To me it was always weird that you could get so much defense for negligible offensive loss.
Guardian being what it should’ve been from the very start.

I find it to be necessary because swordsmen although supposedly designed to be tanks don’t have ANY way to mitigate damage except slithering sorta? Until now, which is kind of nice. But I still hate it. My biggest issue with this change is that swordsman is still the ONLY CLASS BRANCH that has to suffer from detrimental effects on their buffs (as if they aren’t weak enough), and this just amplifies that problem further.
Another issue is in this game the only way you are going to effectively generate aggro late in the game is by doing DPS, and this harms your DPS if you need it to “tank”.
Skill damage wouldn’t be affected so that’s not too large an issue depending on subsequent classes, and in general for the enemies which you really want this for, they hit hard enough to the point that you don’t care about dropping attack.
Well after looking at calculations you’re right it shouldn’t be that much of a difference, about 1k damage lost every .6 seconds for me, but I disagree about dropping attack (Though it actually might not be significant to matter) because that makes the chances of me not being able to do my job higher and then people who aren’t as tanky will get hit by those hard hits instead of me
Well its like you grab some 220 white armor. Upgrade it, a 220 shield upgrade it.
Probably sitting at about 700 defense at that point.
You have 48%+ from Aspersion
50% from the guard defense attribute when guarding.
35% from Guardian.
1600+ defense, plate, and you have 10% reduction to physical while Guarding (thus high block rate)
Or 83%+ while not guarding giving 1281 plus, and it’s certainly possible to reach 1k defense before defensive boosts so 2k+ defense is possible.
Or if preferred you wear Cloth and use the 35% from Guardian as a means of making up for the lower base defense of Cloth.
Depends on what is trying to kill you I suppose, but Guardian is clearly trying to help you in the goal of being a physical damage wall between 35% defense and 18% evasion. While the general game doesn’t have enemies strong enough to warrant it, there are certainly instances where it will be valued.
Coincidentally since Strength will be scaling at basically 0.47% per point, you may find more value to try and Crit instead by taking dex, which will work with the evasion boost of Guardian…
I can survive any physical damage content in the game with 300 def and a lot of evasion. My issue isn’t taking less damage (because I really don’t need to) it’s being able to actually force enemies to hit me. Which is nothing but a DPS issue because we don’t have any tools that generate aggro outside of swashbuckling which is insignificant

Some fencer builds has, and its not that they built the character out just for guardian its just that guardian buff was their defensive core now the defensive buff was nice and all but the physical penalty is gonna affect their dps quite badly

Oh well ok i’ll try to explain as to how i see things FYI im a shinobi not a fencer hahaha ok here goes…
some fencer builds like @Lostac use guardian for evasion yes the main purpose is evasion not def at the cost of lower damage before which was flat but now that it was changed to % values def would greatly be enhanced but dps would drop by 63% and thats not good for fencers or any class that wants to do dps
Btw evasion before the update was % based already so having the attribute at lvl 3 would increase you’re evasion by 18%
So using it before would give you +35 def / 18% eva -63 def
Its flat scaling wasnt noticeable as it was easy to cover up a loss of 63 damage but think about how you would cover up a 63% loss you do the math huehuehue
And no about guardian not being activated for them is a no no 18% adds alot of evasion for their evasion based build now as to why they’re evasion built idk but my idea is that dodging keeps their gears at low risk of breaking and they could just cut the other stuffs repair costs and only worry about their rapiers repair costs as we all know rapiers have low durability unlike other weapons we use
Because fencers actually can be damn good tanks and are very good at surviving without even wearing a shield
The less you get hit the more DPS you actually wind up doing because you aren’t getting knocked around at all
