Hypothetical : What if this game released as P2P?

I’m wondering how the launch and just general running of things would have gone if the game was advertised and released as a P2P game.

Say, $10-15 a month. They could have a free trial type deal where you can get to level 20 or something at most and heavily restrict chat privileges so gold spammers can’t utilize it.

You take away all the retrictions from paying subscribers and you don’t need to worry about monetizing things, and every single players’ contribution per month is at the very least $10.

I don’t know, I feel like this might have been a much better situation for everyone.

i would still play it and i would prefer it to be P2P with a little cosmic cash shop for costumes etc.

and beside they are testing if alot of these things should be in the game

Game would be way more smooth and enjoyable.

It would die.

The current market is now in F2P models and micro transactions. No one really wants to pay monthly anymore and its shown that more people tend to spend more in a month with smaller transactions than they do with a 10-15 dollar amount.

The entire point of F2P is that you get as many people as you can in and then show them all the neat stuff that they want to have for a buck here, two dollars there, fifty cents over in that area ect ect. Before they know it they spent about 20 dollars that month getting accessories, cosmetics, storage space, mounts, pets or whatever else.

Now this is where people ■■■■ it up. Companies decide that they should squeeze it for all its worth and then the game dies due to that. What this game is doing right now is retarded. Trading is abysmal and premium is a joke.

Yes I would pay to play, like I said I think it’s kind of a win, win situation.

Subscription-based is synonymous with scamming to me, so I would stop playing immediately

If it was b2p instead, I’d get all up in that and play forever

Right you would, but the vast majority would not.

Its been proven that the new model is in F2P with micro transactions. People dont want to pay monthly because the majority have a small attention span.

It would die if it was a monthly thing. WoW only does well because its still riding out on its former glory. FFXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Is doing ok because it has name brand recognition and using assets from FF11 which everyone loved. Plus apparently everyone loves the cat girls due to weebs.

Its not a viable market for games like this.

Yes, Most are going to the FTP model and there are some counter arguments about why f2p is good. One is if you want to play with your friends but they can’t afford it, so the friend is left out.
But in the end, FTP model doesn’t work and it always lead to bad mortals of exploitation of players. Plus, the game becomes all about what makes the game get money rather than the game itself and all the time spend will be on what makes money and not on game play, fixing bugs, etc because it is needed to keep the game going. It’s sad to see F2P becoming a new thing and that a lot of games are going to this horrible model. I know even if it is making a lot of money I bet you that only a small amount will go to making the game better rather then making things to get money.

btw, FF is like the WoW of Japan.

Even Square Enix have stated they had no idea ffxiv would become so popular.

Back on topic:

In today’s market P2P games die out faster than they were made. People who play p2p mmo’s have a very high expectation of what this new shiny toy has to be in order for the company to get their £10 a month, to rip them away from their friends / accomplishments inside said game and start again from scratch. Very few games who launch as P2P are able to do this and so the players jump back to what they had before., thus causing new shiny game to rot.

This has led to developers just making their games free to play right of the bat, and it’s working. Constant stream of new players due to no pay wall to cough up small micro transactions = more money.

The truth of it is that free to play makes more money for the companies. Just have a look at this:

This isn’t just about mmo’s anymore either, just have a look at the likes of Steam or Origin. Pages upon pages of low cost instant gratification indie games and only a handful of good quality AAA games. And I’m not even going to touch on early access games…

Wildstar tried p2p. Hype was much bigger, lotsa more players. Went f2p soon after.

nope it wouldnt imo…

different games different market. same with runescape…

Runescape has daily 50k + people online and is still going strong imo. and is p2p.

wow is dying. and ffxiv is just a full bucket og shameless crap content

because the game was a fat failur… it has no content at all. no new dungeons, raids and the slowest content update. plus promised content update every month which they did not do

Wildstar was a great game killed by bad management and wrongly picked gamer population. They listened to people about nostalgia 40-man content and failed miserably.
Because ToS has shitloads of content, dungeons and raids to lure people into paying on monthly basis.
FF and WoW have a trademark. And population of wow is always low before the expansion hits. Wait for the new expansion, and numbers will skyrocket again. The force of trademark.

Except F2P brings in the biggest complainers as well. People who feel the game should give them ‘everything’ without them having to put in anything.

Also I’m pretty sure there are a lot of P2P games still out there that are doing extremely well. WoW is still P2P and regardless of how you feel about it, its still doing well. FFXIV:HW is another P2P thats doing extremely well. There are others as well. Heck Ultima Online is still P2P and has a following that keeps it running and receiving updates. I’m pretty sure all of these also have a cash shop where you can buy ‘additional’ items/mounts etc.

That being said I think its a little too late for it to go back and become a P2P.

yep… alot of the kittens complain to much… it’s just how those kittens are

hmm, I wouldn’t say P2P games like WoW or RO failed…they just got really old with their technology and trying to come up with things and I know FF will end up the same way but I know Enix prob already predicted when it will die out and have plans for another game. Now a days they go to free to play because it makes more money and they have more cows to milk. I mean it is pretty attractive to see FREE TO PLAY except in small text it says something like it require you to play to win.

nope it failed cause of how they failed to deliever…

the game had terrible performence. barely any content.

and legion will only bring people back for 3 months and wow is dead again

meanwhile TOS will prob stay alive longer cause its not easy to get the items u want

wow is just milking money atm… nothing new until legion and even then its only 3 months before people leave again

There was plenty of content for the 1% “hardcore” population.
I had tons of fun. 99% of people didn’t tho. Hence - wrongly targeted gamer population. 1% won’t hold the numbers of money made.
