Tree of Savior Forum

A Note about the so-called RO sequel

When i first found out about this game which was about 2 years ago, i was amazed. It was very unique visually which kept me interested. At first I wasn’t aware that the developers of TOS were also the people who made RO.

I had played RO for a decent amount of time but i kind of got tired since there is too much clicking and I valued my hand coz i use it for work as an artist.

When the developers themselves mentioned that this is the spiritual successor of the original RO, I was like OK with it.

I wasn’t a fan of the original RO, neither did I hate it, it was one of those games who you grew up with during childhood and would be left out if you didnt get to play it. I liked the music, i like the art of RO and that was all.

Tree of Savior have an amazing art and visual design and great soundtrack too. On this aspect probably is probably what was comparable to RO during its time.

What I find sad, I’ve seen dozens of threads from here, steam, and other fansites talking about it is the real sequel to RO, and also other threads like

“Please put blah feature in TOS just like in RO”.

What is wrong with this?
This is like if you know a husband and wife who are doctors, and you expect their kid to be a doctor. And that is just wrong. What about the kid who wants to be different, imagine what kind of pressure people put on him subconsciously.

Ragnarok Online will always be a legend, but RO players in my opinion should not come to this game expecting to relive the glory days. That time was long gone. And expectations, if not met could ruin things for everyone.

So to all former RO players out there, keep an open mind and just let things be and not let the past dictate the future.

This game is beautiful.

EDIT:
About the devs, calling it “Spiritual Successor”. I have assumed it since most reliable gaming news websites did it as well, and some interviews and other sources did it too.

Whatever the case, it doesn’t really matter to the point.

I wish I could like this post 1000 more times.

But did the devs themselves really say that ToS is a spiritual successor? Is this how all of this started? :disappointed_relieved:

From what i’ve read yes. But later i also found out that they regret saying that because people went crazy with this idea.

No the father of Ragnarok Online, its original Director , who was opposed to Gravity’s pay to win method and left. and formed his own studio.

a lot of content was actually cut from Ragnarok Online compared to its original iteration by said director, so considering the style, people assumed the director wanted to make his ideals for Ragnarok Online come to fruition on this game.

Interesting…I wonder where they’ve stated this because I can’t find it. It doesn’t sound like something they would even say, in my honest opinion.

Oh is that so? People are crazy.

Its life if you are named michael they expect u to be like

Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson or Michael Schummacher

It’s alright to be nostalgic. But ToS is ToS and RO1 is RO1. Though I would still hope that IMCGames make ToS at least a lil bit sandbox…

I hope the steam reviews won’t be mixed or negative just because it doesn’t live up to those kinds of people’s expectations. But then again it’s steam reviews we’re talking about, so… :mask:

There are a lot of sandbox games out there but in my opinion, they have lost purpose.

The only GREAT sandbox games are GTA and Sims, but then again the sandbox category is quite broad in games.

Haha, the forumers here will spam the steam reviews with positive scores if that happens. /joking

I think the spiritual sucessor thingy first started in news coverage of G-Star 2013 event. And when the term stuck on the media, the RO community gets super hyped.

I feel you. These RO threads are getting so obnoxious.

I’m sure some of us here were also once one of those people who expected this game to be ‘continuation’ of RO, myself included.

But then, I was new that time and judged it by the art design and comparable classes to those in RO. But slowly this game turned out to be great in its own way. Just let it bloom itself and be remembered as another memorable game. (I’m starting to write a poem here lol)

Btw IIRC, I’ve also read the spiritual successor term on this site with big pictures and videos before it was modified and forums added.

On a funnier note, on Gravity’s side, in the RO2 forums, the words “Tree of Saviour” has been censored.

Now that is really funny.

The reason that people are very excited about a so-called “RO successor” isn’t because they necessarily want an RO clone. It’s more the fact that RO was very unique and there haven’t been any MMOs like it since it was released. That’s also the reason people say they want certain features that are ‘like RO.’ Other popular MMOs are pretty much all very similar to WoW and differ greatly from RO’s formula. Things like open world, no item/level scaling, random spawn points for monsters, no focus on end game content, freedom with character stat/skill builds, etc. I’m sure if there were other popular games that used these features you’d hear a lot less of ‘Please make ____ like RO.’ People are just excited to play a unique game. Otherwise, they could just go play one of the many other MMOs that already exist. ^^

They censored ToS from RO 2 forum? Really? Haha, I am so tempted to change my forum avatar to ToS in RO2 forum, and see what’s their response (getting bored there haha)

Btw i think you should re read if the ToS developers ever called Tree of Savior a spiritual successor.

Because you will never find spiritual successor in any of their blogs or interview.

It was the fans and gaming sites that called it spiritual successor.

this is why i said making ToS as an RO reborn/remake/clone is just plain wrong and is a bad habbit from former RO players to the present ( from the other thread i post from. (too much “from” @_@"))

this is a new game made by amazing people for players to enjoy(soon that is)…

sure it may look like RO but its totally not… art wise(chara design), game mechanics, party system, game UI, etcs…

well the my point is… stop comparing this to RO… tis is bad habit . it is a different and new game to be released soon! (after rigorous testing that is… i dont want the devs to rush the game developments and make the game buggy =_=")… peace out!

there would so much disappointment when you actually see the game in details as ToS is no where near what RO is. Since it only looks like RO.

the title hurts my eyes somehow.

I can only remember the first thing I saw from tree of savior was: this in the article they wrote “The upcoming 2.5D fantasy MMO was first announced at Hangame EX 2011 and deemed as a sequel of Ragnarok Online.” also it was named to that time still Project R1, so yeah maybe there comes all the confusion. the linnk also contains that article: click , but i think the title is misleading

I was really excited to hear they are making it “only keyboard” as it would be completely different to play, but then they changed their mind and hopefully not because of the mass
