[Guide] Swordsman's Battle Manual (All classes) - By Cathexis

Mmm, if you would rather make that change then it could work, although you will be pretty much forsaking the Barbarian circle as you are not really getting anything out of it.

Another problem is that you will not be able to use 1H spears until you reach Dragoon, which isn’t a deal breaker but would require you to switch between Sword+Shield and 2H spear often.

So if you are willing to make that trade then I think it could work. It is not going to be as “efficient” as the normal route, but if you would rather not make another character then it is fine.

Wait, what? What build are referencing to in here?

You could take Corsair instead for PvP (Iron Hook) and some PvE utility (Jolly Roger). Plus Dust Devil as an extra soft-CC skill.

I wouldn’t recommend placing too many points into Cartar Stroke because it is not that good at higher levels due to it’s charging time. Usually it is left between level 3 and 5, but anything more than that isn’t as good as you could use those points elsewhere.

If anything, I would say to take those extra points you have in there to get at least 1 point into Moulinet.

As answered by @xechidna, it doesn’t scale with level. The problem of leaving it at level 1 is that it is going to take much longer to work reliably, as without points in it the only factors that make it stronger are your STR and Character Level. So leaving it at level 1 implies that you are expecting to use it at higher levels rather than low ones (which is fine).

Do you mean actual values or ratio? As in 1 STR : 1 DEX and some CON?

I think that is fine. You will have plenty of flexibility at higher levels to switch your build around if you feel the need to get more STR, DEX or CON.

  • Getting at least level 1 Moulinet to add another skill to your rotation.
  • Some people like to have Vertical Slash at level 1, others at 5. I think that since you will have Fencer in your build then level 1 is better on the long run or maybe even 0, as those points could be better used on other skills.
This is assuming you take Highlander C3 too.
  • You can trade the Highlander C3 circle for Corsair if you would like to have an extra good tool for PvP (Iron Hook).
  • You can also trade the Fencer C2 rank for Doppelsoeldner C1, as it would give you Cyclone and cover the AoE weakness of Fencer.
But if you prefer the consistent variety of damage then Fencer C2 is the way to go.

Other than that, looks pretty good.

Bosses in this game in general are not very difficult. You have different types:

  • Quest Bosses: Really easy to kill.
  • Dungeon Bosses: It is better to dodge their magic by moving out of their casting zone (most of them can be blocked with a shield too).
  • World Bosses: Just giant meat shields that occasionally deal some magic damage, but same as dungeon ones it is better to just move out of their casting zone so you don’t take damage (many attacks can be blocked with a shield too).

So I wouldn’t worry much about magic in bosses, although Crown still helps against the ones that like to frequently cast magic but bring down the dungeon/world bosses is a group effort rather than something that you accomplish mostly on your own.

You can still do without CON into much higher levels, if you know what you are doing. Adding more CON is usually for:

  • PvP or GvG builds
  • Players who have a higher ping than average (CON gives them more breathing room due to mistakes caused by ping).
  • Players who are just starting with the game and would prefer to have an extra room of protection as they get used to the game.

So it depends on how comfortable you feel while playing the game. If you feel the need to add CON, then you most likely should do it. But if you are getting by without any problems, then you don’t have to worry too much about it unless you are planning on doing PvP.

I would say Corsair->Fencer->Doppelsoeldner.

The points into DEX are mainly for Accuracy, as you will be facing people with high Evasion during PvP / GvG so you need a good amount of it to reliably hit most people if not everyone during those scenarios.

And even though you have Finestra level 5, that doesn’t hold up at higher levels, even if you use gems. So you will need to compensate with some points into DEX.

Final, that is difficult because you could switch many things around on your equipment to fit different scenarios.

But since you want high CON, then I would say something like:

4 CON : 2 DEX : 1 STR

@Cathexis Hi, I’m currently Rank 5 in this build.
Swordsman C1 -> Peltasta C1 -> Barbarian C2 -> Corsair C1 -> Fencer C1 -> Templar C1
I wonder if I should go with STR build or DEX build

Hi @Cathexis or anyone with suggestions/advices,

This is my current build up till rank 5

Unfortunately, I did not go Peltasta during rank 2 and now the further I progress the feeling of regretfulness increases. Why do I want to do this you may ask? for exactly all the same reason going Peltasta at rank 2 even thought I’m rank 5 now. I really feel Swash Buckling and Guardian is almost essential. Both are skills that never fall off.

Some of my priorities.
Mainly PVE AOE oriented - doing fine now
Able to ‘tank’ for dungeons/missions without healer - not possible (seen many done it with c1 Peltasta)
Solo PVE until 200+ effectively - not very effective due to lack of Swash Buckling

Now my main concern/question is that will my damage suffer since I will have only c1 for either Fencer/Doppel at rank 7 due to the skill levels being cap at 5/5.

Something like this if I went Fencer at rank 7

I’m open to rank 7 Doppel suggestion as well.

Thank you for reading.

Thank you so much again for your reply… i will add some points into DEX so. Please can you give me a formula to calcule how can i do now that i put some points like i told you.
I take Tos base stat calculator, and from zero i get this… do you know that is correct: SoD Templar Build
Finally do you know what is the maximum actually? And how much finals bonus points we have? (About that, where can i put the bonus points? Follow the proportion 4/2/1, or i must put all in one stat?)

Thanks again, one more time!

Destinado.

Can some1 advice me for best possible (pve only) build to pair with fs chaplain, thanx in advance.

if you are always playing together with a chaplain, you can try a dual wielding corsair. chaplain’s AA buffs are powerful to beef up corsair AA.

but with that in mind I don’t know if Toy hammer DWA corsair with chaplain buff is better or a finestra spear DWA corsair+chaplain buffs.

Hey Cathexis, did you manage to confirm doppel’s deeds of valor’s stacks Not resetting if you can achieve 100% uptime on the buff?

Also, I have been told that punish can be tapped like stabbing on an opponent that’s been knocked down and does not go onto cooldown, is that true?

Riven and Vayne are champions with probably the biggest amount of changes among the history of LoL.

I’ve not played for half a year, so I don’t know how they nerfed Ashe, she was just OK after buff and some slight nerfs, don’t know why she got another nerf.

Balancing games is really hard process, especially if you compare ToS to LoL, it’s really hard for developers to understand what should they change.

Thanks for your reply cathexis!

Question: since im going fencer, isnt Squire required since for repairs and wep maint?
Or it doesnt outweighs Jolly roger from corsair1?

Edit: im the swashbuckling type and helps people on dungeons and pve type

Additional edit: corsairs are a dps class right? Considering i got pelasta 3? Would that make me weaker? :frowning:

Do anyone here have a great build for Corsair ?
It’s kinda a cool class to play XD
Thanks in advance

Hello everyone.

I think I could use some help with my build. It is a Fencer, focused on PvE and PvP. I tried to balance it in every aspect of the game in order to make it a solid character, but to be honest I have absolutely no idea if it is good or just bad.

Here it is: http://www.tosbase.com/tools/skill-simulator/build/rndd7u62av/

Swordsman:

  • Thrust: Level 1 because I have no source of Pierce damage until later - unless I decide to use a Spiked Mace.

  • Bash: Level 3 for the attribute (Knockdown).

  • Concentrate and Gung Ho: Level 5 because why not?

  • Pain Barrier: Level 1 because I had 1 skill point remaining.

Peltasta:

  • Umbo Blow: Level 5. No need to explain why.

  • Rim Blow: Level 4. Supposed to be 5, but I needed 1 point on Guardian and the damage is not that great anyway.

  • Swash Buckling: Level 5.

  • Guardian: Level 1 because I want the attribute (more evasion).

Barbarian 1 and 2:

  • Cleave: Level 10, no-brainer.

  • Helm Chopper: Level 5. Could be 5, but I wanted Wacry and Frenzy at level 5, even though it is a reliable source of Strike damage - which I am lacking.

  • Warcry and Frenzy: Level 5. I think they both are going to work well with my build, even without any attribute.

  • Seism: Level 5 because DAMAGE.

Corsair 1 and 2:

  • Jolly Roger: Level 8. I was thinking 10, but I wanted Iron Hook and Keel Hauling for PvP, and at level 8 it has great utility anyway.

  • Iron Hook: Level 1. PvP.

  • Keel Hauling: Level 1. PvP.

  • Dust Devil: Level 10.

  • Double Weapon Assault: Level 5.

  • Hexen Dropper: Level 5, also no-brainer.

Fencer:

  • Lunge: Level 5 for the damage and utility.

  • Sept Etoiles: Level 5. No need to justify.

  • Attaque Coquille: Level 4 - wanted 5, but Flanconnade has nice utility.

  • Flanconnade: Level 1, for the utility.

Most of the time people go for Barbarian 3 when building a Fencer, which is nice, but I wanted Double Weapon Assault, Hexen Dropper and some utility for PvE and PvP on my build. I know I could go for Highlander 2 instead of Barbarian 2, or even Highlander 3, but I would be lacking AoE and an easier life on PvE by doing so. Also, Highlander 3 has Skull Swing which is pretty damn cool, but as a Fencer, I would be able to use Lunge and Flanconnade, making my target vulnerable to Slash and Pierce damage, respectively, which might be as effective as the Armor Break status. I am going to miss Bleeding, by the way.

Doppelsöldner is an option for rank 7, I know, but I also think that Fencer is more useful on PvP, and has good potential for PvE as well. Anyway, I chose Fencer because I think it is great filler for my build, covering any weakness I had previously. The problem is: It was available on Rank 6, so maybe I am wasting an entire rank - even though there is not anything really great to go with (a sword) Corsair on Rank 7 as Corsair 3 is terrible. Actually, I hope that Corsair 2 + Fencer will not fall of when they launch rank 8, which is the main reason why I am focusing on generic utility for my build.

So… My biggest doubt is: how hard is my build going to fall off late game? Am I going to be lacking on PvE? PvP? AoE? Single target damage?

Talking about damage, until when Barbarian is useful?

How should I stat my character?

And last question: Leather or Plate? Maybe both…?

Thank you.

what you put on your skills are standard, but you might want dust devil 8 and jolly roger 10, you’re already corsair c2, abuse the looting as much as you can! also dont forget to get venier it would help you a lot with only c1 fencer.

I think barbarian is useful forever, helm chop and seism can stun, cleave can give you something similar to a level 5 finestra, lunge boosts seism

also i put lv 4 on guardian and lv 1 on rim blow, I prefer the duration bonus guardian gives than a skill I very rarely use. in fact I never use it at all now it’s just a waste of sp unless you’re talking about pvp uses, still lv 1 is enough

edit: when rank 8 pops out and you got no choices you can try fencer 2 corsair 2, preparation>coquille>hexen might be a very good burst

Ty Cathexis for your answer for my 1st question (best spear 1h I can get, yoy say Brandish, I still farm that recipe tho haha XD, right now I have Khasti Spear aka “Brandish for the poor ;O;”)
Now I have a second question <3
What Shield is good? or at least to where I need to point? I have currently Aias, seems pretty solid (also I look for Emperor Shield and Sage Wall, both looks cool for that magic/elemental damage) I’m curretly sw/pel/hoplite x3/Doppel going for dragoon, I really love the shield and spear stance (but I want to use spear+shield and 2h spear (maybe elements?)).
Also, I really don’t know if there any set that could help more at the end content, cause for what I’ve seen, the damage become massive in magic damage, to the point I really considering have both plate and cloth mastery (maybe persuing the last XD) What can I expect to have my priorities on path? Ty <3

Hello there. Excuse me for bothering you but it seems you have a fairly good amount of knowledge about the Swordsman class and i would like to ask for your advice.

Currently i’m a level 145 Corsair C1 going to Fencer soon. My current worry however is that i somehow ■■■■■■ up by choosing Swordsman C2 instead of Peltasta. So i basically don’t have that “one good class” all Swordsman should have for level 200+ content. What i was thinking however is that instead of rerolling, i could just pick peltasta c1 after Fencer to get the “Swashbuckling” skill. However, i will sacrifice Corsair C2 or Fencer C2 for that. I really don’t want to reroll but if i really have to, i’ll do it.

TL;DR:I ■■■■■■ up by not picking Peltasta at Rank 2. Is Peltasta ABSOLUTELY mandatory for party play content level 200+?

I’d like to dispute the PvP-build only statement here.
Shield Bash is a 2 overheat strike skill that has THE fastest cast time out of just about any swordie skill, while doing more damage than Targe Smash for the same Skill Point investment.

On top of that, they even increased its damage further on KR (though of course, we don’t know when that change will come here), so if building a Rodel for damage (which should be the default anyway. They’re a crowd control DPS class, not a tank or anything), it really should be maxed no matter what.

Targe Smash isnt even your real main skill once you go C2. Shield Bash is, although since Targe got the no-knockback attribute it’s a bit more valuable now. The knockback on it without the attribute as well as delay after using it with knockback is absolutely horrid. It really helped the skill a lot.

well if fencer is your goal peltasta’s swashbuckling isn’t the only thing you will worry about, that includes pelt’s guardian attribute which gives you an 18% evasion. you could reach near 1k evasion if you went high dex build, that’s not even counting lunge. but yeah you can get more con or str since you have lunge support anyway, though thats only the case if you got the pelt attribute.

mandatory for party play, if you wanna main tank without too much hassle, yes.
also if parties are looking for tanks specifically and see that you have at least 1 pelt you’d easily get the invite in

on your question about rerolling idk really, everyone might have to reroll thanks to the game not having circle resets. but if you got the time feel free to do it, the attribute is really too good to miss at the moment as well as swash buckling, Cathexis can help you decide better on this matter I guess

Ah…For the love of god damn it. Well, i guess it was expected for me that the only choice is to reroll. Swordsman C2 is garbage. Even though you said you don’t know really, you still have helped me settle this matter at hand.

Much appreciated for your input, and i thank you for your time.

That’s true, but Targe Smash has 3 overheat. So it will still grant more damage. Also it deals double damage on frozen, so it’s even better.

Though Shield Bash also worth maxing, since it’s still better than most of other Rodelero skills.

Swordsman C2 can be turned into C3 for PvP build. But it’s garbage by itself.

Also it’s complete garbage in PvE.

@Cathexis or anyone
I’m planning to make combat Templar. Do you think this build will work?
Swordsman > Peltasta > Hoplite C3 > Doppel > Templar with High STR stats.
Thanks in advance.
