Can you give me some advice?

I don’t think you understand what they’re saying. The Cleric tree doesn’t have skills that will take aggro away from your DPS teammates. Your survivability and heals will do you no good AS A TANK if no one is hitting you. They’re not calling your Cleric tank squishy. They’re calling your DPS teammates squishy.

??? What are you smoking? Nobody said on this thread that Clerics don’t have DPS. And OP was asking about TANK builds.

The selective reading of this person is insane. The OP wants a TANK CLASS not a DPS CLASS. So it doesn’t matter who has the higher DPS.

So again your DPS argument really doesn’t matter. Do you know what holding aggro means? It forces your opponents to hit you. Giving more time for your DPS teammates to do their thing. Without it, you’re useless as a tank. Yeah you have more DPS. But you still can’t tank FOR your teammates. Anyway I’m done with someone who clearly doesn’t know what the OP is asking about.

let clarify things there is a

#TANK ROLE

and

#TANK BUILD

a TANK ROLE are characters that draw agro away from DPS and only 2 classes can do this centurion and peltast. especially protecting the burst DPS builds.

a TANK BUILD is building as high defense as possible in min/maxing. hence all classes can have viable tank build. as Clerics can be tanky supports or dps supports.

in theory cleric can go into tank role supposing you have more DPS-tank hybrd than your pure build DPSer classes. then go ahead if you can have a DPS-TANK hybrid build that can out DPS pure burst build classes.

Dullahan does ~14/15k damage, most clerics have 13-20k HP, most swordsman have 25-40k HP at 200. That would be a more realistic comparison, but regardless, that is not the point.

In a party, especially in dungeons, a cleric can not keep the aggro of a boss, and it’s adds. They have no taunt. They can most definitely take a hit, but usually the support class is designed to take more hits than the average DPS.

What would your idea of a cleric do in this situation realistically in ToS?

Your in a party of 5, you designated yourself as the tank. You attack the boss first, and have aggro. The boss immediately summons 15 mobs all over the room, and they go for the DPS. What do you do?

How can you grab aggro off all the mobs? How can you keep aggro on the boss?

Now these are just dungeon situations, there is soon to be raiding added to ToS as well.

Also, if you assume that a cleric can solo through all the dungeons, at appropriate levels, you’ll be in for a surprise. You can most definitely solo dungeons that are lower level than you, and I expect raids to be more difficult, so you probably won’t be able to solo those either.

As for the topic of DPS, you brought up sunray hands/energy blast. With the HP changes, and standardized PvP, assuming your fighting level 200’s, unless someone is full dex, you would kill a total of 0 players. You have to understand that in Steparu’s videos, he was fighting under leveled, and under geared players. Also PvP was not standardized, and DM didn’t actually do anything for Steparu.

This is why Monk really didn’t get any nerf’s asside from double punch stamina consumption, because it’s not even OP, just balanced.

With 5 people in SZ, every boss hit counts as 5 hits to SZ, and every mob that hits counts as 5 per mob, it’ll last 2 seconds in a dungeon boss fight.

aww you’re no fun :frowning:

Let’s see.
You guys brought in some good points.
To be honest, I realised I was thinking this using the wrong perspective.
I was still thinking in WoW/RO terms, where you pretty much had to go to a specific role and stick with it, and where tanks are needed for dungeons, if you ever wanna get some good EXP, that is.
But I was reading that a lot of you guys could solo most of the game easily. Perhaps at first I will pick a DPS-Tank role mix. I still would like to go full tank tho, even if that makes me level up at a worm’s pace ;w;

@PrinceMark and @SixPool, you guys should chill! There was a lot of misunderstanding from both sides. However, SixPool is right in that the Cleric doesn’t have a taunting skill. Tanks are supposed to be low DPS, you are supposed to use your levelup EXP points to make your defense and health better, and using half of those points for strength would be a waste. And no matter how much damage you have, you’ll always lose in terms of aggro to an actual DPS. Which is why it’s important for a tank character to have a taunting skill that can easily direct all the enemy damage to him. Either way, thank you for the insight, Mark. I will try to watch more videos!

@Karjalainen You are right, there’s a clear distinction between the role and a build. I had been using them interchangeably, so I apologize. (Also, that animation is hilarious. I was surprised I hadn’t seen it. Guess i haven’t played WoW long enough, haha~)

Especially with bosses this game is more about avoiding hits then having a guy standing in them.

Now that I know that your certain that you want to be a full tank, understand that you won’t need to be tanking as much until dungeons and raids, and now it’s a whole lot easier to choose classes!

Classes that I believe are a must have for full tanks:

  1. Atleast one rank of Peltasta for swashbuckling.
  2. Atleast one rank, preferably more, of hoplite for Finestra, since block % is highly valuable.
  3. If your going Rodelero, the only real benefit is CC, and I recommend atleast 2 circle to get the best out of it. But I recommend skipping over this class, it doesn’t bring enough to the table in PvE, and is okay at best for pvp builds.
  4. Definitely one rank of Centurion to be even more useful as a full tank.

Reading PrinceMark posts is like injecting yourself with cancer.

That right there is the opposite of tanking. Polar opposite. That isn’t something a tank in any game should think (unless boss mechanics demand it).

Nobody said that.

Find a skill in the cleric tree that taunts, or increases aggro generation; THEN you can have your almighty god of tanking that is still going to require MP pots to sustain all of the skill usage.

tldr; no taunt = no living teammates

Now that I’m done addressing the pretend ToS-Guru; I certainly agree that swordsmen are the only class tree capable of competent tanking, however I feel like ToS takes things more Monster Hunter style, where the best defense is never getting hit in the first place.

I think a secondary role of the tank, beyond holding aggro and taking the hits, would be to interrupt high damage AoEs that boss monsters use. I believe bosses now have scaling CC resist though, so you would really have pick and choose when to CC.

So I propose that your choice priorities for full tank be:

  1. Whatever Fate says
  2. Taunts
  3. CC abilities
  4. Defense buffs that don’t have massive drawbacks
  5. Spam-able damage

Almost anything can be considered good as long as you enjoy playing it. And that class selection is pretty nice.
But it depends on the goals you have for your character.
The ideal playstyle you’d like to have and stuff like that…
And PrinceMark is okay, he simply forgot about the taunt. Yes, I didn’t like his tone. And the “I don’t need my teammates” attitude is not great, either. And being a person who loves linguistics, I don’t appreciate the way he talked, either. But in the past, I’ve also made mistakes like that, I’ve also talked like that, and I’ve also had such attitudes. And I think poking fun at him for that isn’t good. Well, I won’t try to personally stop you from doing that, either, just giving my two cents here :B
