Crit Cataphract Build

The Build

Gear from Lvl 75 gear - late game (Note I don’t know the max gems each piece of gear is able to hold. Assuming 3)

1h Spear - Adatag (if Adatag not available in cbt2 then Doom Spear) slotted with 2-3 lvl 10 star gem

Shield - Any shield with 2-3 lvl 10 star gem

Glove - Soul Chaser (if Soul Chaser not available in cbt2 then any blue glove with crit attack/rate on it) slotted with 2 to 3 lvl 10 circle gem

Necklace - Strength Pendant

Bracelet - Gladiator Band

Assuming 3 gems per piece of gear, total crit attack = additional 1496 crit attack @ lvl 75.
(Adatag 486, Soul chaser 43, Strength pendant 20, Gladiator bandx2 188, All lvl 10 gems added 759)
(Gem stat chart)

Build explained
R1) WARRIOR
SKILLS
Thrust(5) - No cooldown filler skill against bosses
Bash(4) - Useful for early leveling / point dump
Gung Ho(5) - Good damage buff
Concentrate(0) - Flat additional dmg. Doesn’t scale well + uses buff slot (soft cap @ 5)
Pain Barrier(1) - 1 point for utility. Doesn’t scale well (1 second per point)

R2) PELTASTA - Access to great attributes and fits well with the build
NOTE WORTHY ATTRIBUTES
Shield mastery - 25% block when maxed
Peltasta:Guard + Guard Defense - Free guarding ability and 50% def increase while in guard.

SKILLS
Umbo Blow(5) - CC skill / filler while waiting for cooldowns.
Rim Blow(5) - filler skill / point dump
Swash Buckling(5) - Makes grouping mobs 100x easier + Max HP buff. Recent patch nerfed the range tho.
Guardian(0) - No point because it reduces dmg, takes buff slot, finestra from hoplite decreases evasion.

R3-R4) HOPLITE - Since barbarian’s savagery and aggressor got removed from the game, it’s better to go hoplite.
NOTE WORTHY ATTRIBUTES
Finestra: Splash - Increases range? Translations isn’t exactly clear
Pierce: Continuous hit - Makes pierce hit 4x on boss monsters

SKILLS (Note that at rank 3, 5 skill points gets saved to immediately max out finestra once we get rank 4)
Stabbing(10) - Main DPS skill. Hits fast and hard
Pierce(9) - Good against bosses and large type enemies. Good filler skill
Finestra(10) - Flat crit rate now (10 crit rate per point). At R4 Hoplite, it’s able to stay up 100% of the time
Synchro Thrusting(0) - Other skills are better
Long Stride(0) - Mount is faster for movement
Spear Lunge(1) - 1 point for utility. Adding points only increase damage

R5-R7) CATAPHRACT - Good mobility with mount+trot and have good low cooldown damage skills
NOTE WORTHY ATTRIBUTES
Get on companion - Mounting

SKILLS
Impaler(0) - Animation takes too long. Can have it at 1 point for utility though.
Earth Wave(15) - Good AoE skill. Video example (Note: That is not me in the youtube link)
Trot(15) - Makes you go really fast while you’re on a mount. Can have it up 100% of the time.
Steed Charge(0) - Not exactly sure if Steed charge or Doom spike is better.
Doom Spike(10) - Chose to go with Doom Spike over Steed Charge because it looks like it does more damage on paper
Rush(5) - Great damage skill and lets you keep moving while using the skill.

After thoughts
The gear/gems i listed down is pretty unreasonable, but they’re there to show how strong crit builds can get as early as lvl 75. In normal cases, you’ll sit between 100-200 additional crit attack at that level if you invest in it. You’ll also hit R4 near 75, so for hoplites their damage spikes up by a huge amount because of the 100% finestra upkeep.

Tell me if you have any suggestions with the build or see something wrong with it

I would take Concentrate over Gung Ho since the Attributes for Concentrate give you +100 total (2 per attribute level) with a total of +111 at level 5 as compared to +50 patk -50 pdef (+1 -1 per attribute level) with a total of +70 patk and -54 pdef at level 5 for Gung Ho. Only downside to this is Concentrate has max number of hits. Since you’re going crit I’m guessing you’re not going Con and since you’re going Finestra, your Evasion will take a hit. Not to mention all your equips are +mdef. So you’ll need as much pdef you can get. Oh and buff cap is at 7 based on latest kcbt videos.

This only increases the max amount of targets you can hit within your attack range. Similar to +aoe weapons. I think…

There was a video on this regarding PvP where you can perma impale an enemy. Idk if they fixed that though.

and the status? If you dont have con… you dont will have so much hp … And to have a decente crit, you must have dex. And the other characters have crit resistance… in pvp if you dont have a good dex… you’re nothing =(

Directly comparing the damage of Gung ho and Concentrate, Concentrate does have the edge but if you factor in critical hits and damage type weakness (in this case against enemies weak to stab) Gung ho starts to do more damage. With that being said, the limited number of attacks and the need to constantly reapply Concentrate plays a major role in why I chose Gung ho over Concentrate. At level 5, Gung ho lasts a total of 85 seconds and has an animation lock of around 1 second. Concentrate only adds damage for the 1st 11 hits, has a cooldown of 20 seconds and has an animation lock of around 1 second. Usually, you’re able to burn through 11 Concentrate stacks easily within 20 seconds so you’re losing damage while you wait for the Concentrate to come back up. To have the same upkeep time as Gung ho, you have to recast concentrate 4x which puts you in the casting animation for 3 seconds longer than Gung ho, which could have been used to dps. All of these things add up and I feel like overall Gung ho is better.

But with that said, I think Concentrate can be better than Gung ho in certain bossing situations. For example, most field bosses have multiple AoE attacks which doesn’t give you a lot of time to get in hits before you have to run away. In these situations I can see concentrate being better than Gung ho.

The only armor equipment I listed is the gloves. The boots, pants, and shirt slots are free and can be easily be filled to fufill w.e. defensive stat you’ll need.
Although, if I had to choose I would fill those slots with Banshee Viel(armor), Hydra Trousers(pants), Wind Runner(shoes), and Aias(shield) (if I can some how get these items lol)
Seems like a pretty good set up against physical damage mobs.

Didn’t know that. Thanks ^^

whats the stats? str dex? ty xD

I presume this is a PVE build right?
There’s not many cc skills in this build and a lot of the stronger skills (Stabbing, Earth Wave, Doom Spike) all require the target not to move around too much to land, which doesn’t happen much in PVP.
Also this build sacrifices rank 7 to get Cataphract c3, which means you’re giving up on Shinobi or Fencer (if this order doesn’t get changed in the future). I would wait until details of rank 7 comes out and then if you really don’t think Shinobi or Fencer fits your build in any way, you can complete your Cataphract c3 for rank 7.

out of curiosity, why not just go swordsman twice instead of peltasta? seems like all you are swinging through it to get is a shield skill, which… does cataphract rely on shields much? i thought they used 2 handed spears? annnddddd aren’t crit builds generally relying on evasion as their main defensive tactic? (i’ve only a light understanding of the game so far and haven’t been in CBT sooo im basing this off generalizations from other MMO’s )

The OP is going to use Spear + Shield as Cataphract skills can be used with either one or two handed spear. Since they’re using a shield, Peltasta offers more than Swordie C2 does.
Peltasta gets:
-Ability to guard with your shield, increasing defense
-Slight crowd control via Umbo Blow knockdown
-A taunt (Swashbuckling) which lets you group up mobs and AoE them down for faster grinding.

Evasion isn’t used as defense due to Finestra buff which increases your critical chance and block but lowers evasion.

if you plan on playing with other people a bunch though - like just for the sake of understanding. you would be almost purely DPS correct? because with a build like this you wont be much tanking, the shield and block stuff would be for while you are in solo play or when you dont have some other lovely meatshield to eat the damage for you?

I should have mentioned that this is a pure PvE build. PvP “can” work if you move around some skill points but it wont be optimal.

Yep 50/50 str/dex until you reach 100 crit rate base. When you hit Hoplite 2 and get lvl 10 finestra, your crit rate will sit at 200. After this point, I would put points into dex only if I’m not critting 80% of the time. Alternatively, you can sub in a lvl 10 diamond gem onto your shield for more crit rate, but I would wait until there’s alchemists around for gem roasting because it has a penalty of -40 max attack. (Note level 10 gems take a long time to get so use whatever’s available)

Yes it’s a PvE build. Judging from the limited information available on rank 7 classes, I don’t think shinobi and fencer would fit into the build very well. They would have to be REALLY good for me to trade up 100% upkeep + higher movement speed on trot and a mobile AoE skill.

Nickyan covered the most of it but another reason I go 1h spear/shield is because of the 3 extra gem slots available on your shield. These 3 slots would cover any damage differences between 1h and 2h spears + it’ll give me extra defensive stats too.

Correct. In normal farming situations, most mobs would die before they become much of a threat. Against most bosses, the mobility of maxed trot + mount would let you get in your attacks and quickly jump out before you get hit. Against bosses that like to spam AoE, you have guard to tank 1 or 2 hits (plus swashbuckling to pad your hp by a bit but I wouldn’t use this in a party setting). While in a party, you’ll be sitting at the back just spamming your skills while the tank holds aggro. Skill rotation would look something like

Spear lunge > Stabbing/Pierce/Doom Spike > Earth Wave/Rush and then using Rim Blow and Thrust as filler damage skills while Bash and Umbo Blow is used as CC against trash mobs

this is a pretty cool guide. Thanks

ah! see this makes PERFECT sense to me now. I keep forgetting about the gear slots. but yeah having an offhand which you can ALSO shove stuff on to buff yourself stat wise absolutely makes sense to me. Though now i have another question, the gems you slot on your gear… are they specific to certain items only… (example - shield slots can only hold gems that have either vit… or whatever else is attributed to tanky/dps things) AND are the gems stat based only? like say straight up 1 dex or so… or do they have “increases block / crit/ some other thing like this”

^ i noticed that on a lot of the skills at the very bottom is a er, thing saying fatigue or cool-down or something (i forget the word right this moment). is that its own “energy” bar or something? like there would be HP / SP / and then something for using skills?

There are 4 different types of gems and they give different bonuses depending on which piece of gear you put them on. For example, If I slot in a level 1 circle gem onto my main weapon, I would get 4 max attack and -1 min attack. If I slot the same gem into my shirt, I would get 23 max hp and -1 dodge. The list of gem stats can be found here.

Since all the skills in the build uses SP as its primary resource, I think you’re talking about the charge bar. Certain skills require you to charge up the skills to get the full effect. In this case those skills would be Earth Wave and Doom Spike.

Cataphract seems pretty meh class now… Yeah it has nice skills but their CD is very long compared to Barbarian or Corsair news amazing strong + very low CD skills… . If u want much stronger Pve build then change Cataphract to Corsair or Barbarian…If u want pure spear then go for Barbarian because their new skills does not have Req Stance…

thank you so much ^^ now i can try and sorta visualize class building a bit better ^o^. were you one of the lucky ones to get to mess around in the last CBT? i’ve been wanting to build a character similar to my agi knight that i had in RO when i played FOREVER ago… but was having a hard time sorting through the skills and stuff.

i was just thinking, what is this character’s stat build?

wheres the stat build? str dex etc xD TY

but you know that you can upgrade your gem until it dont give the negative status with the alch class, right?

Indeed Cataphract does seem pretty lacklustre now…
Watch this video of Cataphract from JCBT:

Even though the boss is a special boss that’s a few levels above him, the skills aren’t great and he dies fast, pretty much as fast if not faster than a highlander (at least highlanders have cross guard).

Earth wave only hit once (wasn’t this supposed to be changed to hit multiple times?)

His build: Swordsman -> Highlander -> Barbarian -> Cataphract.
Keep in mind that JCBT’s Barbarian still has Savagery and Aggressor buffs.

I think the guy was playing poorly and his class build is odd at least to me, I think cata has good damage once you get all the skills and the build fully set even with the longer cooldowns.

Only real downfall I see is not much defense in most Cata builds and I haven’t really seen how it stacks up against most other classes on dps but it seems good on paper.
