Appeal for IMC to reset and lock zoom distance when in TBL/GBL ☢

Not removing for reference (I stand corrected for some of the things I mentioned):

Original title: Appeal for Zoomy addon developer to revert feature (OR appeal for IMC to revise zooming mechanics?) :radioactive:

Original post:

Sorry if this seems like a joykiller to Zoomy users but the addon, at least as what I’ve seen from the screenshot below from another user, seems to not just allow zooming out of the screen and giving a bigger view of the map, it’s also enabling the player to see interactible objects and players farther than normal.

If it’s true that this is what Zoomy is able to do now (I’ve previously known it only zooms out but doesn’t change the character’s range of sight) then it is providing a significant disadvantage to other players, specifically ones who aren’t using it or are using it only for “allowable” things like taking a screenshot.

I’m posting this here not as a report but simply for an open discussion with the community as well as to appeal to @Excrulon remove this exploitable feature.

If I’m wrong about the addon and that maybe the player installed another addon or did something else to increase his range of sight allowing him to see other players from across the arena, please let me know.

If it’s the game itself (built-in) that’s allowing us to do this already as long as we have something that allows us to zoom out, then OK, everyone should probably install the addon or be at a handicap.

ps Anyone know how we can contact @Excrulon besides here? I’m in Telsiai, I’m not sure if we’re on the same server. I think he’s in Klai or Orsha.

EDIT:

Thanks @matthias2479 for the clarification:

So it appears the game itself is allowing us to do this as long as we have a way to zoom out of the current view - doesn’t matter if it’s via addon or editing a game file or two.

There’s so many way to abuse Zoomy’s feature in BL… I love using it when finding WB but it has to go :confounded:

It does increase sight though.

I normally try to avoid the forums because of how much of a shiatshow it is, but I am going to clear up some misconceptions about this addon to all the whiners out there.

  1. Zoomy does not increase your client’s draw distance. The game has a draw distance outside the default Field of view naturally, your just not able to see it.

  2. You do not need an addon to mimic Zoomy’s effect of your Field of View. All Zoomy is doing is letting you utilize the client.xml in your ToS folder in the game without having to close and reload the game client.

Again, anyone can use this option, the addon just makes it so you don’t have to close and reopen your client. If you have problems with the UI send them to feedback about the UI itself, and not a addon.

You selfish cunt, I’m using zoomy for screenshot feature, zooming in and out a little to capture sceneries and my own character. I’ don’t even care about GBL disadvantage. This is why we can’t have nice things, do you have to report everything that you see?

I’m sure Excrulon can’t control when, how and where his addons are installed at, he just provides the scripts and that’s it. The only thing he can do is discontinue it and not provide to anyone else, maybe patch his other addons to not allow Zoomy being installed at same time, but it would require people to voluntarily update their addons, which won’t cut out for everyone else.

Not to mention, of course, even if he did that, changing the z-axis for the camera is a rather simple task for those who know at least the basics of reverse engineering.

I hope staff confirm if this is legal or not. I’m really tempted to use this in pve since it feels like i need some more space due to skill slot eating up space.

I kinda understand why. It allows the game to load up objects nearby before they enter your screen so they doesn’t seem to “pop up out of nowhere”.

But there’s also a reason why the game doesn’t allow us to zoom out too much by default. It could also be some sloppy job on IMC’s part that they did restrict the zooming yet is allowing this to happen.

I know my post was kinda TLDR, but learn to read. I did not ask for the addon to be banned or anything. I wanted it discussed. No need to be childish.

i cant even target people using mouse mode half of the screen as an archer

also the same with the zoom addon. it increases your view distance but you cant target people until you get close like half the range of an archer’s auto attack which is really a disappointment for me as an archer that casually play PvP.

auto target in keyboard mode has the same target range as an archer auto attack and mouse mode is half of the auto attack range.

this is also the same in merc mission.

I’m a fan of it myself.Great for screenies :sparkles:

It’s not about targetting or being able to attack from afar, it’s more of a “situational awareness” advantage.

I won’t condone nor do I use it, but I’ll provide his (Excrulon’s) rationale as to why Zoomy is available in the Add-on Manager, last I asked him about it.

Even if he removed it, there are numerous third-party add-ons made by other people that emulate a similar effect. He provided it to a mass public audience to narrow any advantages between the general public and the few people using similar add-ons that do the same thing.

I personally just think that the game’s zoom should reset itself when entering TBL/GBL and lock in place, similar to how it does in cutscenes.

I know users like you use it for QoL things like that which I completely am very OK with. :frowning:

The problem is it’s being used to exploit a flaw in how the game was made.

Thanks @Veritas - your response is the most sensible solution to this issue in my opinion. I’ve edited my post a bit to feature your suggestion.

There are so many ignorant statements here. I’ll remove it from addon manager because I’m tired of having people whine to me about it (but they whine about every addon so meh). Here are the facts.

  1. It’s not going to change anything. People were already modifying zoom themselves months ago. One of the main reasons I released it is to level the playing field. You know the saying if guns are outlawed then only outlaws have guns? Well, that’s completely true, and it’s the same thing here.

  2. You can already modify the zoom all you want just by editing a client config file.

  3. This isn’t a client-side issue. This is a server-side issue. It’s imc’s responsibility not to trust the client, yet they always do. imc needs to do two things: 1) make it so the server only sends data within a radius that they want to allow the clients to see, and 2) make it so things only trigger if you’re within range that the server allows (eg long range skill attacks and stuff). imc has a poor track record with always trusting the client, and this is just another case of that.

  4. If you’re losing because of the enemy using zoom, your rank was never going to be high anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

I was working on a spectator mode for tbl/gvg. Allowed for moving camera whenever and you could center it so it gave a view of the whole stadium so you could watch everyone. It’s cool. I just scratched it cause there would be more whining.

You seem not used to 2016’s internet. People whine about everything.

Except the Zoomy+magnetic force combo, I agree with this statement.

@Biskee just noticed your a oracle C2. you think C3 will save the class? im planning to make one.

OT: imc should address this because right now it causes confusion and misunderstandings. it does give advantage to those who do not use it in PVP. PVE wise though its good for them panty shots and background shots. it just needs a little tweaking.

Although, i think imc wants us to be able to zoom out? because look at that picture, the stadium still have the decorations and stuff. you cant see that if in normal view. all in all, its just imc’s fault really. all the time they put in this game and still a lack of knowledge whats going on in their game

I’m against banning zoom addons. There is more than one, and as Excrulon stated before - you can do it yourself. As far as I understood, the one that I’m using currently doesn’t even increase draw distance, so it’s practically like having a different aspect ratio.

Also, I DONT EVEN USE IT IN PVP (see vids here). Because on practice it makes targeting things too hard to bother.

The only use I can think of is againt parties moving from down-screen. BUT let me remind you that in ToS PvP any party attacking from the bottom part of the map has sight advantage - have you considered that little fact before whining? What next, ban IMC for giving that party sight advantage? LMAO!

In short: this game needs zoom and it also needs RCX to boot. Close-minded people who just want to restrict everything useful and practical should go.

BUT if a community is willing, restraining maximum zoom distance in PvP modes might be a solution. Just please not vanilla camera. Make it like 15-20% farther as maximum. My current addon doesn’t allow for that and I’m too lazy to do it myself, but I think that would’ve been much more comfortable.

Please don’t. I think it’s used more for screenshot purposes than anything, and for people like me who don’t have a very detailed zoom normally this is quite useful. Other screenshot software is blurry and low quality for some reason.

This being in the add-on manager also eases the process by a good amount.

IMC hasn’t said anything official concerning this kind of add-on, it’s more beneficial than negative, and I think the compliments outweigh the complaints. So again, please consider keeping it.
