This is an amusing topic in my opinion.
First off, let’s all agree, people have or will be buying from gold sellers in this game. If they weren’t, then gold sellers would not be trying to spam their services (why advertise somewhere where you know nobody will buy?).
Okay now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, what is the mentality of someone who would buy gold?
Well really, you just need to ask yourself this…
Let’s say that you want to use some real money to buy silver. What’s the difference between buying tokens from imc to sell vs. buying silver straight up from some RMT outfit?
Not everyone feels loyal to imc, so if you were a player who didn’t care much about imc and wanted silver/power, would you go for expensive silver or cheap silver?
If you’re spending $18 to sell a token, you’re already limited to the weird market limit system which will place minimum and maximum caps on how much silver you’ll get. And because using money to obtain silver is already legitimized in this scheme, it’s not a huge jump in my opinion to just buying silver from a cheaper source.
I think people buy or will buy silver in this game, because the game systems and developers have already legitimized the idea. And once the idea is legitimized then it’s just a question of getting the most bang for your buck…
But that’s just my two cents.
EDIT: I am absolutely not saying this is okay and I condemn anyone who does this as it ruins the game economy (or whatever is left of it). I’m just saying that within the economic monetization system that imc has set up for this game, they have basically set up a weird double standard where real money = silver, but only if you buy from imc.
EDIT2: What about other mmos where there is not such a direct comparison between buying tokens and buying silver straight up? I would argue people buy gold in those situations to get past tedious or non-fun aspects of the game in order to get to the “good parts” where they can feel powerful or have an “awesome” character. What kinds of tedious parts? Maybe having to wait for long periods to grind monsters, maybe being unable to attain that item that they want. Etc… essentially when the level of frustration and desire outpace the amount of fun being had. I personally feel a lot of these underlying issues can be addressed with better gameplay. But of course there will also always be people who want the easy way to winning, or want to satisfy their virtual ego of having the ‘best’, so there’s that too.
