What is ToS's sprite art/graphics style?

So I was thinking of doing some fanart in a very similar fashion to how the characters look in-game (the sprites).

For some reason I’ve always thought that ToS was Pixel-arty in style but when I look close it doesn’t seem like it, looks more like hard cell shading or something. Or the images are big and the pixel style is just so small you can’t tell it is pixel art?

How are the sprites drawn lol??
Sorry if the questions are badly put : |

If memory serves the bodies of characters are 3D models, while the heads are made seperately. I recall there being a website where you can view the 3D models but I don’t remember it q_q

Click the class u need to the skill page, there will be GIFs of the class…
quite useful :kissing_smiling_eyes:

@Nyomi @Natz_Clo

Yeah I’m not gonna make them in 3D or animated, I want to draw the characters digitally in the most similar fashion possible!

But I have to figure out what approach to take since pixel art and all different styles have different approachs (: Like if it was Ragnarok chars I’d draw, I’d have to draw them in Pixel art style but ToS doesn’t look pixely like that, I’m trying to figure out if it’s just very fine pixel art or just something else entirely D:

I actually have been using this site when I’ve tried to determine what kind of graphics it is, haha!

Cel-shading? If anything this is the exact opposite of cel-shading

When I look close it looks like very fine cel shading but I can’t be sure since everything looks that way in certain resolutions.
Think I’ll have to ask a dev to know for sure, for now I’ll just soft cel shade.

There is not really such thing as a “soft” cel shade. Cel-shading is hard pretty much by definition. Soft shading is the exact opposite.

I see what you mean. It’s not 100% smooth; you can distinguish different levels of shading. But that is either simply a filter effect or the effect of the scale of the objects, like you said. This is not achieved by cel-shading. I know it has a name of its own, but I can’t remember it now…

Furthermore, I believe at least the heads are hand-drawn instead of computer-generated from a 3D model

Yes I know there isn’t anything called soft cel shafing, it was merely to call the soft shading something in this context.

I can see it’s hand drawn, that’s why I want to do fanart in the same fashion, I’m not sure how to do it properly though but my regular approach will have to do!

All of the beautiful art (including the characters, backgrounds, NPCs—everything) in Tree of Savior is hand-drawn by MAGGI and her art team’s blessed hands.

I believe its supposed to be a fairy tale type of style. :two_hearts:

Here is her personal website along with a blog attached to it:

I think in a way that wouldn’t be pixel art anymore.

As you can see here those “paper cut-outs” are attached to the 3d body model… and yes as it was mentioned the head is separate from the body and is 2d.

They look digitally painted to me.

I will research her and see if she has some kind of video or tutorial where she draws so I can mimic it  thanks!

@Ayalon yeah I can see that, this thread was mainly to investigate what kind of digital art. Seems like there’s no specific one though!
