GREAT READ - I’m sure all ToS staff have read this already.

ANYWAYS, raw feelings/memories from RO

1) I’m going to level an acolyte with hopes of going High priest!

Let’s get the boring whack a poring/fabre/pupa/chonchon out of the way so I can advance.

Omg I’m an acolyte now!! Where can I farm?

People/guides/sites are saying amatsu dungeon heal bombing antique firelocks while casting pneuma and dodging that lone shinobi that one shots me.
Is heal good late game? Sure is!
Is pneuma good late game? Sure is!

Let’s do this. Wow they give so much exp and I shouldn’t be here due to the level difference but it’s rewarding everytime I kill one.

Ok now, do I want to go turn undead (TU) or magnus exorcismus (ME) or full support (FS) build in the long run. FS is great for WoE and MvPing…TU is amazing for levelling at early/mid stages (prison zombies!), ME is amazing for levelling at later stages (cathedral!) and MvPing. Thank god there’s elemental damage and demon/undead type in this game. Maybe I’ll spend a few minutes working out a build.

2) I’m going to level an archer to gypsy!

Let’s get the boring whack a poring/fabre/pupa/chonchon out of the way so I can advance.

Ok I heard double strafe is good vs geographers let’s do that.

Oh wow there are these wiz’s storm gusting all these nearby goats…and these geographers can one hit me if I’m not careful. Omgg there are fire arrows and geographers are plants that are weak to fire!! wew!

How many points can I put into double strafe? It’s going to be my bread and butter all the way till the end so lets max it!! When I transcend to gypsy, I will get a stats/skills reset anyway to put all my points into Vulcan arrow!

Wow synergy between bard and gypsy songs? exp and sp reduction seems useless but all these people are using it in this mummy area.

etc etc. Farming bathories + alarm’s in clock tower. Randomly getting thara frog / creamy / zerom while levelling up

Amazing experience…admittedly I stopped playing and jumped on the WoW train for the next 8 years from 2005 onward =(. I want to go back to the granular, immersive feeling of RO As you can see, TOS has some of these elements and there are some lacking. Take me all the way IMC!

end of rant

I don’t know whether to scold you for posting this here instead of the WP forums, or admonish you for expecting this to be RO3. Anyway this isn’t RO, and hopefully it never will be, but feel free to stick around. It’s fun.

Better another RO than another everything else if you ask me.

Making it similar to RO is a good idea. There’s a reason why RO did so well and people are still playing it today. Also, if you look at RO2, it’s like all those other free to play MMOs and it’s doing very poorly. Glad that ToS is going in a different direction than most MMOs these days but they shouldn’t be afraid to make it too similar to RO. :relaxed:

You want a crappy market again? because that is how yu get a crappy market.

Just discovered this (very good read, some things I disagree with but overall captures the essence of RO)

You misunderstood him. What he want isn’t another RO, but another game that is as fun as RO.

Which this game is still clearly lacking.

Yeah just for clarity. There are many things in RO that are not good.

For example, as much as I enjoyed prontera window-shopping, I realise that it is probably backwards and AH is just better.

I did not like how MVP’s had to be timed and whoever had this timing had a monopoly on MVP’s.

I did not like the lack of quests, sometimes the game did feel a bit aimless. Having said that, when there were quests it was exciting due to the novelty of them. Nowadays we are saturated in quests…

Exactly. I’m just expressing things that I found fun and hope that designers/developers/other people can appreciate why something is fun. For me, it is freedom of choice and RO really provided that. From class choice to stat distribution to how to spend time in game.

Things I disagree on(played RO for 10+ years, probably as much as the author):

The drop rates sucked(0.01% drop rate items arent healthy for the economy). I do agree on the fixed drop rates and I’m happy that ToS kept them. I just hope we never go as low as 0.01% drop on anything ^^.

Ro had a shitty market(only way to make GOOD money was hunting the 0.01% drop rate items bots/people didnt want to farm)

Ro classes were so unbalanced it isnt even funny. Like seriously, people are crying about ToS being unbalanced but RO was one of the most unbalanced games for 6+ years.

But there is no job that can’t be countered in RO. Also, you won’t have swordsmen that outperform everyone during PVE in RO.

RO have many good things that could be added, but there is also a lot of bad things, and some people want those bad things implemented just for nostalgia’s sake, and i hope this doesn’t happen.
While ToS can drink a little from the same source of RO, it shouldn’t become RO 3.0.
ToS have a lot of qualities of it’s own and a lot of things with high potential for improvement, ToS should be it’s own thing.

Okay, one, I’m a girl, and no, I’m not interested. Two, is this the right section to submit this kind of thread because I’m in serious doubt. And three, guys, I love RO, I’m a veteran, who saw the rise and fall of that game. Another post by someone else said that ToS is a love letter to RO, and it is. Made by the same developers and musicians at that. But it’s not RO. RO is for me in the past, where nostalgia belongs and where I can look back and laugh at the good memories, and if I can go back, I might play. This is a new game, a different game. This is something that can walk beside RO but on its own, not behind it. It may be a spiritual successor but it’s not the sequel or the clone. RO has its bad sides, especially iRO considering management there is terrible and biased (major reason why I quit, management lied a lot on the players’ faces, and I mean a lot), but ToS does too. I mean the fears of Xenophobia and the pretender trolls and the bugs, it’s different. If RO was the flagship of Gravity, then this is the flagship of IMC. I just want this game to be loved for what it is, not “what it’s supposed to be”.

Why does that matter?

Really? Out of all that text that emphasized my own love letter to both RO and ToS you focused on three words that specify my gender.

rolls eyes

If you must know, I thought @Mirarara meant it was me that was being misunderstood when it was said “You misunderstood him” which was poor foresight on my part when I realized around an hour later it was the OP she was referring to.

I know the feeling. The first love that was always so perfect and wonderful , too bad mine wanted in my pants far too soon for my liking :rage: (in RO’s case it was more of my pocket and my wallet) but that’s life. So I guess my first love was kinda a gold digger? Well even if he was he sure was cute and it was nice while it lasted :kissing_heart: although now you just made me miss him…

The question now is do I miss RO enough to actually want to return? Eh, maybe, but not now. Maybe when the beta is over. I miss the feeling of impaling other PvPers with weapons and skills and watch them squirm and teleport away while dying. The good thing is when PvP gets implemented here players actually faint to the ground once in a while instead of just when they’re dead, which makes it much more fun and satisfying. :smiling_imp:

IMC themselves marketed ToS as (in their own words) “The spiritual successor to Ragnarok Online.”
If they didn’t want a comparison, they shouldn’t have intentionally marketed it to us old RO veterans with the promise of being the next RO… which right now, it’s not. Not even close…

I marked that because it seemed like you were trying to say that’s something special to me.
