What do you guys think about metas?

So like, most games have metas and my personal subjective opinion is that they kinda make the game less fun. Since there is less choice and you only have 1 “best” gear.

Very few games have non-meta ability and when I say this, I mean like on RO there was no “meta” system, at least on certain private servers. You always had something that could counter your gear…it was more of a counter system. Here take this example:

Earth Water Fire Lightening Ice

Ideally none of the above elements are “best” as they all have counters. Kinda like “Rock, paper and scissors”. Neither are the best and cannot be made meta

So I kinda wish for such a thing in ToS, so that the game is balanced - since no gear is the “best” and can be countered.

What do you guys think? let me know.

Too lazy to give my own specified view, this will more or less cover it.

That video was so flawed I don’t know where to begin :stuck_out_tongue:
But thanks for the post. I’ll sum up my view in short.

  1. In GW2 there is a meta and you play that for a few months till the next meta. But during that period, there is only “1” playstyle.
  2. In chess(from the video), you can actually use more than 1 strategy albeit there are only a few “limited” strategies, they are more than 1 and you can see multiple play styles at the same time.

I don’t like it had some problems with it in GW2. It made the game less fun for me had to follow a meta in GW2 or else they would kick me in dungeons.

Just to clarify, “meta” doesn’t refer to whatever the “best gear” or “best strategy” is. It refers to the thought process used outside the game to counter specific strategies that are being highly used within the game.

But regarding what you mentioned, I don’t think there’s going to be any of that in ToS considering all types of armor has a weakness. So there never will be “best gear” just “best gear for that situation” but will still end up being counter-able as long as your opponent has different types of attacks.

About the whole “meta” thing, and kicking people from parties just because they don’t like your class.

Remember that the only ones who impose meta are players. Just don’t be that guy who kicks, i.e. a dps class, just because you wanted another dps class.

No rules tells us how to play the game, play what you want, how you want. Of course they’ll always be an “optimal” build, but you’re playing to have fun, not to please people

Seems like the idea of this video would only pertain to PvP oriented games. Here is to hoping WoE finds itself in ToS!!!

Does ToS have guilds yet? because that would be the first step to WoE

I think people should learn what meta means. It’s at the point where any time you see someone say “meta” you might as well just stop reading.

I judge by practice and not by theory. In Guild Wars 2 - “full berserk gear is the new meta”. That means playing as full berserk is what is the best and expected gear.

I do even more damage without berserk gear. Also most people use a exploit called line casting.

Some ppl are trying to do this creating “perfect builds”. Its the laziness factor… if you give a shortcut of curse they will take it.

“meta”, “flavor of the month”, “viable”, and “optimal” are all the same to me, they are terms that will appear in every game eventually when the people with the most free time do all the math behind every single skill and build to find out which ones have the most advantages and least disadvantages. The problem comes in when players assume that the “meta” classes and builds are the ONLY ones worth playing, or even worse, when the game is so unbalanced that you HAVE to play the current “meta” classes and builds to compete with other players or even be invited to guilds/parties. Hopefully it will be like the OP said and we will have a rock paper scissors effect in the game where certain classes/skills counter each other and no class can do everything more optimally than any other class.

Meta is something that I never took seriously. I’d rather just have fun and enjoy myself (
