Am I the only one that's played an MMO before?

Pretty much every MMO after RO also had terrible gameplay though, and ToS is going down the same path

I have played MMO’s since I was a child. I’ll admit I’ve only played two games on launch was Ultima Online, and Final Fantasy 11 but I was only around 5 years old for UO and 11 or 12 for FF11 so I can’t accurately say I remember their launches. My dad was a huge gamer when I was younger so we played numerous games on release.

But I’ve played MMO’s for quite some time; FF14, Ragnarok Online, Mabinogi, Atlantica Online(Was pretty good while under Ijji, fell off quite hard once Nexon took over.), RO2, FF11. A few others but I didn’t play them for more then a month or so I feel they aren’t worth mentioning. I understand bugs get worked out in time and that’s good. I understand the IMC staff is probably under a lot of pressure trying to work out these fixes which will hopefully be patched tomorrow.

I really hate to compare IMC to Riot games, but if there was a game breaking bug on a weekend or the servers were down they worked on the issue during the weekends and communicated. I know Riot did this for a fact since I’ve played the game since its beta. They were always quick to respond and very vocal to the community when they started off. You could relate with them, and as a company by no means were they huge in those days. I know the devs are Koreans so they have different work ethics and I know I sound entitled when I ask for communication. But it goes a long way to easing the doubt one may have about a game they actually enjoy but are uncertain about its future.

I try to stay away from forums and reviews, or even hints about how a game is supposed to be played efficiently or build paths. So yes I didn’t do my research before buying the game I should of been better about that. But I enjoy going into a game blind, doing things how I want to play. Because half the enjoyment of a game for me is learning.

TL;DR: I’ve played MMO’s, and two on launch when I was younger. I feel as company IMC lacks communication, and I feel uncertain about ToS future.

I’m in that older crowd that has seen a lot of launches, but I’ve seen both bad launches and some good ones. The good ones have shown me what is possible and have now set the bar. ToS is way below that bar. There’s no excuse for this when other companies have shown us that it’s possible to do far better.

Ultimately, I don’t think it’s right for consumers to excuse a developer for releasing a defective product on the premise that all products are released defective. I think this is about reasonable expectations and respect.

If you present something and make it sound like a complete product and are looking for money, then yes, if I pay I expect to have a functional product. If you present something and say that we’re still in development and are looking to get some advance funding in order to continue developing a better product, then maybe if I’m interested in what you’re making, I’ll pay just to support what will hopefully become a great product. If you present something and make it sound complete, but really it’s still in development, then that’s a betrayal of trust between the consumer and developer.

As one of the players that lives on these forums and followed the patch notes from kTOS, I’m in the informed group that knew what I would be buying. This fits into that cash advance that IMC needs to continue development and that this is not a complete product.

There’s a lot of people that have a lot more of a life than I do that were very uninformed as to the real state of the game and expected a polished product. These people are the ones that are friends of yours that hear your hype towards this game. These people are the ones that are seeing this game appear on the Steam front page. And these same people are very disappointed now.

Agreed. I’ve seen other launches go bad and even here as part of both beta tests with a limited number of participants, I knew what to expect. Yet other people are still amazing me with all the complaints.

The technical stuff will get fixed. It’s been addressed, and maintenance is right around the corner. I realize the game is out now and people are excited to play, but there’s no time limit on play time anymore. Why rush?

My only complaint at this point is having a trade limit even with a token. That’s ridiculous and I can only hope it gets changed.

I think a lot of people are overreacting here. Still I think you haven’t played enough MMORPGs. WoW is more than 11 years old so you can’t compare them.
The last launches I was part of weren’t that bad. RIFT launch was perfect. Black Desert was ok, not perfect but way better than TOS. B&S was also ok.
So a good launch is not an unsolved mystery.

TOS is not open beta or any beta its early access after its the full game release.
ff14 arr have some smal bugs but nothing that prevent you from play the game / parts of the game (like dungeons).

EQ1’s launch was brilliant.

WoW was horrible BUT THEY COMMUNICATED AND ACTUALLY FIXED THINGS… As a matter of fact, since we’re comparing to WoW, on day 5 they had it up and running (they completely shut the game down for 3 or 4 days and then relaunched). The rest of the problems where far smaller to this nonsense.

GW2 I was there for launch… GW2 had the second best launch I’ve ever seen. At this point I’m assuming you’re just throwing out names.

D3 was another WoW-esque launch where they shut the game down and then relaunched… THEY DID SOMETHING! THEY ALSO COMMUNICATED.

EQ2 had a mediocre launch. Nothing game breaking just lag issues. Open communication and fixed in a week.

TERA had an excellent launch with none of these issues. Lag concerns but fixed in a week and not so much that you couldn’t even turn in a quest.

SWTOR had one of the best launches in MMO history. Hell SWTOR’s only problem was END GAME problems!

Keep telling me more about how ā€œevery MMO have dis problem trollololā€ and I’ll keep shutting it down. Cut the bullshit, grab a pair, and stop being a little bitch about your dignity.

Zero communication is not acceptable. Taking a weekend off DAYS AFTER LAUNCH is not acceptable. AND GUESS WHAT! None of you who can’t realize this will keep this game floating!

We don’t want perfection! We don’t want everything! We simply want the company we paid for a product to DO THEIR JOB and their job is to maintain the MMORPG. It’s not my fault that some of you (still a minority, mind you) are so simple that you state ā€œevery MMO have dis problem trollololā€ without even REMOTELY mentioning what every other MMO did to RESOLVE THESE PROBLEMS!!!

It would be like me saying ā€œWell… that guys car had faulty breaks too.ā€ Except he took his into the shop immediately to get them fixed and I’m so ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  stupid I’m sitting here expecting them to magically fix themselves.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I believe that everyone should be more understanding and patient regarding these matters. I’m not saying I haven’t gotten frustrated at time but I am saying that we can’t do anything about this and it’s better to be supportive than destructive.

The issues here are 2:

  1. you’re under heavy drugs

  2. you really are clueless… so i guess someone have to enlighten you: FF14 at launch day was SO BAD and TOTALLY UMPLAYABLE that the game actually had to be shut down for about a complete year to be completely reworked and launched again…

But wait, you actually added ā€œarrā€ at the end so i see what you did here… you’re totally bypassing FF14 REAL obscene launch by going into the reworked version… smart move… smart move… totally useless but a very smart ā€œlast resortā€ move… :stuck_out_tongue:

That doesn’t mean it ought to be a standard though. A lot of MMORPGs actually had decent launches though unless they got DDOS’d. Then, that’s entirely a different story.

Can’t really compare those beasts to ToS.

Just Tera is an okay comparison, I guess.

But I am also surprised by the lack of communication from IMC, considering they have quite a few people here.

There’s 6 staff members listed when I try to tag, and 2 gms (but I guess they don’t count for the forums, YET I saw more responses from them, LOL)

Since they’re new at publishing in these parts, I’m quite tolerant when it comes to lag and bugs caused by the lag. But the restrictions they’ve put out are just mind blowing.

The problem is that the forum staff and the dev team are not the same people… that means that the forum staff, in order to be able and say something to us, has to hear from the dev team first or they’ll have absolutly nothing to say.

So if we’ve got to pick on someone from IMC it’s eprobably the DEV team that has a poor communication with the pr staff/forum staff.

Yeah, you’re probably right about that. Hopefully they will do something about that at some point. Lack of communication is sad.

i am talking of ff14 arr (2.x) not 1.x.1.x and2.x are not the same game.
i played this from beta and playing this days as well. never have game killing bugs there.

Orf course… and i can totally understand that since i also have a game that released almost perfectly… i mean of course i’m talking about the release of patch 1000.1.99 since the FIRST release was actually bad… but trust me… when the game released it’s patch 1000.1.99 it was perfect…

Of course the release weeryone is interested about is the release of patch 1000.1.99… screw the first release… first release doesn’t matter.

Themn you know what? When ToS will have everything fixed i’ll open a nre tread saying that the game release was PERFECT… because it obviously is a new release if the game now is fine…

ToS has had an extremely buggy launch. I was there for when Star Wars: The Old Republic launched and it had it’s fair share of bugs, but even it didn’t have it quite so bad as ToS is going currently. The RMT people are running amok, Klaipeda server (not sure about the other servers) is only half functional. Probably the one big thing that nags at me about all of this though is what I am hearing from my friends that played in the CBTs… and that is that the game is buggier now than it was during the beta tests and there are bugs from the CBT that -STILL- aren’t fixed. It almost sounds to me like maybe they should have waited another month or two to hammer out the bugs before doing the early release.
