■■■■■ up :frowning:

Well this laptop is fine for most stuff i play, actually, i’m yet to find a game i have that don’t work here lol. But i do suffer bottleneck sometimes, i don’t know if i can upgrade the processor of this thing without the necessity of soldering something because of voltage, since it is a Clevo motherboard lol.

idk why is it showing x2, I really only have one xD

@Nirimetus alright thanks for the answers

That is from the software showing the name and the ID string sent by the GPU and driver. Its normal, when you have 2 cards, it shows on top on a separated part.

I’ve toasted too many laptops to ever want to mess with them again lol 8+ hours to take everything apart and try to make changes just isn’t my cup of tea and I suck at it lol I’ll stick with a tower because swapping and fixing things there is a bit more up my alley lol so hats off to you for even considering it because that’s a bit out of my element XD

@carloscolanta one of the best things about AMD cards is that you will notice a sizable performance increase if you crossfire them. As a general rule of thumb (of course not always), but equal value/generation AMD cards do not often outperform their Nvidia counterpart in a single card arena. But if you crossfire those AMD cards, and SLI the Nvidia ones, they often pan out to be just about even.

What this means in short is that if you’re just planning on using one card it’s sometimes best to go Nvidia, but if you plan to use two then your options open up because it brings AMD right back into the competition. And it means that the in most crossfire setups will have a higher performance gain comparatively.

Like…

in a 1 point system we’ll say one AMD card has .5 value, and two AMD cards in crossfire have 1 combined point. In Nvidia one card will be .75 points, and in SLI will have 1 combined point, making each brand just about even when using two cards. With your AMD though you stand to gain a lot of performance by adding another card xD

Yeah well i only changed 1 memory module since one of the original burned and added a second SSD so i could install more games LOL. And i already once dropped soda on top of it once too, lucky it didn’t had time to enter somewhere LOL.

So far it is stable, even more now under Win10, i really liked Win7 but Win10 is doing wonder on this laptop, even some old ones here at home are much more stable and faster.

I see I see, I just checked my MOBO and sadly it only has one slot :<

I’m just waiting for the day when I come home to find one of my cats sitting on the desk with my Mt Dew graveyard of half-empty cans and stares at me while pawing one on to my tower below.

I know this will happen. It’s just a matter of when lol

@carloscolanta Well, I’m in agreement that 8gb is something you should definitely have, so aside from that… I guess you have a couple choices. In most cases a strong singl gpu is favorable to xfire/sli according to most (I haven’t ever had issues with stuttering etc that some people report)… so you could go with some ram and a new card if you really like, or a new mobo and double up on your card for cheap too.

For me though it’s always about longevity. If I buy something then I don’t want to replace it for years. Like I said, my rig is 8 years old and still able to do quite a bit. If you end up running crossfire you can use different cards but may run into some issues if they aren’t identical (SLI if I recall they have to be identical, but don’t quote me on that, may be outdated info on that one lol). Getting another card for cheap may not be your best long-term investment XD

So cheap though lol
