Trying to use emoticons in the chat field often inserts them as white squares.
This forces you to discard your entire chat message because the game won’t send messages with invalid images in them.
Pic above is how the emoticons appear in the chat field after you select them from the emoticon list.
I’m not using any chat-related addons and even without any addons at all it still happens.
