I mean… think about it.
R8 is just around the corner and has nearly invalidated not only most builds, but almost the entire “core” fundamentals of the game that we’ve built our characters around up until this point.
- High base damage abilities
- OP buffs (looking at you, Missile Hole)
- So much “anti-magic” crap that not only are magic circles pretty R.I.P. but so are a lot of the lower damaging skills with all the mdef in PvE.
R8 brings a lot more though with Homunculus and JP scrolls. Not only will you have to spend a lot to remain competitive (I’m not the best, but, come on, nearly everyone wants to be the best that they can, and to do that will require having a Homun with JP and buying JP scrolls) but you’ll have to invest a lot of additional time as well.
If your build has been ruined by the R8 info then you’ve had to (or better do it now) reroll your character and try again. On top of all of that, now you have to do Saalus constantly on that new main just to “keep up” with Transcendence. Being figuratively forced to do something to remain competitive is just a total buzzkill.
A lot of people weigh in the value of the character by looking at what they can do by themselves. It’s just the nature of it all and isn’t wrong to do so. “I can solo this mission in x minutes” “I can kill this boss in x seconds” “I can kill a ton of mobs on-cycle effectively and clear a grinding map by myself” “I can 1v1 against anyone and win” etc etc etc. People like feeling that, even if their character can’t do everything, that it can at least do something flawlessly.
But that’s just it. Unless you keep up on everything, or run a meta, you won’t stand a lot of chance at doing a lot of anything compared to most others.
My main? I have to re-roll. My newest character? If my math is correct, he can instagib any boss once but with an unreasonable setup time. He can’t solo grind effectively without JP Homunculus or JP scrolls. He needs to run Saalus everyday, along with the rerolled main. They both will need attributes, gear sets, and so much more. Oh, and he can’t PvP because what he does bring to the table is far too limited compared to specialty blends.
Oh. That’s right. I could make another character specifically for PvP or GvG. And go through the entire bother again of playing all the same content again. And then get another JP Homunculus, more JP scrolls, more Saalus runs for yet another Transcendence, PvP gear, oh and I’ll need to farm mats for this weapon or that armor, can’t forget cards, better invest in 10* of this and that card too, etc etc etc…
Man. TOS definitely feels more like a chore at this point than anything else.
