YS Saga : A good medicine to treat hype

Hi everyone !

For the ones that are hyped about ToS (who isn’t) and miss Ro I recommand the Ys series on steam :
The Bgm are very alike to those games
The dynamic gameplay could be close to ToS’
The graphics and sound effect are Roish
Story, mob bashing, a little grinding (just enough to prevent lassitude)
Hard old school difficulty :stuck_out_tongue:

Give it a try, it’s worth the shot and has some nostalgia feels in it !
Enjoy !

Ys : Origin
Ys : The oath in Felgana
Ys VI : The Ark of Napishtim
(The Ys chronicles are less similar but good though)

I’ve played all Ys games with all alternative story/gameplay versions and it’s a pretty good series. I recommend.

Same here. A very good series and interesting characters. My boy Adol put in work every time. :sunglasses:

Ys can be fun but it lacks a bit of variation in it’s combat. That’s why I prefer the Seiken Densetsu games because of the different classes and even Rune Factory 4 because of the different play styles (although they don’t have bows, that’s -3 points right there).

And about the difficulty, Sharan Maze in RF4 is such a BS that I even get depressed just from remembering it. The Ventuswill fight is like trying to beat 3 Airmans at once. And everyone knows that you can’t f*cking beat Airman.

Ah, i remember doing Ys VI The Ark of Naphistim back on the PS2, on all difficultys, including nightmare.

Never found the bonus boss though, i only knew about him because of the boss rush mode.

@Shiro I’m a big fan of Mana series too, more than that - I love it! The thing is, while Ys was made as a pure action game with a really blunt story the titles in Mana series are focusing more on the story itself (while still being action RPGs). If you compare SD3 (which I suppose you are talking about) with any 3D Ys, you have to admit that Ys has superior combat. Later Ys games have even different characters and really fun skills.

I was thinking more about Sword of Mana for gameboy. I remember you could use different weapons and the spirit system was pretty cool. I really value variation in combat so I prefer the “play in your way” kind of gameplay.

I played wanderer from YS Sega Genesis back in 90.

@Shiro Yeah, that’s a valid point. However, in Ys series there are some titles where you can switch between characters while also in combat. Each character has different weapon and skill set. The crucial thing is that Ys is made around challenging boss fights which are all well thought-out and you need to think of some kind of strategy every time. Bosses in Mana series aren’t that memorable nor difficult and overall combat system feels a little cheap compared to the full blown action game as Ys. Still, Mana series are excellent games and actually have a very special place in my heart because it’s the series that brought me to jrpgs a long time ago.

Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (AKA GB’s Sword of Mana AKA Final Fantasy Adventure) is definitively one of my favorite games from my childhood :sob:

I’m going to leave this link here… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSEiFpKo63k&index=5&list=PL9E4D0B33C71E9E5E

I only played a few hours of Oath in Felghana and Origins, and it was pretty much Adol slashing things so I might have missed something.

Oh yeah, about the difficulty, that’s why I mentioned Rune Factory 4, the end game dungeons on hard mode are hell on earth. Oh G-Golem how I hate you, and Ventuswill as well (not the human form, the human form is adorable).

Also saving the world as Adol is easy, what is really hard is to beat sacred dragons and still get back to town in time to make your girlfriend’s dinner. That’s some real challenge.

Well I’ll definately give them a shot then :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m actually playing Ys the oath in Felgana, and with origins it has some of the nasties bosses I ever saw, and I really love how the difficulty is made in these games, and how taking 5-10 minutes of grinding 2 levels totally changes how difficult the boss is x) My fingers got numb with all the tries I made u_u

I wonder if some ToS bosses will be as difficult as these ones, when you have to try 30 times the same boss but are eating 50 HP of his life each time until the last defeat

I know it’s an incredibly popular series, but I honestly just have never been able to get into Ys. I just could never understand the fun of the run & bump combat system.I also tried playing Ys Origin with new combat system but just wasn’t pulled in by it either.

The Mana series on the other hand, I’ll agree was very awesome.
