[Guide] Swordsman's Battle Manual (All classes) - By Cathexis

I think it is a pretty nice build, but untested.

It is actually one of the builds I had in mind since it was confirmed that Dragoon had the attributes of 1H and 2H spears.

The idea is that while you might not deal as much damage as the Hoplite route, you will be able to stat the Dragoon differently and use an evasion build or high accuracy one with great tools for PvP and excellent mobbing in general.

If you want to be a pioneer then try this build, otherwise if you would rather play it safe then go with Doppelsoeldner C2.

Haha let me be the first one then. I like Dragoon’s costume

Hey man thanks a lot for the advice!

Hi, I am wondering about the interaction between Gung Ho (swordsman) and (Guardian) Peltasta. Since it cancels each other out wouldnt it be better to max either one of their attributes instead of both?

If i want to benefit from the 18% evasion from Guardian’s attribute upgrade should i not waste anytime in the Gung Ho skill/attribute or am i misunderstanding this concept?

Why not both?

You use Gung Ho for when you need or can use more damage and you use Guardian for when evasion would be more helpful than some extra damage.

I see your point. Im fairly new and was thinking that concentrate would be a better attribute to max out first(silver constraint) since it can stack with guardian; and that i would always want guardian to be active since 18% evasion seems like a lot to me.

If you have a token active, you are going to be leveling up Gung Ho and Concentrate at the same time.

But if you don’t have a token, it is correct, you first level up Concentrate then Gung Ho. But don’t take too long, you should aim to have both of them maxed out before level 90~100.

Stat Wise, how should i go ? I am Hoplite now and considering taking Catapracht or should i build a Hoplite C3?
XD
Oh, so the attributes need to be leveled up too?
I am so doom T.T

Wait, what? You can go either, both options are fine, pick the one you like the most. Read the guide for stat distributions and possible builds.

Yeah, but if you haven’t don’t worry too much, you can always start leveling them up and catch up.

Hey Cathexis,

First of all nice job replying to everyone! I have been going hardcore into research and I want to make a unique melee build but I have a few questions that I feel you maybe the only one who can answer if you would let me pick your brain. I am a PvP oriented player.

 1. Why is everyone taking Dragoon over Doppl C2 in their builds for damage? (Also from a pvp point of view).

 2. I was going to go the typical Hop 1, Cata 3, Drag 1, but I feel it wont be good enough damage (since Cata 3 Rush only has 632 base damage) and dragoon seems to be only for single large cooldown big hits?

I would like your opinion for pvp on my build as well. Hoplite C2 - Cata C1 - Dopple C2. The idea is to look for an opening or impale someone away on my mount and when i get in the middle of everyone or to my target to Steel Charge knock them over and unmount and cyclone on top of them and use Long stride to jump back on them if the blink away. Can also run back to my mount if i need to. I want to do this cause from what I see people are a bit less cautious around a Cata due to his lack of big damage and I want to use that against them.

Only thing is I have been wracking my brain if that will be okay and what kind of stat distribution should I use. I wanted to go high Dex for cyclone crit bursting in pvp, but I am hearing High Strength is better for overall damage, but is it better for cyclone pvp burst damage? I know I need some CON and I am still figuring it out, but what should I do? I want the best pvp Cyclone burst I can get.

I want the opinion of someone like you who is really experienced in all of this.

Thanks a ton in advance I enjoy reading all your posts. You’re really knowledgeable in swordsmen and it shows with a passion.

Crap forgot to mention. BTW I am using spears (preferably 2 handed) in that build. CYCLONE SPEAR!

Crap forgot forgot to ask about cloth armor for pvp. Since I’ll be using Deeds of Valor would it be better to go cloth armor for the magic defense in pvp?

Thanks Cathexis. Appreciate your reply

May i ask why swordman circle3 damage falls off late game?? Double-strike is not that good? I was planning to make a doppelsoeldner 2handed sword for pvp.

@Cathexis I read the other topic made by you reviewing all swordsman classes. And I quote some part of you text.
Hoplite
• Circle 1: Decent (6/10)
• Circle 2: Amazing (10/10)
• Circle 3: Bad (5/10)

C3 is pretty bad, it only gets Throwing Spear with a long cool-down and unreliable CC.
Since I gonna get hoplite c3 and throwing spear has no longer cooldown, what are you opnion about this skill now and the rate you gaved to hoplite c3 still the same or you think different with this change? sorry my bad english

I think most people choose Dragoon because of the costume or the concept of the class.

It is true that right now Dragoon is probably the best all-around DPS build for Rank 7 Swordsman, mainly because of the paths it can follow which are usually with Corsair C2 or Doppelsoeldner C1 behind it, plus Hoplite.

And also because Doppelsoeldner C2 skills are restricted to 2H Swords and while other builds could take it for the extra levels on Cyclone and Deeds of Valor, most simply prefer to get more skills and/or costume from Dragoon.

Rush is a channeling skill, so it deals multiple hits.

You still have good damage though, with Earth Wave and the Dragoon skills you have plenty of damage sources to not worry about them and you also have Stabbing from Hoplite.

You have to take in consideration that while you are trading damage for mobility by picking Cataphract, you are still an offensive class and your damage is pretty good, especially on the AoE department.

The main idea for using Cataphract in PvP is because of level 15 Trot which gives you a lot of speed to close the gap against ranged classes.

Only problem with that build is that you don’t really have any hard CC besides Impale and if you fail that then there is not much left for you.

But as I always say, PvP is aobut the skills of you as a player and how you use the tools on your build. So I think that if you are comfortable with those tools then you could make it work in PvP as it would fit your playing style.

Cyclone is gonna kill anyone who stands on it for more than a few seconds, so it doesn’t really matter if you have STR or DEX.

For PvP you want to focus on having high CON to survive long enough to deal your damage, as well as having enough DEX to hit your opponents (probably around 80~100 DEX), then the rest of your points go into STR to fill your damage.

Since you have Finestra you don’t have to worry too much about critical hits. And your CON also has synergy with it, because Finestra increases block too, so you can easily switch between 2H spear and 1H+Shield in the middle of the combat to adapt to different situations.

Unless you want to run a sort of glass cannon build to burst down before they take you down, but I don’t think that would work too well in practice.

It doesn’t really help that much. Overall it is more important to have the extra HP from plate, but if you are facing a full magic team then I think you could switch to cloth and try to make it work.

This is mostly because either you get CC’ed and killed in seconds by magic or you CC them and kill them in seconds.

Yeah, Swordsman C3 doesn’t really have any damage. You would be taking it for Restrain Level 10 and a high level of Pain Barrier for PvP.

With the change to Throwing Spear I think I would rate it “Decent (6~7/10)”.

Mainly because while it is a nice 0 cooldown skill and a great filler in your rotation for damage, it is not something that will drastically change the way your character performs in combat.

The main reason why Hoplite C3 is taken is because of a higher level of Finestra which later on will be enhanced by picking Doppelsoeldner C1 at Rank 6 and have the highest amount of benefit from using Deeds of Valor. That is how picking Hoplite C3 is mostly worth it in a build.

But yeah, Throwing Spear is good in it’s current form

Would you recommend from rank 3, going for BarbarianC3 or HighlanderC3, followed by Dopple C1 > Shinobi?

My rank 2 is Peltasta for the utility.

I’ve been interested in running a 2h Sword Shinobi. Originally I was going to run Highlander C3…but then I saw that Barbarian gives you access to 2h Swords (I think?).

Not incredibly relevant to my choice, but which C3 do you think is more popular with Swordsmen at high levels?

What are your thoughts?

@Cathexis
Has there been any confirmation on being able to maintain deed stacks if you uptime it?

That is correct, you get it from Barbarian.

This really depends on what exactly are the goals of your build and your playing style. Here are the advantages of each side:

Highlander:

 • You can use Cross Guard to block with your 2H Sword which will also increase the damage of your Pierce skills on the opponent you blocked (all the Shinobi skills are Pierce-type).
 • You get Shock, Bleeding, Armor Break and the No-Jump attribute as debuffs.
 • Not as important, but the attribute of +Critical Attack from Highlander has good synergy with a STR oriented build which also has good synergy with Deeds of Valor.

Barbarian:

 • Frenzy and War Cry both increase your Physical Attack which has great synergy with Deeds of Valor (with the problem of their cooldowns).
 • You get 2 skills that can stun for 2 seconds with 2 Overheat each one.
 • Seism is a pretty good AoE ability (Barbarian has better AoE in general).

In terms of damage I think both are pretty much the same at high levels.

Both have good ways to deal damage but they are conditional. Highlander must apply Bleeding and Armor Break to it’s target plus level up it’s damage attribute to have a good chance of high burst damage. This is why it could deal more damage to a single target, especially when we take into consieration Cross Guard.

On the other hand Barbarian is mostly limited by the cooldowns of Frenzy and War Cry (and number of enemies for this one), but it could apply to fight more enemies than Highlander so the types of fights it covers is bigger.

In the end Highlander has the potential to deal more burst damage while Barbarian has better distributed increase of damage but it’s ceiling won’t be as high as Highlander, under the right circumstances.

So it depends on which playing style you prefer.

We don’t know, really. Because our version of Highlander is different from the one kTOS, so there is no real data as to what is more popular yet.

Not so far. I think we will have to wait for a brave one to test this one for us.

I think i might replace spr with con later on. Enemy can atk while being capture? If not, it will be abit risky.

That’s a shame. One more question though: How do you usually manage your cooldowns for warcry and frenzy since they have such ridiculously long cds?
