Does anyone know? Also, if I use equipments that give aoe defense ratio, will it make dungeon bosses’s aoes hit only me and not the other players in the party?
as far as i know skills work the same for bosses.
you didn’t try to search, did you?
this EXACT question has been asked repeatedly before.
that said, something about reducing the number of targets that can be included in an AoE attack.
it doesn’t necessarily mean that the attack will only hit you (unless you were the specific target)… it could also mean that your AoE defense is too high to be included in the AoE attack.
you’'ll have to do a search for it still to get the exact mechanics.
well I actually searched for it and only found out how it worked for mobs, and no info about players AOE def ratio even in tos mechanics pdf
everything works the same for players as it does for mobs.
I don’t think that’s entirely true.
Mobs attacks seem to completely ignore the AoE attack/defense mechanics.
This is very easy to see when playing Bokor. When a mob uses a normal attack on zombies, it will hit as many zombies as it can inside the attack AoE area. So using zombies as “meat shields” doesn’t work at all (not in PvM at least).
I haven’t tested this second hypothesis but I believe if you have 5 players on top of eachother, any normal monster attack will also hit all the 5 players regardless of their AoE Defense.
Oh now I can see that my question was misleading, I was actually asking what is the player AOE defense ratio number, like one or two, but I finished a set that gives me +3 aoe def ratio and does not seem to make any difference in pve.
Every player starts with a default number of 1. You can see it in your character stats sheet (press F1).
You can increase it further with equipment.
AoE Defense works better for PvP. For PvM I don’t even think it works at all…
AoE Attack on the other hand, is very valuable in PvM and still good at PvP.
It’s a pretty simple mechanic: Your AoE Attack minus each mob AoE defense determines how many mobs you can hit.
Example: You have 8 AoE attack, each mob has 2 AoE defense. Thus you can hit 8 - 2 = 6 (One); 6 - 2 = 4 (Two); 4 - 2 = 2 (Three); 2 - 2 = 0 (Four); So you can hit four mobs in total.
If all mobs have the same AoE defense it’s the same as dividing your AoE attack by their AoE defense (which results how many mobs you can hit inside your AoE). If they don’t have the same AoE defense values just subtract them individually.
and prioritizes the ones with the highest AoE defense 1st.
I can confirm they dont. At the very least if you are stacking aoe defense ratio you will get hit by aoe’s a lot more often then anyone else.
Companions shouldnt just be considered as player or monsters when testing interactions…
Yo momma so fat she has AOE def ratio of 10
oh snap brotha!
she heard that and she comin’ to sit on ya now! betta run uphill!
Just for putting the info here, 4 aoe ratio does not seem to make any difference in PVE but one, that is to make bosses target you like no tomorrow…
I am a full tanker and sometimes when I’m not wearing the aoe def set i’ll lose the boss taunt, but when I’m using it for some reason he will keep aiming me for a long time.
Would like if someone could confirm this too.
it’s because you “occupy” more AoE space, because of your high AoE defense, and high-AoE-def characters are targeted first.
it works the same way for mobs that have high AoE defense as well. our attacks hit the targets with more AoE def first.
think of it kind of like… the amount of space the defender takes up (AoE def) vs the amount of range the attacker can swing through (AoE attack).
start with the AoE attack rate…
-start-
–find the monster with the largest AoE defense in range, that has not been hit yet on this swing (system obviously has ways of selecting in case of a tie).
–that monster takes a hit.
–subtract that AoE defense rate from the (remaining) AoE attack rate.
–if the remaining AoE attack rate is still more than zero, go back to -start-
eg, you’re a highlander using Cartar Stroke, which has an AoE rate of 5. you have no bonuses. your targets are all medium (base AoE def of 2) with no bonuses.
you take a swing, the first mob is hit and uses 2 of your AoE rate, leaving 3. the second mob is hit and uses 2 more, leaving 1. the 3rd mob is hit, using 2 more. we’re no longer above zero, so you hit no more targets with this swing.
as for calculating exact AoE atk/def rates, i have no idea.
small/medium/large/etc gives a base of 1/2/3/etc AoE defense. Various items list AoE atk/def bonuses.
it seems monter has infinity AOE Atk ratios
